Unexploded ordnance (UXO), which causes many civilian casualties every year, has become a serious environmental problem. To deal with the problem, we have developed a new drone-based transient electromagnetic (TEM) system, which was designed for the UXO detection through very low altitude measurements. Drone-based TEM system uses the rotorcraft equipped with central loop TEM device to realize the UXO detection. The system was more safe and efficient than a ground-based TEM system in UXO detection. Compared with the airborne magnetic method or helicopter-borne TEM system, it has the advantages of low cost, flight safety, and so on. In this letter, the system characteristics are introduced in detail, providing the theoretical analysis of the system in UXO detection and verification of model data. Finally, through the UXO detection in the former weapon test base, the results show that the system is effective and successful in UXO detection.

Severe water inrush currently halts the excavation of the Qinling Water Transportation Tunnel and has even stopped tunneling. Based on the geologic conditions of the construction area, the source of water inrush is abundant groundwater in fractured granite. To accurately predict water inrush, we must know the location, geometry, and boundary information of water-abundant zones before excavation. We have developed a field study of integrated seismic and transient electromagnetic (TEM) applications to map the water-abundant zones ahead of the tunnel face. Before the in-tunnel survey, numerical experiments based on excavation and drilling records verified the feasibility of our scheme. To reveal the fractured zones that may be filled with groundwater, an equitraveltime plane algorithm was used in the seismic data processing. Then, the TEM apparent resistivity was calculated to investigate the water-bearing condition of the fractured zones. To detect the water-abundant zone boundaries, we conducted migration imaging of the TEM pseudowavefield that was extracted from the measured TEM signals. A correlation stacking process to extract the TEM pseudowavefield was used to mitigate the ill-posed effect in the inverse wavefield transformation and obtain boundary information of the water-abundant zones. As expected, the results revealed the depth and geometry of the front and rear boundaries of two water-abundant zones 30 m ahead of the tunnel face, which is consistent with drilling and excavation records after the survey. The results of our case study indicate that the integration of seismic imaging, apparent resistivity imaging, and TEM pseudowavefield migration is an efficient and cost-effective method to provide the location, geometry, and boundary information of water-abundant zones.

Unknown coal seam goafs will pose various safety hazards in construction and engineering designs, thus the accurate detections of coal seam goafs have become engineering problems that urgently require effective solutions. Multi-grounded source transient electromagnetic methods have the advantages of large detection depths and the easy deployment of emission sources. Therefore, they can be used for explorations in such complex areas as mountains, lakes and swamps. Previously, grounded source transient electromagnetic methods had only one emission source arranged on the surface, and were relatively rarely used in field explorations with multi-grounded sources. This study analyses the electromagnetic response differences between multi-grounded sources and a single-grounded source. The results reveal that the electromagnetic responses of multi-grounded sources were larger. Transient electromagnetic signals were be targeted using combinations of multi-grounded sources, which successfully strengthened the detection abilities. As a result, this study was able to achieve the goals of increasing the detection depths and improving the ability to distinguish geological anomalies. In addition, this research investigation referred to the theory of implicit functions and used the z components of the decay voltage to calculate the apparent resistivity. Finally, the results of the field data of a coal goaf located in Gansu Province, China, showed that the applied multi-grounded sources transient electromagnetic method could obtain higher resolution in coal seam goaf resistivity distribution information.

The transient electromagnetic (TEM) method is widely used in near-surface geophysical prospecting. The high-precision forward and inversion of large-scale complex models is a challenging problem. It is difficult to solve the large-scale problems using the direct solvers due to the large memory requirements. In this article, we present a restarting polynomial Krylov method for modeling 3-D large-scale TEM responses. The mimetic finite volume method is carried out for spatial discretization. The step-off TEM response then can be expressed as a matrix exponential function. The restarting polynomial Krylov method is used to solve the matrix exponential function. For a given restart subspace dimension, the residual is used to obtain the forward response at any time that meets the given accuracy. This method does not need to solve large-scale linear equations. Furthermore, the memory usage is mainly determined by the number of spatial discrete grids and the restart subspace order. The numerical experiments of large-scale model demonstrated that the method is accurate and uses limited memory.
