A detailed design of a new rotational single sheet tester device which allows comprehensive multiaxial magneto-mechanical analysis of ferromagnetic sheets is proposed. The challenges that arose during the mechanical and magnetic design phases are addressed. The applicability of the device is tested by performing magneto-mechanical measurements on an M400-50A electrical steel sheet. Results under several multiaxial magneto-mechanical loadings with circular and alternating magnetic flux densities are reported. It is shown that the effect of multiaxial stress on iron losses can be much more significant than that of uniaxial stress.

This paper introduces an interpolation method based on snapshot approach to reduce the order of a nonlinear model for magnetostatic problems and facilitate the evaluation of the corresponding system of equations. The solution of the reduced model for a set of given inputs is built by interpolating the right singular vectors, obtained from singular value decomposition of snapshots. To validate the efficiency of this method, this reduced model is compared with full-order finite-element model. Furthermore, the proposed method is analyzed with respect to a more conventional model order reduction that is combined with the discrete empirical interpolation method. The orthogonal interpolation method is the most effective method to reduce model of an interior permanent magnet synchronous machine especially in term of computational time.

In the control of electric drives, inaccurate estimation of the motor parameters affects the robustness of the control. This effect is observed particularly when the linear lumped parameter-based models are employed to represent a machine composed of nonlinear magnetic materials. Finite element (FE) models consider the material nonlinearity accurately. However, implementing these models in a real-time system is challenging due to the computational burden. In this paper, we propose a fast-dynamic model, based on a model order reduction method, to control a permanent magnet synchronous machine in a wide range of speed. The stator currents in the rotor frame of reference are given as inputs to a reduced FE model, which computes the nodal values of the magnetic vector potential and thereafter the flux linkages. A discrete-time model is used to control the rotor speed and the stator current components. Experiments on a 2.2 kW interior permanent magnet synchronous machine verify the viability of the proposed model.

This paper presents an anisotropic and mechanical strain-dependent model of magnetostriction in electrical steel sheets and its application in finite-element computations. The presented model is bidirectional and the data needed for its derivation is extracted solely from unidirectional measurements under mechanical loading. The model has six parameters that describe the magnetic and strain behavior and two parameters that describe the anisotropy. The validation of the model is carried out through measurements and computations on a single-phase transformer-like device. The comparison between computation and measurement results seems to be reasonable regardless of the fact that the magnetic behavior is modeled as single valued, isotropic, and anhysteretic. Original magnetostriction measurements are also presented and the importance of magnetostriction anisotropy in a priori isotropic electrical steel sheets is demonstrated. The model is easy to implement in existing codes and the anisotropic behavior is straightforward to modify according to a specific material.

Cutting the electrical steel sheets to form the shape of the stator and the rotor affects the magnetic properties of the sheets. The increase of the magnetic losses as well as the drop of the magnetic permeability can impact on the design of electrical devices. This paper investigates this deterioration effect on the optimal design of the stator of a high-speed permanent magnet synchronous motor. The deterioration due to punching is phenomenologically analyzed based on measurement of strips of steel sheets with various widths on an enlarged Epstein frame. The losses are computed with a Bertotti model whose coefficients depend on the width of the sheets. The optimization of a synchronous machine is then carried out with this magnetic losses model.

In this paper, the anhysteretic Sablik model is identified from measurements and implemented in a finite element code. The model takes into account the effect of the plastic deformation through the dislocation density and thus enables to account for the degradation of the magnetic properties. A new model for magnetostriction is proposed and implemented in the Sablik model. Experimental data are used to identify the parameters of both the Sablik model and the proposed magnetostriction. Furthermore, the mechanical punching process of an electrical steel sheet is simulated in view of evaluating the plastic strain distribution near the punched edge. Based on the Sablik model and the simulated plastic strain, finite element simulations are carried out on a steel sheet and a cage induction machine. The effect of punching process on the distribution of magnetic flux density and the magnetization current are analyzed.
