At the beginning of the 21st century, with the rapid advancement of industrialization and urbanization, production factors such as population, capital, and land between urban and rural areas in China have gradually shifted to non-agricultural fields, the structure and function of rural territorial systems have been reconstructed and transformed therewith. In response to the relatively declining villages, the Chinese government proposed rural revitalization strategy. Taking the human–land relationship as the theoretical basis and functional changes of rural region as the main line, the study analyzes the characteristics of rural reconstruction, interprets the rural transformation mechanism and deconstructs paths of rural revitalization by using the rural reconstruction index, the model of rural transformation measurement and rural spatial transformation effect. The case study shows that: (1) Rural reconstruction in Jianghan Plain is characterized by temporal continuity and spatial imbalance. The periodical changes presents from social-reconstruction-dominated, economic-reconstruction-dominated to spatial reconstruction -dominated. The distribution of high values varied from the U-type to O-type along the main transportation routes, while that of low values alternated between points (hinterlands of the Plain) and lines from spatial viewpoint. (2) The driving mechanism of rural transformation was the coupling effect of the exogenous drivers and endogenous responses. The standardized regression coefficient between the drivers and the changes to rural regional functions is 0.766. The endogenous response is mainly manifested as the negative effect of the rural spatial reconstruction on the territorial agriculture-oriented function. (3) The key path of rural revitalization facilitated the optimization of regional functions through reorganization of the rural elements in Jianghan Plain. It is the strategic choice of rural areas to implement regional function zoning and realize the balance of spatial function. The research results can provide inspiration for theoretical research on rural geography, and provide policy and method support for rural revitalization in case areas.

To achieve a micro-destructive and rapid measurement of the wood density of standing trees, this study investigated the possibility of the unified modeling of multiple tree species, the reliability of the micro drilling resistance method for measuring wood density, the relationship between drilling needle resistance and wood density, and whether moisture content has a significant impact on the model. First, 231 tree cores and drill resistance data were sampled from Pinus massoniana, Cunninghamia lanceolate, and Cryptomeria fortunei. The basic density and moisture content of each core were measured, and the average value of each resistance data record was calculated. Second, the average drill resistance, the natural logarithm of average drill resistance, and absolute moisture content were used as independent variables, while the basic wood density was used as the dependent variable. Third, the total model of the three tree species and sub-model for each tree species were established through a stepwise regression method. Finally, the accuracy of each model was compared and analyzed with that of using the average basic density of each tree species as an estimated density. The estimated accuracy of the total model, sub model, and average wood density modeling data were 90.070%, 93.865%, and 92.195%, respectively. The results revealed that the estimation accuracy of the sub-model was 1.670 percentage points higher than that of the average wood density modeling data, while the estimation accuracy of the total model was 2.125 percentage points lower than that of the average wood density modeling data. Additionally, except for Cryptomeria fortunei, the natural logarithm of drill resistance significantly influenced the wood density model at a significance level of 0.05. Moreover, moisture content significantly affected the total model and sub-models of Pinus massoniana at a significance level of 0.05. The results indicated the feasibility of using the micro-drilling resistance method to measure the wood density of standing trees. Moreover, the relationship between wood density and drill resistance did not follow a linear pattern, and moisture content slightly influenced the drill needle resistance. Furthermore, the establishment of a mathematical model for each tree species was deemed essential. This study provides valuable guidance for measuring the wood density of standing trees through the micro-drilling resistance method.

Radiofrequency adjuvant (RFA) was recently developed to boost influenza vaccination without the safety concerns of chemical adjuvants due to their physical nature. Yet, the action mechanisms of RFA remain largely unknown. Omics techniques offer new opportunities to identify molecular mechanisms of RFA. This study utilized comparative tissue proteomics to explore molecular mechanisms of the physical RFA. Comparison of RFA and chemical adjuvant (Alum, AddaVax, MPL, MPL/Alum)-induced tissue proteome changes identified 14 exclusively induced proteins by RFA, among which heat shock protein (HSP) 70 was selected for further analysis due to its known immune-modulating functions. RFA showed much weakened ability to boost ovalbumin and pandemic influenza vaccination in HSP70 knockout than wild-type mice, hinting crucial roles of HSP70 in RFA effects. This study supports comparative tissue proteomics to be an effective tool to study molecular mechanisms of vaccine adjuvants.

