Extracting damage information of buildings after an earthquake is crucial for emergency rescue and loss assessment. Low-altitude remote sensing by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for emergency rescue has unique advantages. In this study, we establish a remote sensing information-extraction method that combines ultramicro oblique UAV and infrared thermal imaging technology to automatically detect the structural damage of buildings and cracks in external walls. The method consists of four parts: (1) 3D live-action modeling and building structure analysis based on ultramicro oblique images; (2) extraction of damage information of buildings; (3) detection of cracks in walls based on infrared thermal imaging; and (4) integration of detection systems for information of earthquake-damaged buildings. First, a 3D live-action building model is constructed. A multi-view structure image for segmentation can be obtained based on this method. Second, a method of extracting information on damage to building structures using a 3D live-action building model as the geographic reference is proposed. Damage information of the internal structure of the building can be obtained based on this method. Third, based on analyzing the temperature field distribution on the exterior walls of earthquake-damaged buildings, an automatic method of detecting cracks in the walls by using infrared thermal imaging is proposed. Finally, the damage information detection and assessment system is researched and developed, and the system is integrated. Taking earthquake search-and-rescue simulation as an example, the effectiveness of this method is verified. The damage distribution in the internal structure and external walls of buildings in this area is obtained with an accuracy of 78%.

Remote sensing data plays an important role in classifying land use/land cover (LULC) information from various sensors having different spectral, spatial and temporal resolutions. The fusion of an optical image and a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image is significant for the study of LULC change and simulation in cloudy mountain areas. This paper proposes a novel feature-level fusion framework, in which the Landsat operational land imager (OLI) images with different cloud covers, and a fully polarized Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 (ALOS-2) image are selected to conduct LULC classification experiments. We take the karst mountain in Chongqing as a study area, following which the features of the spectrum, texture, and space of the optical and SAR images are extracted, respectively, supplemented by the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), elevation, slope and other relevant information. Furthermore, the fused feature image is subjected to object-oriented multi-scale segmentation, subsequently, an improved support vector machine (SVM) model is used to conduct the experiment. The results showed that the proposed framework has the advantages of multi-source data feature fusion, high classification performance and can be applied in mountain areas. The overall accuracy (OA) was more than 85%, with the Kappa coefficient values of 0.845. In terms of forest, gardenland, water, and artificial surfaces, the precision of fusion image was higher compared to single data source. In addition, ALOS-2 data have a comparative advantage in the extraction of shrubland, water, and artificial surfaces. This work aims to provide a reference for selecting the suitable data and methods for LULC classification in cloudy mountain areas. When in cloudy mountain areas, the fusion features of images should be preferred, during the period of low cloudiness, the Landsat OLI data should be selected, when no optical remote sensing data are available, and the fully polarized ALOS-2 data are an appropriate substitute.

Evaluating and exploring regional eco-environmental quality (EEQ), economic development equality (EDE) and the coupling coordination degree (CCD) at multiple scales is important for realizing regional sustainable development goals. The CCD can reflect both the development level and the interaction relationship of two or more systems. However, relevant previous studies have ignored non-statistical data, lacked multiscale analyses, misused the coupling coordination degree model or have not sufficiently considered economic development equality. In response to these problems, this study integrated multisource remote sensing datasets to calculate and analyse the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) and then used nighttime light data and population density data to calculate the proposed nighttime difference index (NTDI). Next, a modified coupling coordination degree (MCCD) index was proposed to analyse the MCCD between EEQ and EDE. Then, spatiotemporal and multiscale analyses at the county, city, province, urban agglomeration and country levels were performed. Global and local spatial autocorrelation and trend analyses were performed to evaluate the spatial aggregation degree and change trends from 2001 to 2020. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) The EEQ of China displayed a fluctuating upwards trend (0.0048 a−1), with average RSEI values of 0.5950, 0.6277, 0.6164, 0.6311 and 0.6173; the EDE of China showed an upwards trend (0.0298 a−1), with average NTDI values of 0.1271, 0.1635, 0.1642, 0.2181 and 0.2490; and China’s MCCD indicated an upwards trend (0.0220 a−1), with values of 0.4614, 0.5027, 0.4978, 0.5401 and 0.5525. (2) The highest global Moran’s I of NTDI and MCCD was achieved at the city scale, while the highest RSEI was achieved at the county scale. From 2001 to 2020, the spatial agglomeration effect of the RSEI decreased, while that of the NTDI and MCCD increased. (3) A power function relationship occurred between NTDI and MCCD at different scales. Furthermore, the NTDI had a higher contribution to improving the MCCD than the RSEI and the R2 of the fitted curve at different scales ranged from 0.8183 to 0.9915.

With the advent of high spatial resolution remote sensing imagery, numerous image features can be utilized. Applying a reasonable feature selection approach is critical to effectively reduce feature redundancy and improve the efficiency and accuracy of classification. This paper proposes a novel feature selection approach, in which ReliefF, genetic algorithm, and support vector machine (RFGASVM) are integrated to extract buildings. We adopt the ReliefF algorithm to preliminary filter high-dimensional features in the feature database. After eliminating the sorted features, the feature subset and the C and γ parameters of support vector machine (SVM) are encoded into the chromosome of the genetic algorithm. A fitness function is constructed considering the sample identification accuracy, the number of selected features, and the feature cost. The proposed method was applied to high-resolution images obtained from different sensors, GF-2, BJ-2, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). The confusion matrix, precision, recall and F1-score were applied to assess the accuracy. The results showed that the proposed method achieved feature reduction, and the overall accuracy (OA) was more than 85%, with Kappa coefficient values of 0.80, 0.83 and 0.85, respectively. The precision of each image was more than 85%. The time efficiency of the proposed method was two-fold greater than SVM with all the features. The RFGASVM method has the advantages of large feature reduction and high extraction performance and can be applied in feature selection.

Deep learning is an important research method in the remote sensing field. However, samples of remote sensing images are relatively few in real life, and those with markers are scarce. Many neural networks represented by Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) can learn from real samples to generate pseudosamples, rather than traditional methods that often require more time and man-power to obtain samples. However, the generated pseudosamples often have poor realism and cannot be reliably used as the basis for various analyses and applications in the field of remote sensing. To address the abovementioned problems, a pseudolabeled sample generation method is proposed in this work and applied to scene classification of remote sensing images. The improved unconditional generative model that can be learned from a single natural image (Improved SinGAN) with an attention mechanism can effectively generate enough pseudolabeled samples from a single remote sensing scene image sample. Pseudosamples generated by the improved SinGAN model have stronger realism and relatively less training time, and the extracted features are easily recognized in the classification network. The improved SinGAN can better identify sub-jects from images with complex ground scenes compared with the original network. This mechanism solves the problem of geographic errors of generated pseudosamples. This study incorporated the generated pseudosamples into training data for the classification experiment. The result showed that the SinGAN model with the integration of the attention mechanism can better guarantee feature extraction of the training data. Thus, the quality of the generated samples is improved and the classification accuracy and stability of the classification network are also enhanced.
