Knowledge management developed in the last decades as a dynamic symbiosis between science and art with significant implications on business and business education. Knowledge management operates within the organizational management, but it focuses on intangible resources, which are distinguished from the tangible ones as a result of their abstraction, metaphorical semantic, and nonlinearity. The purpose of the present paper is to explore the impact of knowledge management on business education through the mediation of academic curriculum and the influence of the business environment. The methodology is based on both qualitative and quantitative research methods. The qualitative phase focuses on a critical literature search and a semantic analysis of the main concepts and ideas, which allowed us to construct the research model and design a questionnaire addressed to business students and professors. The quantitative approach uses the statistical software packages SPSS 26.0 version, including the PROCESS macro for SPSS version 3.5 and the known reliability, validation, and interpretation criteria. Findings show that knowledge management impacts business education through the mediation of the academic curriculum and the influence of the business environment. The originality of the present research comes from the dynamics between knowledge management and business education and the research model’s design.

The pandemic of COVID‐19 is considered the most complex global process generated so far due to its unprecedented power of disruption, interconnection, and lockdowns in all the domains of our life, from health to economy, education, research, culture, sports, and social isolation. The COVID‐19 crisis came like any other natural disaster, finding people and organizations unprepared for disruptive power and social nexus. The unthinkable became a reality, and people realized that organizations and governments have no strategies to fight against such a pandemic. They found out that the strategic knowledge gap is enormous, and the only way to navigate this crisis is to create emergent knowledge strategies. This paper aims to analyze the characteristics of emergent knowledge strategies by comparing them with deliberate knowledge strategies and showing how people can develop such new kinds of strategies. The analysis is based on criteria like time perception, systems thinking, type of knowledge, type of changes, and complexity.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the complexity of the COVID-19 crisis by using the grounded theory approach. It is a new approach based on a data set constituted from published papers, reports delivered by official organizations or research institutes, working papers, and public information in media. Each of these documents presents data, information, knowledge, and ideas, usually from a single perspective. The present research uses the method of grounded theory and constructs an integrated model of analysis that explores the complexity of the global crisis induced by COVID-19. For the present research, the data were extracted from published papers focused on different aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic induced economic crisis. That means a meta-analysis of the initial quantitative data but performed from a semantic perspective. The findings show that COVID-19 induced economic crisis is a complex phenomenon that is influenced directly and indirectly by the health system crisis, governmental policies, and behavior of people. The integrated model we got can be used as a tool in a further investigation for a deeper understanding of the complexity of COVID-19. The originality of this paper comes from creating a meta-analysis with the grounded theory of different aspects investigated in a series of papers and constructing a dynamic model capable of approaching the complexity of this Black Swan phenomenon.

The purpose of this paper is to present the evolution of the concept of entropy from engineering to knowledge management, going through information theory, linguistic entropy, and economic entropy. The concept of entropy was introduced by Rudolf Clausius in thermodynamics in 1865 as a measure of heat transfer between two solid bodies which have different temperatures. As a natural phenomenon, heat flows from the body with a higher temperature toward the body with a lower temperature. However, Rudolf Clausius defined only the change in entropy of the system and not its absolute entropy. Ludwig Boltzmann defined later the absolute entropy by studying the gas molecules behavior in a thermal field. The computational formula defined by Boltzmann relates the microstates of a thermal system with its macrostates. The more uniform the probability distribution of the microstates is the higher the entropy is. The second law of thermodynamics says that in open systems, when there is no intervention from outside, the entropy of the system increases continuously. The concept of entropy proved to be very powerful, fact for which many researchers tried to extend its semantic area and the application domain. In 1948, Claude E. Shannon introduced the concept of information entropy, having the same computational formula as that defined by Boltzmann, but with a different interpretation. This concept solved many engineering communications problems and is used extensively in information theory. Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen used the concept of entropy and the second law of thermodynamics in economics and business. Today, many researchers in economics use the concept of entropy for analyzing different phenomena. The present paper explores the possibility of using the concept of knowledge entropy in knowledge management.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the latent variables which support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in becoming learning organizations. These latent variables represent abstract ideas that cannot be measured directly in practice, and they need to be explored by using different sets of other variables or indicators defined specifically for certain research of the business environment. The concept of “the learning organization” has been introduced into knowledge management literature about 30 years ago, but due to its complexity and high level of abstractness, its implementation in real life or organizations produced insufficient results for developing a well-defined model and a convincing managerial approach. However, the attractiveness of the learning organization is so appealing that researchers continue to investigate the complex mechanisms and processes supporting it. Our research is such an effort in exploring the latent variables for the small and medium-sized enterprises from the North-Easter region of Romania in their drive of becoming learning organizations. Our research is based on a comprehensive literature search and a quantitative approach supported by a survey and statistical processing of the collected data. We processed 950 valid questionnaires obtained from 147 small and medium-sized enterprises from the North-Eastern region of Romania. Statistical processing was done by using specialized software. We perform a Factor Analysis with IBM SPSS v.19, and then a Confirmatory Factor Analysis with AMOS v.18. Finally, we obtained six latent variables that support the transformation of SMEs into learning organizations.

