Silane coupling agent (SCA), a kind of organic solvent, was introduced to improve the performance of coral coarse aggregates and enhance the interfacial adhesion between the inorganic coral aggregate and the cement paste of coral concrete. The crushing indicator and water absorption of the coral aggregates over various dipping times were measured, and the slump, interface microhardness, and compressive strength of coral concrete tested. The microscopic appearances of the coral concrete before and after modification were analyzed based on SEM images. The experimental results indicate that SCA can effectively reduce the crushing indicator and water absorption of coral coarse aggregates, and the modification performance becomes better over time. SCA facilitates the generation of chemical forces between the coral aggregates and cement mortars, improves adhesion between the aggregates and mortars, augments the microhardness of the interface, and increases the compressive strength. According to the microscopic appearance of the treated and untreated coral aggregate interfaces, the aggregates and the mortars are in closer combination after modification.

In this paper, an ultrahigh-strength marine concrete containing coral aggregates is developed. Concrete fabricated from marine sources is considered an effective and economical alternative for marine engineering and the construction of remote islands. To protect sea coral ecosystems, the coral aggregates used for construction are only efflorescent coral debris. To achieve the expected mechanical performance from the studied concrete, an optimal mixture design is conducted to determine the optimal proportions of components, in order to optimize the compressive strength. The mechanical properties and the autogenous shrinkage, as well as the heat flow of early hydration reactions, are measured. The hydration products fill up the pores of coral aggregates, endowing our concrete with flowability and self-compacting ability. The phases in the marine concrete are identified via X-ray diffraction analysis. The 28-day compressive and flexural strength of the developed marine concrete achieve 116.76 MPa and 18.24 MPa, respectively. On account of the lower cement content and the internal curing provided by coral aggregates, the volume change resulting from autogenous shrinkage is only 63.11% of that of ordinary reactive powder concrete.

Coral concrete has low cost and convenient materials, making it an excellent raw material for processing. However, its lower strength limits the application of coral concrete. Surface modification is expected to increase the properties of porous coral concrete. In this study, single and compound modification treatments were applied to the surface of a coral aggregate to improve its properties for promoting the mechanical performance of coral concrete. The results showed that the micro-aggregate effect and pozzolanic activity of granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) and the permeability and polycondensation of sodium silicate (SS) could be mutually promoted. The GBFS and SS could effectively fill the pores of the coral aggregate, enhancing the properties of the aggregate, such as density and load-bearing capacity, and reducing the water absorption and crushing index by more than 50%. GBFS and SS could intensify and accelerate the hydration of cement, and generate a large number of hard hydration products at the interfacial transition zone (ITZ), which could strengthen the bonding between the aggregate and mortar, improving the strength of the ITZ. The compressive strength of the coral concrete was significantly increased.

This work investigates the difference in the fragmentation characteristics between the microscopic and macroscopic scales under hypervelocity impact, with the simulations of Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. Under low shock intensity, the model at microscopic scale exhibits good penetration resistance due to the constraint of strength and surface tension. The bullet is finally embedded into the target, rather than forming a typical debris cloud at macroscopic scale. Under high shock intensity, the occurrence of unloading melting of the sample reduces the strength of the material. The material at the microscopic scale has also been completely penetrated. However, the width of the ejecta veil and external bubble of the debris cloud are narrower. In addition, the residual velocity of bullet, crater diameter and expansion angle of the debris cloud at microscopic scale are all smaller than those at macroscopic scale, especially for low-velocity conditions. The difference can be as much as two times. These characteristics indicate that the degree of conversion of kinetic energy to internal energy at the microscopic scale is much higher than that of the macroscopic results. Furthermore, the MD simulation method can further provide details of the physical characteristics at the micro-scale. As the shock intensity increases, the local melting phenomenon becomes more pronounced, accompanied by a decrease in dislocation atoms and a corresponding increase in disordered atoms. In addition, the fraction of disordered atoms is found to increase exponentially with the increasing incident kinetic energy.

The penetration process has attracted increasing attention due to its engineering and scientific value. In this work, we investigate the deformation and damage mechanism about the nanoscale penetration of single-crystal aluminum nanorod with atomistic simulations, where distinct draw ratio (∅) and different incident velocities (up) are considered. The micro deformation processes of no penetration state (within 2 km/s) and complete penetration (above 3 km/s) are both revealed. The high-speed bullet can cause high pressure and temperature at the impacted region, promoting the localized plastic deformation and even solid-liquid phase transformation. It is found that the normalized velocity of nanorod reduces approximately exponentially during penetration (up < 3 km/s), but its residual velocity linearly increased with initial incident velocity. Moreover, the impact crater is also calculated and the corresponding radius is manifested in the linear increase trend with up while inversely proportional to the ∅. Interestingly, the uniform fragmentation is observed instead of the intact spallation, attributed to the relatively thin thickness of the target. It is additionally demonstrated that the number of fragments increases with increasing up and its size distribution shows power law damping nearly. Our findings are expected to provide the atomic insight into the micro penetration phenomena and be helpful to further understand hypervelocity impact related domains.

This paper addresses the strength development of a basalt fiber reinforcedcement-based soil stabilizer. In order to develop eco-friendly high performance stabilizer, cementitious capillary crystalline waterproof material is used as alternative to partially replacesulphate aluminum cement.Driven by the purpose of achieving a high strengthperformancewithout impairing other desirable properties, calcium sulfate, basalt fiber and hydrophilicalumina suspension are selected as additives. By adopting the Response Surface Method, the combinedeffects of the three additives on the unconfined compressive strength of the stabilized soil are analyzed. The basalt fiber can constrain the growth of micro cracks and pores, and thus control their coalescence. Incorporating basalt fiber in combination with calcium sulfate and alumina suspension can not only increasethe strength and hardening of stabilized soil, but also improve other properties, especially for enhancingthe ability of cementing, andfor raising the fracture roughness, and therefore improve the durability. The microstructure changes as a consequence of stabilization process arecharacterized by the scanning electron microscope to analyze the origination of the high strength and durability of stabilized soil. The difference of mineral components between the untreated and stabilized soil samples is identified by the X-ray diffraction analysis.
