Throughout this paper we try to propose several updated theories about leadership strategies considering the new framework and coordinates imposed by the digital age. By operating a literature review, firstly we will define the intriguing concepts of: digital age, digital leader and digital leadership. Nowadays leaders must understand the global technological revolution and integrate with it in their daily business routine. Within the sections of the paper we will analyze the different features of the digital knowledge age, considering issues like the work environment, the new type of employees or the new skills. We believe that by mapping all these novel aspects we will emphasize which are the gaps between the current state and the potential one. Acknowledging the opportunities of the digital age is empowering both for managers and employees in terms of achieving their success. We will provide an analysis of the most important traits of a digital leader and their necessity in the present environment. Even if great theorists consider that a leader’s essential characteristics are timeless we will argue which are the substantial changes generated by digitalization. Furthermore, we will discuss the potential knowledge strategies to be applied for effective leadership in the digital business environment. Throughout this paper we want to bring to attention which are the major impactful connections between the trends of digitalization and leadership concepts. In the final section of the paper we will present our conclusions and propose for discussion further challenges of the digital age, mainly from managerial perspective.

Clusters of innovation are global economic “hot spots” where new technologies germinate at an astounding rate and where pools of capital, expertise, and talent foster the development of new industries and new ways of doing business. They are vibrant, effervescent ecosystems composed of startups, businesses that support the startup process, and mature enterprises (many of whom evolved rapidly from a startup history). In these ecosystems, resources of people, capital, and know-how are fluidly mobile and the pace of transactions is driven by a relentless pursuit of opportunity, staged financing, and short business model cycles. The aim of this paper, clustering, which is an important model in the development of the countries and the concept of innovation have been reviewed together. The most prominent feature of the industry is to produce Technology. Countries to focus on knowledge-intensive industries and businesses as a result of regional cluster policies for innovation are seen that there is a relation between. Clustering is an important model for an innovational development in Romania. The analysis was carried out for a period of 3 years, for which there were registered the main achievements in the field of product innovation, processes, organizational forms and marketing methods, new or significantly improved, obtained by companies, starting from January 2016 until December 2018, representing Romania’s contribution to the evaluation of the results of the European statistical research on innovation, 2018. Following the innovative activities in which the companies are engaged does the characterization of the innovation. The National Institute of Statistics provides the necessary means for carrying out statistical research on innovation in businesses in the business and industrial environment.

The fast and unpredictable changes in the business environment lead to significant changes in the future job market. For current business students, the future will offer many new opportunities for their employment but, at the same time, it will also create many threats disguised in the disappearing jobs. Business education centered mainly on knowledge transmission is challenged to switch towards a competence-based approach which includes knowledge, skills, and attitudes. The present research focuses on the need to change the paradigm of business education by creating a new learning environment centered on business competencies, and on a new knowledge ecosystem dynamics. The approach uses both qualitative and quantitative methods. In the first phase the research is focused on a critical literature review, and extraction of ideas for the next phase based on quantitative methods. In order to evaluate the students’ perception on the need of competence-based business education, a questionnaire has been designed and applied to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in business and management programs. Data is processed by using SPSS and deriving six logistic regressions based on the conceptual model designed similar to a hierarchy Findings coming from students show a significant awareness for the need of paradigm shift in business education, from knowledge transfer to business competence development.

The economic progress of the last century has made the world seem smaller, has shortened distances and provided an increase in the efficiency with which the ‘time’ resource is used. Currently, due to technological advancement, change and diversification of the means of communication, we can get in touch or chat with another person in every corner of the world, no matter how far. Moreover, technology imports raise standards of living and bring improvements to the service sector. The digital revolution is not only present, but it is increasing every day. Knowledge fundamentally transforms every sector of our economy - from health up to transport and energy and beyond. The scope, magnitude and omnipresence of these disruptive innovations are truly unprecedented. The objective of our work is to present the theoretical approaches regarding the information society and its quantification in Romania and in the European context on the basis of specific indicators. By analyzing these indicators, we try to demonstrate the position of our country at world level in terms of ICT. In order to analyze comparatively the situation of ICT and their impact on the business sector, two major indicators for this field were analyzed - the State ICT Development Index (IDI) and the DESI Index.

The emergence of knowledge economy and knowledge management revealed the need for reconsidering the concept of knowledge in a larger framework than that created by philosophers from ancient times. While the epistemology as a theory of knowledge and justification considers knowledge as a justified true belief, experts in knowledge management consider knowledge as a strategic resource. The new economic interpretation of knowledge as a strategic resource and a key contributor to achieving a competitive advantage generated a search of new metaphors to supply the attributes needed in constructing the new framework of understanding and operating with a working concept of knowledge in management. The most widespread knowledge metaphors are based on analogies with stocks, flows, and stock-and-flows. These metaphors induce, beyond some useful attributes, the Newtonian mechanics paradigm which is limited by the properties of linear spaces and reversible processes. The purpose of this paper is to show how we can enrich the theory of knowledge by introducing the concepts of knowledge fields and knowledge dynamics based on metaphorical thinking and the thermodynamics principles. The focus of our research is the energy metaphor which considers energy as a source semantic field. The main outcome of the present research is that knowledge can be considered as a field, which is manifesting in different forms like energy. This thermodynamics framework opens new directions for research in knowledge management, decision-making and leadership.

