Previous studies were mostly conducted based on two-dimensional feature space to monitor salinization, while studies on dense long-term salinization monitoring based on three-dimensional feature space have not been reported. Based on Landsat TM/ETM+/OLI images and three-dimensional feature space method, this study introduced six typical salinization surface parameters, including NDVI, salinity index, MSAVI, surface albedo, iron oxide index, wetness index to construct eight different feature space monitoring index. The optimal soil salinization monitoring index model was proposed base on field observed data and then the evolution process of salinization in Yellow River Delta (YRD) were analyzed and revealed during 1984–2022. The salinization monitoring index model of MSAVI-Albedo-IFe2O3 feature space had the highest accuracy with R2 = 0.93 and RMSE = 0.678g/kg. The spatial distribution of salinization in YRD showed an increasing trend from inland southwest to coastal northeast and the salinization intensity showed an increasing trend during 1984–2022 due to the implements of agricultural measures such as planting salt-tolerant crops, microbial remediation and fertility improvement. The rate of salinization deterioration in the northeast part was greater than others. Zones of salinization improvement were mainly located in cultivated land of the southwest parts.

Evaluating and exploring regional eco-environmental quality (EEQ), economic development equality (EDE) and the coupling coordination degree (CCD) at multiple scales is important for realizing regional sustainable development goals. The CCD can reflect both the development level and the interaction relationship of two or more systems. However, relevant previous studies have ignored non-statistical data, lacked multiscale analyses, misused the coupling coordination degree model or have not sufficiently considered economic development equality. In response to these problems, this study integrated multisource remote sensing datasets to calculate and analyse the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) and then used nighttime light data and population density data to calculate the proposed nighttime difference index (NTDI). Next, a modified coupling coordination degree (MCCD) index was proposed to analyse the MCCD between EEQ and EDE. Then, spatiotemporal and multiscale analyses at the county, city, province, urban agglomeration and country levels were performed. Global and local spatial autocorrelation and trend analyses were performed to evaluate the spatial aggregation degree and change trends from 2001 to 2020. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) The EEQ of China displayed a fluctuating upwards trend (0.0048 a−1), with average RSEI values of 0.5950, 0.6277, 0.6164, 0.6311 and 0.6173; the EDE of China showed an upwards trend (0.0298 a−1), with average NTDI values of 0.1271, 0.1635, 0.1642, 0.2181 and 0.2490; and China’s MCCD indicated an upwards trend (0.0220 a−1), with values of 0.4614, 0.5027, 0.4978, 0.5401 and 0.5525. (2) The highest global Moran’s I of NTDI and MCCD was achieved at the city scale, while the highest RSEI was achieved at the county scale. From 2001 to 2020, the spatial agglomeration effect of the RSEI decreased, while that of the NTDI and MCCD increased. (3) A power function relationship occurred between NTDI and MCCD at different scales. Furthermore, the NTDI had a higher contribution to improving the MCCD than the RSEI and the R2 of the fitted curve at different scales ranged from 0.8183 to 0.9915.

This study optimized the slope and slope length factor (LS) and crop management factor (P) of the RUSLE model and then introduced the gravity centre model to analyze the spatial–temporal variation patterns of soil erosion in Yellow River Basin from a new perspective. Results showed that: (1) The improved model of RUSLE with optimized factors of LS and P had better applicability in Yellow River Basin; (2) The average erosion intensity was 2777.5 t/a, which belonged to moderate erosion. The soil erosion intensity of the Yellow River Basin showed an overall trend of increasing firstly (1990–2005) and then decreasing (2005–2015). (3) During 1990–2015, the gravity centre of soil erosion moved to the southwest, indicating that the increment and increasing rate of soil erosion in the southwest parts of the Yellow River Basin were greater than that in the northeast parts. (4) The intensity of soil erosion aggravated with the increasing slope. The sandy soil, chestnut soil, light-grey calcium soil and fluvo aquic soil had severe erosion intensity due to the regional climate and their own physical–chemical structure. The woodland and shrubbery land were more susceptible to soil erosion.

There are significant differences in the dominant driving factors of rocky desertification evolution in different historical periods in southwest karst mountainous areas. However, previous studies were mostly conducted in specific periods. In this study, taking Bijie City as an example, the spatial and temporal evolution pattern of rocky desertification in Bijie City in the recent 35 years was analyzed by introducing the feature space model and the gravity center model, and then the dominant driving factors of rocky desertification in the study area in different historical periods were clarified based on GeoDetector. The results were as follows: (1) The point-to-point B (bare land index)-DI (dryness index) feature space model has high applicability for rocky desertification monitoring, and its inversion accuracy was 91.3%. (2) During the past 35 years, the rocky desertification in Bijie belonged to the moderate rocky desertification on the whole, and zones of intensive and severe rocky desertification were mainly distributed in the Weining Yi, Hui, and Miao Autonomous Region. (3) During 1985–2020, the rocky desertification in Bijie City showed an overall weakening trend (‘weakening–aggravating–weakening’). (4) From 1985 to 2020, the gravity center of rocky desertification in Bijie City moved westward, indicating that the aggravating degree of rocky desertification in the western region of the study area was higher than that in the eastern region. (5) The dominant factors affecting the evolution of rocky desertification in the past 35 years shifted from natural factor (vegetation coverage) to human activity factor (population density). The research results could provide decision supports for the prevention and control of rocky desertification in Bijie City and even the southwest karst mountainous area.
