Since most classifiers are biased toward the dominant class, class imbalance is a challenging problem in machine learning. The most popular approaches to solving this problem include oversampling minority examples and undersampling majority examples. Oversampling may increase the probability of overfitting, whereas undersampling eliminates examples that may be crucial to the learning process. We present a linear time resampling method based on random data partitioning and a majority voting rule to address both concerns, where an imbalanced dataset is partitioned into a number of small subdatasets, each of which must be class balanced. After that, a specific classifier is trained for each subdataset, and the final classification result is established by applying the majority voting rule to the results of all of the trained models. We compared the performance of the proposed method to some of the most well-known oversampling and undersampling methods, employing a range of classifiers, on 33 benchmark machine learning class-imbalanced datasets. The classification results produced by the classifiers employed on the generated data by the proposed method were comparable to most of the resampling methods tested, with the exception of SMOTEFUNA, which is an oversampling method that increases the probability of overfitting. The proposed method produced results that were comparable to the Easy Ensemble (EE) undersampling method. As a result, for solving the challenge of machine learning from class-imbalanced datasets, we advocate using either EE or our method.

Biometric technology has received a lot of attention in recent years. One of the most prevalent biometric traits is the finger-knuckle print (FKP). Because the dorsal region of the finger is not exposed to surfaces, FKP would be a dependable and trustworthy biometric. We provide an FKP framework that uses the VGG-19 deep learning model to extract deep features from FKP images in this paper. The deep features are collected from the VGG-19 model’s fully connected layer 6 (F6) and fully connected layer 7 (F7). After applying multiple preprocessing steps, such as combining features from different layers and performing dimensionality reduction using principal component analysis (PCA), the extracted deep features are put to the test. The proposed system’s performance is assessed using experiments on the Delhi Finger Knuckle Dataset employing a variety of common classifiers. The best identification result was obtained when the Artificial neural network (ANN) classifier was applied to the principal components of the averaged feature vector of F6 and F7 deep features, with 95% of the data variance preserved. The findings also demonstrate the feasibility of employing these deep features in an FKP recognition system.

Purpose: The aim of this paper is to experimentally evaluate the effectiveness of the state-of-the-art printed Arabic text recognition systems to determine open areas for future improvements. In addition, this paper proposes a standard protocol with a set of metrics for measuring the effectiveness of Arabic optical character recognition (OCR) systems to assist researchers in comparing different Arabic OCR approaches.Design/methodology/approach: This paper describes an experiment to automatically evaluate four well-known Arabic OCR systems using a set of performance metrics. The evaluation experiment is conducted on a publicly available printed Arabic dataset comprising 240 text images with a variety of resolution levels, font types, font styles and font sizes.Findings: The experimental results show that the field of character recognition for printed Arabic still requires further research to reach an efficient text recognition method for Arabic script.Originality/value: To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first work that provides a comprehensive automated evaluation of Arabic OCR systems with respect to the characteristics of Arabic script and, in addition, proposes an evaluation methodology that can be used as a benchmark by researchers and therefore will contribute significantly to the enhancement of the field of Arabic script recognition.

The involvement of wireless sensor networks in large-scale real-time applications is exponentially growing. These applications can range from hazardous area supervision to military applications. In such critical contexts, the simultaneous improvement of the quality of service and the network lifetime represents a big challenge. To meet these requirements, using multiple mobile sinks can be a key solution to accommodate the variations that may affect the network. Recent studies were based on predefined mobility models for sinks and relied on multi-hop routing techniques. Besides, most of these studies focused only on improving energy consumption without considering QoS metrics. In this paper, multiple mobile sinks with random mobile models are used to establish a tradeoff between power consumption and the quality of service. The simulation results show that using hierarchical data routing with random mobile sinks represents an efficient method to balance the distribution of the energy levels of nodes and to reduce the overall power consumption. Moreover, it is proven that the proposed routing methods allow for minimizing the latency of the transmitted data, increasing the reliability, and improving the throughput of the received data compared to recent works, which are based on predefined trajectories of mobile sinks and multi-hop architectures.

There are a plethora of invented classifiers in Machine learning literature, however, there is no optimal classifier in terms of accuracy and time taken to build the trained model, especially with the tremendous development and growth of Big data. Hence, there is still room for improvement. In this paper, we propose a new classification method that is based on the well-known magnetic force. Based on the number of points belonging to a specific class/magnet, the proposed magnetic force (MF) classifier calculates the magnetic force at each discrete point in the feature space. Unknown examples are classified using the magnetic forces recorded in the trained model by various magnets/classes. When compared to existing classifiers, the proposed MF classifier achieves comparable classification accuracy, according to the experimental results utilizing 28 different datasets. More importantly, we found that the proposed MF classifier is significantly faster than all other classifiers tested, particularly when applied to Big datasets and hence could be a viable option for structured Big data classification with some optimization.
