Symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum (BICs) are nonradiative states with infinite lifetime and perfect confinement of energy even though lying in the radiation continuum due to the symmetry incompatibility. Herein, we study the symmetry-protected BIC supported by metasurfaces composed of silicon nanodisks. Through adding or removing parts of the nanodisks from the edge, a sharp Fano resonance emerges and demonstrates the excitation of quasi-BIC. Their Q factors exhibit the same dependence on the asymmetry degree with these two opposite operations. Furthermore, from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives, analysis on far-field contributions from multipole moments along different directions combining with near-field distributions explains the evolution from BIC to quasi-BIC. The dominant contributor to the quasi-BIC is illustrated to be the electric quadrupole in the x−y plane. Finally, the topological charge carried by the BIC is calculated to be −1, demonstrating the topological characteristics of our design. Such metasurfaces are robust in nanofabrication. Our results may provide a route for resonators with better performance applied in sensing, switching, nonlinear optics, and so on.

Metamaterials, as artificially structured materials composed of subwavelength arrays of resonant unit cells, can exhibit exotic properties beyond those accessible to natural materials. They were initially proposed for challenging fundamental laws and demonstrating negative refraction in the microwave regime, and subsequently exploited as a versatile platform to manipulate electromagnetic waves throughout the spectrum via their extreme scalability. Over the past decade, research into metamaterials has been extended to a search for real-world applications, leading to the concept of metadevices, defined as metamaterial-based devices that can operate in an active manner. Due to their subwavelength scale, metamaterials present intriguing strategies for active tuning and provide flat, high-efficiency alternatives to conventional optical systems based on bulky components. In this topical review, we summarize the development of active metamaterials and metadevices ranging from microwave to visible wavelengths, including milestones as well as the state of the art. We survey tuning strategies based on mechanical reconfiguration and incorporation with active materials such as varactor diodes, semiconductors, liquid crystals, phase change materials, superconductors, and two-dimensional materials under various external stimuli, and discuss their fascinating advantages and potential challenges to be confronted. Finally, future prospects together with several emerging tuning strategies and materials are presented at the end.

Enhancing the light-matter interaction in two-dimensional (2D) materials with high Q resonances in photonic structures has boosted the development of optical and photonic devices. Herein we intend to build a bridge between the radiation engineering and the bound states in the continuum (BIC), and present a general method to control light absorption at critical coupling through the quasi-BIC resonance. In a single-mode, two-port system composed of graphene, coupled with silicon nanodisk metasurfaces, the maximum absorption of 0.5 can be achieved when the radiation rate of the magnetic dipole resonance equals to the dissipate loss rate of graphene. Furthermore, the absorption bandwidth can be adjusted more than two orders of magnitude, from 0.9 nm to 94 nm, by simultaneously changing the asymmetric parameter of metasurfaces, the Fermi level, and the layer number of graphene. This work reveals the essential role of BIC in radiation engineering and provides promising strategies in controlling light absorption of 2D materials for the next-generation optical and photonic devices, e.g., light emitters, detectors, modulators, and sensors.

Tailoring optical nonlinear effects (e.g., harmonic generation, sum-frequency mixing, etc.) in the recently emerging all-dielectric platform is important for both fundamental science and industrial development of high-efficiency, ultrafast, and miniaturized photonic devices. In this paper, we propose a method for the dynamically switchable high-harmonic generation in silicon nanodimer metasurfaces by exploiting the polarization-controlled dual bound states in the continuum (BIC). Owing to the high-quality factor of BIC resonances, efficient harmonic signals including the third-harmonic generation and fifth-harmonic generation from a direct process as well as a cascaded process by degenerate four-wave mixing are obtained. Moreover, the BIC and their resonantly enhanced harmonics can be switched on or off with high selectivity with respect to the fundamental pump polarization. Compared with previous reports, our paper provides a simple but effective tuning strategy by fully exploring the structural symmetry and polarization degree of freedom rather than resorting to additional external stimuli, which would possess great advantages in designing tunable and switchable nonlinear light sources for chip-scale applications.

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) has been intensively studied and widely employed for light trapping and absorption enhancement. In the mid-infrared and terahertz (THz) regime, graphene supports tunable SPR via manipulating its Fermi energy and enhances light–matter interaction at the selected wavelength. Most previous studies have concentrated on the absorption enhancement in graphene itself while little attention has been paid to trapping light and enhancing the light absorption in other light-absorbing materials with graphene SPR. In this work, periodic arrays of graphene rings are proposed to introduce tunable light trapping with good angle polarization tolerance and enhance the absorption in the surrounding light-absorbing materials by more than one order of magnitude. Moreover, the design principle here could be set as a template to achieve multi-band plasmonic absorption enhancement by introducing more graphene concentric rings into each unit cell. This work not only opens up new ways of employing graphene SPR, but also leads to practical applications in high-performance simultaneous multi-color photodetection with high efficiency and tunable spectral selectivity.
