In this paper, we propose a switchable bi-functional metamaterial device based on a hybrid gold-vanadium dioxide (VO2) nanostructure. Utilizing the property of a metal-to-insulator transition in VO2, perfect absorption and asymmetric transmission (AT) can be thermally switched for circularly polarized light in the near-infrared region. When VO2 is in the metallic state, the designed metamaterial device behaves as a chiral-selective plasmonic perfect absorber, which can result in an optical circular dichroism (CD) response with a maximum value ∼ 0.7. When VO2 is in the insulating state, the proposed metamaterial device exhibits a dual-band AT effect. The combined hybridization model and electromagnetic field distributions are presented to explain the physical mechanisms of chiral-selective perfect absorption and AT effect, respectively. The influences of structure parameters on CD response and AT effect are also discussed. Moreover, the proposed switchable bi-functional device is robust against the incident angle for obtaining perfect absorption and strong CD response as well as the AT effect. Our work may provide a promising path for the development of multifunctional optoelectronic devices, such as thermal emitters, optical modulators, CD spectroscopy, optical isolator, etc.

We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a chiral-selective plasmonic absorber by utilizing n-shaped-resonators in the visible frequencies. Our metasurface design enables chiral-selective absorption bands, in which absorption peaks for left-handed circularly polarized and right-handed circularly polarized occur at different resonance wavelengths resulting in significant circular dichroism (CD). Both simulated and measured absorption spectra exhibit maximum absorptions exceeding 80% associated with a CD value of ~0.5. Such a chiral plasmonic metasurface absorber with high performance could find applications in optical filters, non-linear optics, thermal emitters, and hot-electron collection devices.

When surface plasmon resonance (SPR) occurs, the incident light is absorbed by the surface of the SPR structure, thus minimizing the intensity of the reflected light. Therefore, the SPR method is adopted in this paper to achieve perfect absorption of the absorbent. In this paper, we first propose a multi-frequency broadband absorber structure based on graphene SPR, which uses the continuous resonance of patterned graphene surface plasmon in the frequency spectrum to form a multi-frequency broadband absorption. In this simulation, a sandwich-stack structure was adopted, whereby the patterned graphene is situated on top of the SiO2 layer and the metal layer. The broad-band absorption bands of the absorber were obtained as 4.14–4.38 THz, 5.78–6.36 THz, and 7.87–8.66 THz through the analog simulation of finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD) solutions. Then, based on the multi-layer resonant unit structure, through the superposition and combination of absorbing units responding to different frequency bands, the perfect absorption of ultra-wideband is achieved. The data results illustrate that the total absorption bandwidth of the absorber is 2.26 THz, and the relative absorption bandwidth Bw is equal to 28.93%. The electric field in X-Y direction of the absorber in the perfect absorption band is analyzed, respectively, and the dynamic tunability of the absorber is studied. Finally, we studied whether the absorbing structure still has efficient absorption characteristics for the two polarization modes when the incident angle is changed from 0° to 70°. The structure model proposed has potential value for application in terahertz photoelectric detection, filtering, and electromagnetic shielding.

In this paper, we present a multi-functional terahertz metamaterial device based on the gold and vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ). Availing of the phase transition characteristic of VO 2 , the switchable performance between perfect absorption and broadband asymmetric transmission (AT) can be realized. When VO 2 acts like a metal, the proposed metamaterial device behaves as a selectively perfect absorber for linearly polarized lights. By transforming the phase of VO 2 into isolating state, broadband AT with high efficiencies over 90% can be achieved in the region from 1.5 THz to 2.5 THz. Moreover, perfect polarization conversion can be simultaneously realized associated with the AT effect. The Fabry-Pérot-like cavity model and the electric field distributions are employed to explain the physical mechanism of the above phenomena. Besides, the proposed metamaterial shows a high tolerance to the incident angle for achieving perfect absorption and broadband AT effect. Our designed device may provide a new avenue for developing multi-functional metamaterial devices in the THz region.
