The upcoming 5th Generation (5G) of wireless networks is expected to lay a foundation of intelligent networks with the provision of some isolated Artificial Intelligence (AI) operations. However, fully-intelligent network orchestration and management for providing innovative services will only be realized in Beyond 5G (B5G) networks. To this end, we envisage that the 6th Generation (6G) of wireless networks will be driven by on-demand self-reconfiguration to ensure a many-fold increase in the network performance and service types. The increasingly stringent performance requirements of emerging networks may finally trigger the deployment of some interesting new technologies such as large intelligent surfaces, electromagnetic-orbital angular momentum, visible light communications and cell-free communications – to name a few. Our vision for 6G is – a massively connected complex network capable of rapidly responding to the users’ service calls through real-time learning of the network state as described by the network-edge (e.g., base-station locations, cache contents, etc.), air interface (e.g., radio spectrum, propagation channel, etc.), and the user-side (e.g., battery-life, locations, etc.). The multi-state, multi-dimensional nature of the network state, requiring real-time knowledge, can be viewed as a quantum uncertainty problem. In this regard, the emerging paradigms of Machine Learning (ML), Quantum Computing (QC), and Quantum ML (QML) and their synergies with communication networks can be considered as core 6G enablers. Considering these potentials, starting with the 5G target services and enabling technologies, we provide a comprehensive review of the related state-of-the-art in the domains of ML (including deep learning), QC and QML, and identify their potential benefits, issues and use cases for their applications in the B5G networks. Subsequently, we propose a novel QC-assisted and QML-based framework for 6G communication networks while articulating its challenges and potential enabling technologies at the network-infrastructure, network-edge, air interface and user-end. Finally, some promising future research directions for the quantum-and QML-assisted B5G networks are identified and discussed.

With the commencement of the 5 th generation (5G) of wireless networks, researchers around the globe have started paying their attention to the imminent challenges that may emerge in the beyond 5G (B5G) era. Various revolutionary technologies and innovative services are offered in 5G networks, which, along with many principal advantages, are anticipated to bring a boom in the number of connected wireless devices and the types of use-cases that may cause the scarcity of network resources. These challenges partly emerged with the advent of massive machine-type communications (mMTC) services, require extensive research innovations to sustain the evolution towards enhanced-mMTC (e-mMTC) with the scalable network cost in 6 th generation (6G) wireless networks. Towards delivering the anticipated massive connectivity requirements with optimal energy and spectral efficiency besides low hardware cost, this paper presents an enabling framework for 6G networks, which utilizes two emerging technologies, namely, non-coherent communications and backscatter communications (BsC). Recognizing the coherence between these technologies for their joint potential of delivering e-mMTC services in the B5G era, a comprehensive review of their state-of-the-art is conducted. The joint scope of non-coherent and BsC with other emerging 6G technologies is also identified, where the reviewed technologies include unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)-assisted communications, visible light communications (VLC), quantum-assisted communications, reconfigurable large intelligent surfaces (RLIS), non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), and machine learning (ML)-aided intelligent networks. Subsequently, the scope of these enabling technologies for different device types (e.g., UAVs, body implants, etc), service types (e.g., e-mMTC), and optimization parameters (e.g., spectrum, energy, cost) is analyzed. Finally, in the context of the proposed non-coherent and BsCs based framework for e-mMTCs, some promising future research directions and open research challenges are highlighted.

Devising automated procedures for accurate vessel segmentation (retinal) is crucial for timely prognosis of vision-threatening eye diseases. In this paper, a novel supervised deep learning-based approach is proposed which extends a variant of the fully convolutional neural network. The existing fully convolutional neural network-based counterparts have associated critical drawbacks of involving a large number of tunable hyper-parameters and an increased end-to-end training time furnished by their decoder structure. The proposed approach addresses these intricate challenges by using a skip-connections strategy by sharing indices obtained through max-pooling to the decoder from the encoder stage (respective stages) for enhancing the resolution of the feature map. This significantly reduces the number of required tunable hyper-parameters and the computational overhead of the training as well as testing stages. Furthermore, the proposed approach particularly helps in eradicating the requirement for employing both post-processing and pre-processing steps. In the proposed approach, the retinal vessel segmentation problem is formulated as a semantic pixel-wise segmentation task which helps in spanning the gap between semantic segmentation and medical image segmentation. A prime contribution of the proposed approach is the introduction of external skip-connection for passing the preserved low-level semantic edge information in order to reliably detect tiny vessels in the retinal fundus images. The performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed based on the three publicly available notable fundus image datasets, while the widely recognized evaluation metrics of specificity, sensitivity, accuracy, and the Receiver Operating Characteristics curves are used. Based on the assessment of the images in {DRIVE, CHASE_DB1, and STARE}; datasets, the proposed approach achieves a sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and ROC performance of {0.8252, 0.8440, and 0.8397};, {0.9787, 0.9810, and 0.9792};, {0.9649, 0.9722, and 0.9659};, and {0.9780, 0.9830, and 0.9810};, respectively. The reduced computational complexity and memory overhead along with improved segmentation performance advocates employing the proposed approach in the automated diagnostic systems for eye diseases.