The fast and unpredictable changes in the business environment lead to significant changes in the future job market. For current business students, the future will offer many new opportunities for their employment but, at the same time, it will also create many threats disguised in the disappearing jobs. Business education centered mainly on knowledge transmission is challenged to switch towards a competence-based approach which includes knowledge, skills, and attitudes. The present research focuses on the need to change the paradigm of business education by creating a new learning environment centered on business competencies, and on a new knowledge ecosystem dynamics. The approach uses both qualitative and quantitative methods. In the first phase the research is focused on a critical literature review, and extraction of ideas for the next phase based on quantitative methods. In order to evaluate the students’ perception on the need of competence-based business education, a questionnaire has been designed and applied to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in business and management programs. Data is processed by using SPSS and deriving six logistic regressions based on the conceptual model designed similar to a hierarchy Findings coming from students show a significant awareness for the need of paradigm shift in business education, from knowledge transfer to business competence development.

The primary purpose of this research is to present the evolution and current state of knowledge regarding the dematerialization of banking products and services in the digital age. The paper discusses the central issues regarding the dematerialization of money, the dematerialization of securities and the dematerialization of the contract, trends with direct impact on the possibility of dematerializing the products and services offered by banking institutions, by means of an investigative discourse and viewpoint into and over the shift from tangible to intangible monetary assets. It mainly explores the impact of dematerialization on certain processes performed by banks (customer enrollment and management) and on certain products and services offered by banks (payment services, lending services, etc.) from the perspective of the latest technological innovations and the influence exerted by fintech companies. The chapter clearly establishes the synergy link between environmental factors (increased competition, technological advance, legislative changes) and the ability of banking institutions to adapt to new conditions by changing the business model. The research ends with a series of conclusions regarding the way in which the tendencies towards dematerialization affect the activity and the business model adopted by the banking institutions. The content of the research report is useful both to the managers in the financial field and to the authorities that legislate this field, especially to those in Romania, who can use the conclusions of the report to elaborate policies in order to advance the degree of digitization of the Romanian banking system.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the limitations induced in Knowledge Management by the processes of linearization and discretization, which happen frequently in decision-making. Linearization is a result of applying linear thinking models in decision-making, regardless of the complexity of knowledge management phenomena. Knowledge and all the other intangible resources are nonlinear entities and they should be evaluated with nonlinear metrics. However, in many situations managers use simple solutions based on linear thinking models and get large errors in their decision-making, with significant negative consequences in management. Also, linear thinking model is dominant in legislation, which may lead to significant errors in managerial decision-making. Discretization is a process in which an entity with a continuous representation, like a knowledge field, is transformed into a piecewise entity to be handled more easily. Also, social media uses discretized systems for different evaluations which should be interpreted accordingly. For instance, counting the number of “like” on Facebook for a certain message or image may lead to the conclusion that friendship is proportional with the number of “friends”, which might not be in concordance with reality. Knowledge management is a complex activity dealing with knowledge, which means nonlinear entities. Using linear thinking models and discretization methods in evaluations and decision-making may lead to significant errors and negative consequences.

