We achieve reflection-type bound states in the continuum (BICs) in the compound grating waveguide structure by tuning the excitation of the guided modes. Assisted by the quasi-BICs with ultrahigh Q factors, the Goos-Hänchen (GH) shift can be greatly enhanced to larger than or equal to four orders of wavelength. In addition, different from the large GH shift based on the Brewster dip or transmission-type resonance, the maximum GH shift assisted by the reflection-type quasi-BIC is located at the reflectance peak with unity reflectance, which can be more easily detected in the experiment. Based on the quasi-BIC-assisted giant GH shift, we propose an ultrasensitive temperature sensor with a minimum resolution in the order of 10−4 °C. Our work provides a route, under the current experimental conditions, to design ultrasensitive sensors, light information storage devices, wavelength division de/multiplexers, optical switches, and polarization beam splitters based on this giant GH shift together with high reflectance.

Tailoring optical nonlinear effects (e.g., harmonic generation, sum-frequency mixing, etc.) in the recently emerging all-dielectric platform is important for both fundamental science and industrial development of high-efficiency, ultrafast, and miniaturized photonic devices. In this paper, we propose a method for the dynamically switchable high-harmonic generation in silicon nanodimer metasurfaces by exploiting the polarization-controlled dual bound states in the continuum (BIC). Owing to the high-quality factor of BIC resonances, efficient harmonic signals including the third-harmonic generation and fifth-harmonic generation from a direct process as well as a cascaded process by degenerate four-wave mixing are obtained. Moreover, the BIC and their resonantly enhanced harmonics can be switched on or off with high selectivity with respect to the fundamental pump polarization. Compared with previous reports, our paper provides a simple but effective tuning strategy by fully exploring the structural symmetry and polarization degree of freedom rather than resorting to additional external stimuli, which would possess great advantages in designing tunable and switchable nonlinear light sources for chip-scale applications.

In conventional all-dielectric one-dimensional photonic crystals (1DPCs), photonic gaps will shift toward short wavelengths (blueshift) as the incident angle increases for both transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) polarizations. We theoretically and experimentally achieve redshift gaps in 1DPCs composed of alternative hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) and dielectrics for TM polarization based on the anomalous wavevector dispersion of HMMs. The HMM is mimicked by layered titanium dioxide and silver with a subwavelength unit cell. However, the gaps remain to be blue-shifted for TE polarization. Therefore, the edges of such gaps can be utilized for high-efficiency wide-angle polarization selection. We achieve efficient polarization selection for incident angles ranging from 50° to 80° at the wavelength of 365 nm.

Without using intrinsic chiral metamaterials with complex structures, here we use achiral metasurfaces to realize giant extrinsic chirality empowered by quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs). The giant extrinsic chirality in the proposed achiral metasurface is mainly attributed to the breaking of the mirror symmetry of the whole system, combining the metasurface with incident waves. The transmittance of two different polarization states and the signs of circular dichroism (CD) can be arbitrarily controlled by tilting the plane of the metasurface relative to the incoming waves. Remarkably, we simultaneously select two polarization states at different bands for a certain achiral metasurface based on the symmetry-protected dual bound states in the continuum (BICs). The measured maximum CDs approach ±0.85. In addition, an application of the polarization-multiplexed-field image display assisted by chiral quasi-BICs is demonstrated. This work provides a general method to control extrinsic chirality in achiral metasurfaces and offers possibilities to design high-performance multiband spin-selective transmission, biodetection, chemical analysis, and on-chip chiral manipulation.

Recently, broadband optical Tamm states (OTSs) in heterostructures composed of highly lossy metal layers and all-dielectric one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystals (PhCs) have been utilized to realize broadband absorption. However, as the incident angle increases, the broadband OTSs in such heterostructures shift towards shorter wavelengths along the PBGs in all-dielectric 1D PhCs, which strongly limits the bandwidths of wide-angle absorption. In this paper, we realize a broadband omnidirectional OTS in a heterostructure composed of a Cr layer and a 1D PhC containing layered hyperbolic metamaterials with an angle-insensitive photonic band gap. Assisted by the broadband omnidirectional OTS, broadband wide-angle absorption can be achieved. High absorptance (A > 0.85) can be remained when the wavelength ranges from 1612 nm to 2335 nm and the incident angle ranges from 0° to 70°. The bandwidth of wide-angle absorption (0°-70°) reaches 723 nm. The designed absorber is a lithography-free 1D structure, which can be easily fabricated under the current magnetron sputtering or electron-beam vacuum deposition technique. This broadband, wide-angle, and lithography-free absorber would possess potential applications in the design of photodetectors, solar thermophotovoltaic devices, gas analyzers, and cloaking devices.

Based on the selective excitations of the forward and backward propagating resonant guided modes, we achieve dual bound states in the continuum (dual BICs) in a compound grating waveguide structure composed of a four-part periodic grating layer and a waveguide layer. Assisted by the quasi-BIC corresponding to forward propagating resonant guided mode (quasi-BIC 1) and the one corresponding to backward propagating resonant guided mode (quasi-BIC 2), large positive and negative GH shifts can be simultaneously realized. Also, in contrast to the GH shift enhanced by conventional transmission-type resonance, large positive and negative GH shifts assisted by dual quasi-BICs possess 100% reflectance, which can be more easily detected and utilized. Our work provides a route to design GH-shift-based high-performance sensors, wavelength division (de)multiplexers and light storage devices.