The capacity and coverage requirements for 5 th generation (5G) and beyond wireless connectivity will be significantly different from the predecessor networks. To meet these requirements, the anticipated deployment cost in the United Kingdom (UK) is predicted to be between £30bn and £50bn, whereas the current annual capital expenditure (CapEX) of the mobile network operators (MNOs) is £2.5bn. This prospect has vastly impacted and has become one of the major delaying factors for building the 5G physical infrastructure, whereas other areas of 5G are progressing at their speed. Due to the expensive and complicated nature of the network infrastructure and spectrum, the second-tier operators, widely known as mobile virtual network operators (MVNO), are entirely dependent on the MNOs. In this paper, an extensive study is conducted to explore the possibilities of reducing the 5G deployment cost and developing viable business models. In this regard, the potential of infrastructure, data, and spectrum sharing is thoroughly investigated. It is established that the use of existing public infrastructure (e.g., streetlights, telephone poles, etc.) has a potential to reduce the anticipated cost by about 40% to 60%. This paper also reviews the recent Ofcom initiatives to release location-based licenses of the 5G-compatible radio spectrum. Our study suggests that simplification of infrastructure and spectrum will encourage the exponential growth of scenario-specific cellular networks (e.g., private networks, community networks, micro-operators) and will potentially disrupt the current business models of telecommunication business stakeholders - specifically MNOs and TowerCos. Furthermore, the anticipated dense device connectivity in 5G will increase the resolution of traditional and non-traditional data availability significantly. This will encourage extensive data harvesting as a business opportunity and function within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as large social networks. Consequently, the rise of new infrastructures and spectrum stakeholders is anticipated. This will fuel the development of a 5G data exchange ecosystem where data transactions are deemed to be high-value business commodities. The privacy and security of such data, as well as definitions of the associated revenue models and ownership, are challenging areas - and these have yet to emerge and mature fully. In this direction, this paper proposes the development of a unified data hub with layered structured privacy and security along with blockchain and encrypted off-chain based ownership/royalty tracking. Also, a data economy-oriented business model is proposed. The study found that with the potential commodification of data and data transactions along with the low-cost physical infrastructure and spectrum, the 5G network will introduce significant disruption in the Telco business ecosystem.

Vessel segmentation has come a long way in terms of matching the experts at detection accuracy, yet there is potential for further improvement. In this regard, the accurate detection of vessels is generally more challenging due to the high variations in vessel contrast, width, and the observed noise level. Most vessel segmentation strategies utilize contrast enhancement as a preprocessing step, which has an inherent tendency to aggravate the noise and therefore, impede accurate vessel detection. To alleviate this problem, we propose to use the state-of-the-art Probabilistic Patch-Based (PPB) denoiser within the framework of an unsupervised retinal vessel segmentation strategy based on the Frangi filter. The PPB denoiser helps preserve vascular structure while effectively dealing with the amplified noise. Also, the modified Frangi filter is evaluated separately for tiny and large vessels, followed by individual segmentation and linear recombination of the binarized outputs. This way, the performance of the modified Frangi filter is significantly enhanced. The performance evaluation of the proposed method is evaluated on two recognized open-access datasets, viz: DRIVE and STARE. The proposed strategy yields competitive results for both preprocessing modalities, i.e., Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) and Generalized Linear Model (GLM). The performance observed for CLAHE over DRIVE and STARE datasets is (Sn = 0.8027, Acc = 0.9561) and (Sn = 0.798, Acc = 0.9561), respectively. For GLM, it is observed to be (Sn = 0.7907, Acc = 0.9603) and (Sn = 0.7860, Acc = 0.9583) over DRIVE and STARE datasets, respectively. Furthermore, based on the conducted comparative study, it is established that the proposed method outperforms various notable vessel segmentation methods available in the existing literature.

The assessment of transformations in the retinal vascular structure has a strong potential in indicating a wide range of underlying ocular pathologies. Correctly identifying the retinal vessel map is a crucial step in disease identification, severity progression assessment, and appropriate treatment. Marking the vessels manually by a human expert is a tedious and time-consuming task, thereby reinforcing the need for automated algorithms capable of quick segmentation of retinal features and any possible anomalies. Techniques based on unsupervised learning methods utilize vessel morphology to classify vessel pixels. This study proposes a directional multi-scale line detector technique for the segmentation of retinal vessels with the prime focus on the tiny vessels that are most difficult to segment out. Constructing a directional line-detector, and using it on images having only the features oriented along the detector’s direction, significantly improves the detection accuracy of the algorithm. The finishing step involves a binarization operation, which is again directional in nature, helps in achieving further performance improvements in terms of key performance indicators. The proposed method is observed to obtain a sensitivity of 0.8043, 0.8011, and 0.7974 for the Digital Retinal Images for Vessel Extraction (DRIVE), STructured Analysis of the Retina (STARE), and Child Heart And health Study in England (CHASE_DB1) datasets, respectively. These results, along with other performance enhancements demonstrated by the conducted experimental evaluation, establish the validity and applicability of directional multi-scale line detectors as a competitive framework for retinal image segmentation.