The purpose of this paper is to explore how students acquire entrepreneurial skills requested by a knowledge economy, in a country with an emergent economy. Knowledge economy is based dominantly on processing intangible resources, which needs different skills from the knowledge workers than from the industrial workers. Knowledge economy develops fast, including the countries with emergent economies like the Romania. Universities have to adapt to the requirements imposed by the knowledge economy and to change their teaching processes based on knowledge transfer into developing students’ skills which will allow them to perform in a turbulent business environment. The paper focuses on the entrepreneurial skills and presents an evaluation of students’ entrepreneurial skills in a Romanian university, students being enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs of economics and business. The set of entrepreneurial skills considered in this paper have been selected based on literature, and they are expected to define the entrepreneurial behavior by the 2030 time horizon. The following skills have been considered: complex-problem solving, critical thinking, originality thinking, active learning, and judgement and decision making. For the quantitative research we developed and applied a questionnaire in order to assess the level of these skills for the students at “Stefan cel Mare” University in Suceava, Romania. We processed the obtained data set by using the specialized software package SPSS, version 25, and applied the statistical function of Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) for the purpose of identifying which are the main factors influencing their perceptions about the investigated categories of skills. The results of the Exploratory Factor Analysis revealed a set of 5 factors which we correlated to validate the research hypothesis. Our results show that economics and business education contributes essentially to the development of these entrepreneurial skills.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze how universities can develop dynamic capabilities based on their strategic resources in order to increase their competitiveness in the knowledge economy. ”Dynamic capabilities” is a concept introduced by Teece, Pisano, and Shuen (1997) to emphasize the managerial capacity of a given organization of using efficiently its strategic resources in transforming opportunities in business success. They reflect the capacity of the organization to sense, seize, adapt to the changing environment. For a university, the most important strategic resources are information, knowledge, and ideas which constitute its intellectual capital. The present paper is analyzing critically these strategic resources of a university and the necessary conditions to develop dynamic capabilities in order to use efficiently these resources in a turbulent economic environment. Universities are in the knowledge economy the most important hubs for knowledge creation and its transfer to the students, as well as to their communities. At the same time, professors contribute to the development of the generic thinking skills of their students to help them for employability in a future with many new jobs and new business activities.

The purpose of this paper is to present a new construct of the intellectual capital structure, based on the multifield theory of knowledge and the concept of nonlinear integrators and to identify the knowledge strategies to enhance the intellectual capital of universities. The paper presents a new approach, based on metaphorical thinking and thermodynamics logic in structuring the intellectual capital, based on the multifield theory of knowledge into its basic building blocks. Considering the two levels of intellectual capital, the paper presents the main knowledge strategies to enhance the university intellectual capital. The basic building blocks of the intellectual capital are: rational, emotional, and spiritual intellectual capital. Each building block is based on the corresponding field of knowledge. There are two significant levels of intellectual capital: potential and operational. Analyzing the university intellectual capital by using this new approach is much more realistic than in the previous approaches. The new approach is based on a thermodynamics paradigm, which means we need to develop new ways of thinking, evaluating, and enhancing the intellectual capital. The paper presents an original approach, based on metaphorical thinking, by considering basic ideas from the energy realm and thermodynamics theory. Also, the paper presents a matrix of possible knowledge strategies to increase the intellectual capital of universities.

Throughout the present paper we want to argue the idea that higher education is strongly linked with research, innovation, and competitive advantage and thus plays a crucial role not only for the individual and societal development but also in the process of delivering the National and European Strategy, to drive forward growth. Universities are the main actors responsible to provide the highly skilled human capital that Europe needs in order to create jobs, successful businesses, and prosperity. The ambitious aim to become a world-class university has its roots not just in rational (financial) considerations, but also in the symbolic role of such universities. The rankings made the competition between the states very visible and thus, are most commonly recognized as an indicator of success due to excellence-driven policies. Within this work we bring arguments and examples about which are the most efficient strategies of world-class universities. The first section of the paper we argue the roles of universities within nowadays economic and social world. The second section of the paper highlights the conceptual issue of world-class universities, the motivation and the determinants of such a goal. Within sections three of the paper we benchmark the key factors of two main international ranking (the THES and SJTU) and we analyse the successful strategies of famous world-class universities. According to the research conclusions and to our considerations we suggest that a valid option would be for universities to follow the international trend towards becoming a world-class university. Also an opportunity would be to develop themselves into learning organizations.

Due to the accelerated pace with which developments in information and communications technology are taking place, digital society and the digital economy have become real and, in turn, are generating specific challenges. In this environment, digital skills and competencies are essential in order to achieve professional success and the personal development of any individual. Through this paper, we aim to bring to light the basic concepts in the field of digital technology and at the same time, the topical implications on the educational processes. The main objective of the paper is to reflect the impact of digitalization on the education sector both in the European context and in Romania. The importance of the topic under consideration can be justified with many arguments, but we will mainly appeal to the need to meet the objectives proposed by the 2020 Strategy in the field of education, research and development at European level and in Romania. Considering the previous premises, in the paper, we will present information about the concepts of digitalization and digitization and the implications in the field of education. The realization of this paper is based on the study of the specialized literature, of the official documents published by the European Commission offices and of the statistics issued by the specialized bodies.
