The control of climatic conditions where cattle are kept is one of the challenges in the livestock sector regarding the digital automation of the process. (1) Background: The main purpose of this study is to define the optimal foundations for automatic climatic systems in organic and energy-sustainable livestock production. In particular, the following components are suggested: (a) the determination of current deviations and interdependency between factors; (b) an algorithm for defining the possible sources of regulation; (c) the ranking approach of the optimal sequence of possible sources; and (d) ensuring transparency and coordination of the model with organic and energy certificates. (2) Methods: This investigation accumulates information on the characteristics of the main microclimatic parameters and simulates their possible combinations in a livestock building in Poland within 24 h of a spring day. A few indices are considered that signal the impact on the thermal comfort of cattle based on the example of recommended measures for the Angus steer genotype. (3) Results: The proposed transparent algorithm is designed for selecting and ranking potential sources of microclimate control according to three criteria. (4) Conclusions: This paper potentially contributes to determining the most optimal digital algorithm for managing microclimate conditions to ensure acceptable comfort for animals, meeting the requirements of organic certification with minimum costs of production, and switching to sustainable types of energy with consideration of technologies’ efficiency. The algorithm is scalable and adjustable to the individual conditions of any livestock premise with a digitally controlled environment.

The research suggests a production method of insulating composites created from lignocellulosic agricultural biomass with fungal mycelium as a binder agent and offers a deeper investigation of their thermophysical properties. Particularly, the samples were meticulously evaluated for density and thermal conductivity. The function was built on the suggestion by the authors regarding the thermal conductivity-weight ratio indicator. The metric was initially introduced to assess the correlation between these parameters and was also applied to qualitatively evaluate the biocomposite among other commonly used natural insulations. An applied polynomial trend analysis indicated that the most effective densities for the wheat, hemp, and flax, which were 60, 85, and 105 kg·m−3 respectively. It was determined that the optimal density for wheat and hemp composites corresponded to values of 0.28 and 0.20 W−1·kg−1·m4·K of the coefficient, respectively. These values were superior to those revealed in other common natural insulating materials, such as cork, cotton stalks, hempcrete, timber, etc. As a result, the proposed insulating material may offer numerous opportunities for application in industrial settings of civil engineering.

The focus of this study is on the hygrothermal and mechanical properties of the elaborated insulating composite based on flax straw. Flax straw is considered as an agricultural waste of organic origin, which has a high sorption capacity and a low thermal conductivity potential due to its natural porosity. Investigations on sorption moisture, thermal conductivity and mechanical properties under laboratory conditions have allowed us to develop a perspective building material suitable for use in ‘green’ construction, especially in rural areas, due to the relative accessibility of the base component. Liquid glass is proposed as a binder. The optimal composition of the filler and binder, sorption moisture, thermal conductivity and surface mapping of the proposed material were investigated. The thermal conductivity reached a minimum value of 0.0728 W m−1 K−1 at relative humidity of 50% during desorption, which is highly competitive to the values for conventional insulation materials on an organic basis. The binder was visually distributed evenly over the surface according to the SEM analysis. Corresponding to the spectral analysis by chemical elements, Na and SiO2 in total showed 17.69% quantity volume on the composite surface of 2–5 μm in depth. Graphical Abstract

The operational energy efficiency of new buildings in the EU should be at the level of ultra-low or near-zero energy buildings. It is therefore relatively difficult to achieve further energy savings. However, the pre-operational phase—raw material sourcing, manufacturing, transportation, and construction—offers significant energy savings and greenhouse gas reduction opportunities, referred to as embodied energy and equivalent CO2 emissions. Unlike operational energy, no standard or legislative criteria have yet been established for embodied energy. Setting maximum embodied energy values converted to the unit of heated building area, accounting for building shape factor, and differentiating between high-mass and lightweight constructions are proposed. This study illustrates assessing environmental indicators based on building shape, highlighting the necessity of relative assessments over absolute values to favour energy efficiency. It also emphasizes that precise criteria should derive from authentic data collected during the energy certification and building permitting processes. Integrating assessments of embodied energy and operational energy demand facilitates a comprehensive evaluation of buildings’ environmental performance.

Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to critically evaluate the applicability of bio certification in farmers' activity to reduce unfair trading practices in the food supply chain. The secondary purposes are describing the economic reasons of using bio certification and perspectives of using web trading platforms among food producers.Design/methodology/approach: Data collection included face-to-face interviews with 15 Austrian and German farmers who operate on bio food markets as well as a quantitative survey regarding their assessment of unfair trading practices. This study presents both quantitative and qualitative analyses.Findings: Bio certification is more likely unable to eliminate or mitigate unfair trading practices in the food supply chain, however bio certification is able to increase efficiency of farmers together with other web tools.Originality/value: The study is the first to empirically investigate the applicability of bio certifications, its advantages and impact on unfair trading practices in the food supply chain. It focuses on small and medium-sized food producers and farmers. The research also reveals the perspectives of using web trading platforms in farming activity.

This article deals with a mutual comparison of indexable cutting inserts of the CNMG 120408 type from two different manufacturers during the machining of hardened steel AISI 4337 and austenitic stainless steel AISI 316 L. The main goal is to analyse the different wear processes depending on the difference in the manufacturer’s design and also depending on the properties of the different machined materials. The progress of the wear of the main spine of the tool, the types of wear and the service life of the cutting edge were monitored, with the achievement of the critical value VBmax = 300 µm being the standard. In addition to the wear of the inserts, the production of chips was monitored in terms of their shape, average size and number of chips per 100 g of chips produced. In order to understand the relationships arising from the obtained data, an SEM equipped with an elemental analyser was used to analyse the coating layers and the substrate of the unworn inserts and the types of wear and the intensity of the surface damage of the worn inserts. A several-fold difference in the lifetime of the cutting edge was found, both in terms of design and in terms of the selected machined material, while in both cases the cutting edge with Al2O3 and TiCN layers of half thickness achieved a better result in liveness. From the point of view of chip formation, very similar results in shape and average length were observed despite the different designs of chip breakers. Cutting inserts with half the thickness of the coating layers achieved longer cutting edge life in the non-primary material application compared to the target workpiece material. At the same time, it was observed that a thinner coating layer has a positive effect on chip formation in terms of its length and shape.
