Machine Learning (ML) algorithms within a human–computer framework are the leading force in speech emotion recognition (SER). However, few studies explore cross-corpora aspects of SER; this work aims to explore the feasibility and characteristics of a cross-linguistic, cross-gender SER. Three ML classifiers (SVM, Naïve Bayes and MLP) are applied to acoustic features, obtained through a procedure based on Kononenko’s discretization and correlation-based feature selection. The system encompasses five emotions (disgust, fear, happiness, anger and sadness), using the Emofilm database, comprised of short clips of English movies and the respective Italian and Spanish dubbed versions, for a total of 1115 annotated utterances. The results see MLP as the most effective classifier, with accuracies higher than 90% for single-language approaches, while the cross-language classifier still yields accuracies higher than 80%. The results show cross-gender tasks to be more difficult than those involving two languages, suggesting greater differences between emotions expressed by male versus female subjects than between different languages. Four feature domains, namely, RASTA, F0, MFCC and spectral energy, are algorithmically assessed as the most effective, refining existing literature and approaches based on standard sets. To our knowledge, this is one of the first studies encompassing cross-gender and cross-linguistic assessments on SER.

The provided contents by information retrieval (IR) systems can reflect the existing societal biases and stereotypes. Such biases in retrieval results can lead to further establishing and strengthening stereotypes in society and also in the systems. To facilitate the studies of gender bias in the retrieval results of IR systems, we introduce Gender Representation-Bias for Information Retrieval (Grep-BiasIR), a novel thoroughly-audited dataset consisting of 118 bias-sensitive neutral search queries. The set of queries covers a wide range of gender-related topics, for which a biased representation of genders in the search result can be considered as socially problematic. Each query is accompanied with one relevant and one non-relevant document, where the document is also provided in three variations of female, male, and neutral. The dataset is available at https://github.com/KlaraKrieg/GrepBiasIR.

The unprecedented growth of noise pollution over the last decades has raised an always increasing need for developing efficient audio enhancement technologies. Yet, the variety of difficulties related to processing audio sources in-the-wild, such as handling unseen noises or suppressing specific interferences, makes audio enhancement a still open challenge. In this regard, we present (the Neuro-Holistic Audio-eNhancement System), a Python toolkit for in-the-wild audio enhancement that includes functionalities for audio denoising, source separation, and —for the first time in such a toolkit—selective noise suppression. The architecture is specially developed to automatically adapt to different environmental backgrounds and speakers. This is achieved by the use of two identical neural networks comprised of stacks of residual blocks, each conditioned on additional speech- and noise-based recordings through auxiliary sub-networks. Along to a Python API, a command line interface is provided to researchers and developers, both of them carefully documented. Experimental results indicate that achieves great performance w. r. t. existing methods, preserving also the audio quality at a high level; thus, ensuring a reliable usage in real-life application, e. g., for in-the-wild speech processing, which encourages the development of speech-based intelligent technology.