The emergence of knowledge economy and knowledge management revealed the need for reconsidering the concept of knowledge in a larger framework than that created by philosophers from ancient times. While the epistemology as a theory of knowledge and justification considers knowledge as a justified true belief, experts in knowledge management consider knowledge as a strategic resource. The new economic interpretation of knowledge as a strategic resource and a key contributor to achieving a competitive advantage generated a search of new metaphors to supply the attributes needed in constructing the new framework of understanding and operating with a working concept of knowledge in management. The most widespread knowledge metaphors are based on analogies with stocks, flows, and stock-and-flows. These metaphors induce, beyond some useful attributes, the Newtonian mechanics paradigm which is limited by the properties of linear spaces and reversible processes. The purpose of this paper is to show how we can enrich the theory of knowledge by introducing the concepts of knowledge fields and knowledge dynamics based on metaphorical thinking and the thermodynamics principles. The focus of our research is the energy metaphor which considers energy as a source semantic field. The main outcome of the present research is that knowledge can be considered as a field, which is manifesting in different forms like energy. This thermodynamics framework opens new directions for research in knowledge management, decision-making and leadership.

The purpose of this paper is to present a holistic view of the organizational knowledge dynamics, as an alternative to the current research focusing on different aspects of this complex and nonlinear phenomenon. Organizational knowledge is a semantic construct which has been developed as a result of growing importance of knowledge as a strategic resource, and it constitutes an integration of all forms of knowledge co-existing within an organization. Organizational knowledge varies in time and its dynamics is vital for organizational growth and for achieving a competitive advantage. Our approach is based on metaphorical thinking and on critical analysis of the present research concerning organizational knowledge and organizational intellectual dynamics. Going beyond the iceberg and stocks-and-flows metaphors, our research is based on the energy metaphor and the entropy law. The conceptual approach used and the final results obtained demonstrate the importance and utility of the holistic view in understanding more profoundly the complexity of the organizational knowledge dynamics.

The intellectual capital research and practice entered in the last years into a visible decline due to some barriers in understanding its intangible nature and designing Newtonian metrics for its measurement and reporting. Inertial thinking is very powerful in promoting new approaches for the need of a new perspective in working with intellectual capital. Unfortunately, even some top journals in the domain of intellectual capital remained trapped into this Newtonian logic and standard statistical analysis, as a result of the mind-set of their editorial staff and reviewers. The purpose of this paper is to present a critical analysis of the intellectual capital research and practice today and to reveal some of the most important barriers in understanding the complexity and nature of the intellectual capital. These barriers manifest like myths in approaching the research into intellectual capital, myths that create a false reality and false research questions, which enter into collision with the real life of companies and their business. The paper identifies seven myths which created a Newtonian version of the non-Newtonian reality, and a golden rule for further research into the intellectual capital of organizations. The conclusion of the present critical analysis is that we need a new approach to understand the complexity of the intellectual capital and new metrics to measure it.

Researching on the intellectual capital in universities is a challenging task due to the complexity of the intellectual processes within any university and the fuzziness of the basic concepts and methodologies developed so far. Universities are among the oldest social institutions and they concentrate high densities of intellectual capital. The concept of intellectual capital has been created as a result of increasing significantly the role of intangibles in economy and of the dramatic split between the book value and market value of the new companies based on intensive knowledge processes. Intellectual capital represents that component of the total capital of any organization which incorporates all intangible resources and their transformations. Intellectual capital is highly nonlinear by comparison with the capital containing tangible resources, which has a linear structure and Newtonian dynamics. The canonical structure of the intellectual capital is composed of human capital, structural capital, and relationship capital. This structural model has been used extensively in evaluating and reporting the intellectual capital of organizations, including universities. However, the Newtonian paradigm constitutes an important limitation in understanding properly both the nature of intellectual capital and how to manage it efficiently. Our research question is focused on how we can change that paradigm with a better one able to represents more adequately the nature and the basic structure of the intellectual capital. The methodology we used is based on in depth literature analysis, metaphorical thinking, critical thinking, and the multifield theory of knowledge. As a result of our research, this paper presents a new approach of the intellectual capital and its application to the universities.

