Gastrointestinal tract (GIT) infections such as ulcers, bleeding, polyps, Crohn’s disease and cancer are quite familiar today worldwide. Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) is an efficient means of investigation of GIT diseases. However, still several challenges exist in this domain, such as lesion shape, colour, texture, size and irregularity. To deal with these problems, several computer-based methods are introduced in computer vision domain but they used only hand-crafted features which produced wrong predictions several times. In this research, a new technique is applied based on the fusion of deep convolutional (CNN) and geometric features. Initially, disease regions are extracted from given WCE images using a new approach named contrast-enhanced colour features . Geometric features are extracted from segmented disease region. Thereafter, unique VGG16 and VGG19 deep CNN features fusion are performed based on Euclidean Fisher Vector . The unique features are fused with geometric features which are later fed to conditional entropy approach for best features selection. The selected features are finally classified by K-Nearest Neighbour . A privately collected database which consists of 5500 WCE images is utilised for the evaluation of the proposed method and achieved best classification accuracy of 99.42% and precision rate of 99.51%. The classification accuracy proves the authenticity of the proposed approach.

With an overwhelming increase in the demand of autonomous systems, especially in the applications related to intelligent robotics and visual surveillance, come stringent accuracy requirements for complex object recognition. A system that maintains its performance against a change in the object’s nature is said to be sustainable and it has become a major area of research for the computer vision research community in the past few years. In this work, we present a sustainable deep learning architecture, which utilizes multi-layer deep features fusion and selection, for accurate object classification. The proposed approach comprises three steps: (1) By utilizing two deep learning architectures, Very Deep Convolutional Networks for Large-Scale Image Recognition and Inception V3, it extracts features based on transfer learning, (2) Fusion of all the extracted feature vectors is performed by means of a parallel maximum covariance approach, and (3) The best features are selected using Multi Logistic Regression controlled Entropy-Variances method. For verification of the robust selected features, the Ensemble Learning method named Subspace Discriminant Analysis is utilized as a fitness function. The experimental process is conducted using four publicly available datasets, including Caltech-101, Birds database, Butterflies database and CIFAR-100, and a ten-fold validation process which yields the best accuracies of 95.5%, 100%, 98%, and 68.80% for the datasets respectively. Based on the detailed statistical analysis and comparison with the existing methods, the proposed selection method gives significantly more accuracy. Moreover, the computational time of the proposed selection method is better for real-time implementation.

Dementia directly influences the quality of life of a person suffering from this chronic illness. The caregivers or carers of dementia people provide critical support to them but are subject to negative health outcomes because of burden and stress. The intervention of mobile health (mHealth) has become a fast-growing assistive technology (AT) in therapeutic treatment of individuals with chronic illness. The purpose of this comprehensive study is to identify, appraise, and synthesize the existing evidence on the use of mHealth applications (apps) as a healthcare resource for people with dementia and their caregivers. A review of both peer-reviewed and full-text literature was undertaken across five (05) electronic databases for checking the articles published during the last five years (between 2014 and 2018). Out of 6195 searches yielded articles, 17 were quantified according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. The included studies distinguish between five categories, viz., (1) cognitive training and daily living, (2) screening, (3) health and safety monitoring, (4) leisure and socialization, and (5) navigation. Furthermore, two most popular commercial app stores, i.e., Google Play Store and Apple App Store, were searched for finding mHealth based dementia apps for PwD and their caregivers. Initial search generated 356 apps with thirty-five (35) meeting the defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. After shortlisting of mobile applications, it is observed that these existing apps generally addressed different dementia specific aspects overlying with the identified categories in research articles. The comprehensive study concluded that mobile health apps appear as feasible AT intervention for PwD and their carers irrespective of limited available research, but these apps have potential to provide different resources and strategies to help this community.

Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer deaths around the globe. Early detection is crucial for successful treatment and increasing patient survival rates. Artificial intelligence techniques can play a significant role in the initial diagnosis of lung cancer. Various methods consisted of machine learning and deep learning methods are used to detect lung cancer. This research works aims to develop automated methods to accurately identify and classify lung cancer in CT scans by using computational intelligence techniques. The process typically involves lobe segmentation, extracting candidate nodules, and classifying nodules as either cancer or non-cancer. The proposed lung cancer classification uses modified U-Net based lobe segmentation and nodule detection model consisting of three phases. The first phase segments lobe using CT slice and predicted mask using modified U-Net architecture and the second phase extracts candidate nodule using predicted mask and label employing modified U-Net architecture. Finally, the third phase is based on modified AlexNet, and a support vector machine is applied to classify candidate nodules as cancer and non-cancer. The experimental outcomes of the proposed methodology for lobe segmentation, candidate nodule extraction, and classification of lung cancer have shown promising results on the publicly available LUAN16 dataset. The modified AlexNet-SVM classification model achieves 97.98% of accuracy, 98.84% of sensitivity, 97.47% of specificity, 97.53% of precision, and 97.70% of F1 for the classification of lung cancer.

With the recent evolution of technology, the number of image archives has increased exponentially. In Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR), high-level visual information is represented in the form of low-level features. The semantic gap between the low-level features and the high-level image concepts is an open research problem. In this paper, we present a novel visual words integration of Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) and Speeded-Up Robust Features (SURF). The two local features representations are selected for image retrieval because SIFT is more robust to the change in scale and rotation, while SURF is robust to changes in illumination. The visual words integration of SIFT and SURF adds the robustness of both features to image retrieval. The qualitative and quantitative comparisons conducted on Corel-1000, Corel-1500, Corel-2000, Oliva and Torralba and Ground Truth image benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed visual words integration.
