This review examines the methods used to optimize the process parameters of laser cladding, including traditional optimization algorithms such as single-factor, regression analysis, response surface, and Taguchi, as well as intelligent system optimization algorithms such as neural network models, genetic algorithms, support vector machines, the new non-dominance ranking genetic algorithm II, and particle swarm algorithms. The advantages and disadvantages of various laser cladding process optimization methods are analyzed and summarized. Finally, the development trend of optimization methods in the field of laser cladding is summarized and predicted. It is believed that the result would serve as a foundation for future studies on the preparation of high-quality laser cladding coatings.

Stainless steel powders with different molybdenum (Mo) contents were deposited on the substrate surface of 45 steel using a 6 kW fiber laser. The microstructure, phase, microhardness, wear properties, and corrosion resistance of coatings with different Mo contents were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), microhardness tester, wear tester, and electrochemical techniques. The results show that good metallurgical bonding was achieved between the stainless steel coating and the substrate. The amount of M7(C, B)3 type borocarbide decreases and that of M2B and M23(C, B)6 type borocarbides increases with the increase of Mo content in the coatings. The amount of martensite decreases, while the amount of ferrite gradually increases with the increase of Mo content. When the Mo content is 4.0 wt. %, Mo2C phase appears in the coating. The microstructure of the coating containing Mo is finer than that of the Mo-free coating. The microhardness decreases and the wear resistance of the coating gradually improves with the increase of Mo content. The wear resistance of the 6.0 wt. % Mo coating is about 3.7 times that of the Mo-free coating. With the increase of Mo content, the corrosion resistance of the coating firstly increases and then decreases. When the Mo content is 2.0 wt. %, the coating has the best corrosion resistance.

In this study, WC reinforced Ni-based composite coatings with Y2O3 addition were deposited on Ti-6Al-4V titanium substrate by laser cladding. The phases, microstructure, microhardness and wear resistance of the composite coatings were studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, microhardness tester and wear tester. The results showed that good metallurgical bonding was achieved between the composite coatings and substrate. The phases mainly were γ-Ni, TiC, TiB2, Ni3B, M23C6 and WC. Most of the WC was dissolved in small pieces of WC during the laser cladding process. The microhardness of the composite coatings was about 3 times that of the titanium substrate and the wear resistance of the composite coatings had a significant increase.

Material corrosion is a common phenomenon. Severe corrosion not only causes material failure, but may also lead to unexpected catastrophic accidents. Therefore, reducing the loss caused by corrosion has become a problem faced by countries around the world. As a surface modification technology, laser cladding (LC) can be used to prepare coatings that can achieve metallurgical bonding with the substrate. High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are a new material with superior anti-corrosion ability. Therefore, HEA coatings prepared by LC have become a research hotspot to improve the anti-corrosive ability of material surfaces. In this work, the effects of LC process parameters, post-processing, and the HEA material system on the anti-corrosion ability of HEA coatings and their mechanisms are reviewed. Among them, the LC process parameters influence the anti-corrosion ability by affecting the macroscopic quality, dilution rate, and uniformity of the coatings. The post-processing enhances the anti-corrosion ability of the coatings by improving the internal defects and refining the grain structure. The anti-corrosion ability of the coatings can be improved by appropriately adding transition metal elements such as Ni, Cr, Co, and rare earth elements such as Ce and Y. However, the lattice distortion, diversification of phase composition, and uneven distribution caused by excess elements will weaken the corrosion protection of the coatings. We reviewed the impact of corrosion medium on the anti-corrosion ability of coatings, in which the temperature and pH value of the corrosion medium affect the quality of the passive film on the surface of the coatings, thereby affecting the anti-corrosion ability of the coatings. Finally, to provide references for future research, the development trend of preparing HEA coatings by LC technology is prospected.