This book is intended to spark a discourse on, and contribute to finding a clear consensus in, the debate between conceptualizing a knowledge strategy and planning a knowledge strategy. It explores the complex relationship between the notions of knowledge and strategy in the business context, one that is of practical importance to companies. After reviewing the extant literature, the book shows how the concept of knowledge strategies can be seen as a new perspective for exploring business strategies. It proposes a new approach that clarifies how planned and emergent knowledge strategies allow companies to make projections into the uncertain and unpredictable future that dominates today’s economy.

All the statistics and evaluations show that the Knowledge Economy is our future. However, a close look at the developed economies demonstrates that the Knowledge Economy is already here, shaping our present time. Although there are many definitions of this new economic framework, their core content stresses the importance of data, information, and knowledge in the production of goods and delivering services in creating value for society. For instance, Powell and Snellman (2004, p.1999) define the knowledge economy as “production and services based on knowledge-intensive activities that contribute to an accelerated pace of technical and scientific advance, as well as a rapid obsolescence. The key component of the knowledge economy is a greater reliance on intellectual capabilities than on physical inputs or natural resources”. In the knowledge economy, knowledge becomes a strategic resource (Davenport & Prusak, 2000; Nonaka & Takeuchi, 1995) and knowledge strategies contribute directly to the competitive advantage (Bratianu & Bolisani, 2015). In this new economy, data, information, and knowledge are the driving forces of development and the knowledge economy is the engine of the global economy growth...

The purpose of this chapter is to explore the new ideas promoted by the sharing economy and to explain the novel business models operating in today’s turbulent economic environment. Sharing economy departs from the existing economic structures and focuses on ownership, by promoting flexible networking architectures and free access to sharing resources and activities. Considering Uber as a symbol of the new business dynamics, the chapter reveals some of the emerging changes and their role in shaping the new business environment. Uber comes with a new business model which is based on ownership outsourcing and the transformation of its drivers from employees into microentrepreneurs. The whole business operation is done through a powerful digital platform which provides fast connections between the managers, drivers and people using transportation services. Also, Uber introduces a price dynamics mechanism which computes the transportation costs as a function of demand and supply in that particular context and time. This system constitutes and effective core competence for achieving competitive advantage.

Purpose The classical approach of teaching and learning mostly based on knowledge transfer is questionable as knowledge life cycle is shortening and new type of jobs appear every day with new knowledge request. In this vein, the purpose of this paper is to investigate how to switch the focus from learning knowledge to learning generic skills liable to help future professionals to think and learn by doing. Design/methodology/approach The research is based on a 30-item questionnaire that was addressed to over 500 students involved in management and business undergraduate and graduate programs from two well-reputed Romanian universities. Three hundred and forty questionnaires were filled in and processed using SPSS, version 19. Additionally, a factorial analysis was performed, with a view to extract the most important factors that are involved in developing generic skills in university programs. Findings Results demonstrate that most of the students from the undergraduate programs prefer the classical approach – less implication and responsibility in doing a harder conceptual work – while most students from the master programs are open to the new perspective of learning to learn, namely, to developing generic skills. Research limitations/implications In the new turbulent business landscape, universities face a significant change in teaching their students. Although the research adds to the value of the extant literature on generic skills (also known as core skills), it is mainly focused on a Romanian sample, thus reflecting a context-based perspective. Originality/value The current study provides a preliminary insight into the perception of Romanian students about developing generic skills and into their readiness to assume the role of main actors in the learning process.