To investigate the spatiotemporal patterns of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) under years of control measures in China, a comprehensive analysis including statistical analysis, geographical analysis, and health impact assessment was conducted on millions of hourly PM2.5 concentrations data during the period of 2017–2020 in six typical major urban agglomerations. During the period of 2017–2020, PM2.5 concentrations in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei urban agglomeration (BTH-UA), Central Plains urban agglomeration (CP-UA), Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration (YRD-UA), Triangle of Central China urban agglomeration (TC-UA), Chengdu–Chongqing urban agglomeration (CY-UA), and Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration (PRD-UA) decreased at a rate of 6.69, 5.57, 5.45, 3.85, 4.66, and 4.1 µg/m3/year, respectively. PM2.5 concentration in BTH-UA decreased by 30.5% over four years, with an annual average of 44.6 µg/m3 in 2020. CP-UA showed the lowest reduction ratio (22.1%) among the six regions, making it the most polluted urban agglomeration. In southern BTH-UA, northeastern CP-UA, and northwestern TC-UA, PM2.5 concentrations with high levels formed a high–high agglomeration, indicating pollution caused by source emission in these areas was high and hard to control. Atmospheric temperature, pressure, and wind speed have important influences on PM2.5 concentrations. RH has a positive correlation with PM2.5 concentration in north China but a negative correlation in south China. We estimated that meteorological conditions can explain 16.7–63.9% of the PM2.5 changes in 129 cities, with an average of 33.4%, indicating other factors including anthropogenic emissions dominated the PM2.5 changes. Among the six urban agglomerations, PM2.5 concentrations in the CP-UA were most influenced by the meteorological change. Benefiting from the reduction in PM2.5 concentration, the total respiratory premature mortalities in six regions decreased by 73.1%, from 2017 to 2020. The CP-UA had the highest respiratory premature mortality in six urban agglomerations. We suggested that the CP-UA needs more attention and stricter pollution control measures.

The rural decline accompanying industrialization and urbanization is a lingering puzzle in human society, while promoting rural restructuring and transformation is considered the primary task of contemporary rural development. It is the historical mission of rural geography research in the new era to scientifically understand the characteristics of contemporary rural development and accurately explain the patterns of rural reconstructing and transformation. In this paper, the Jianghan Plain in China is selected for the case study. Characteristic indexes are selected based on the “structure–function” correlation to interpret rural restructuring. Measurement benchmarks are unified through functional value marketization to interpret rural transformation. Multiple statistical analysis is adopted to identify the action paths and decipher the correlation mechanisms. The case study yields the following findings. (1) The rural restructuring on Jianghan Plain has spatial and temporal differences. Rural restructuring has roughly gone through the social restructuring-led, economic restructuring-led, and spatial restructuring-led evolution stages, showing spatially divergent patterns with high rural comprehensive restructuring index (RRC) areas concentrated around the main traffic arteries and linear low RRC areas along the Yangtze River banks. (2) Rural restructuring and transformation on Jianghan Plain show significant correlation effects. During the study period, the rural transformation magnitude (RTM) continues to increase and shows a spatial map similar to that of rural restructuring, with economic-spatial restructuring-led and economic-social restructuring-led as the main modes of rural transformation. (3) The correlation mechanism of rural restructuring and transformation on Jianghan Plain has characteristics typical of less-developed agricultural areas. The economic restructuring led by agricultural land changes and the social restructuring led by rural population outward migration remain the main paths of rural transformation, and the agricultural function still plays an important role in some rural areas. The quantitative measurement of rural region functions in this study need further optimization, and the refinement and accuracy of regional function accounting needs further exploration. The research results are expected to provide a scientific basis for stimulating rural development and promoting sustainable rural development in contemporary developing countries.

To improve the estimation accuracy of wood density and study the linear correlation between drill feed resistance and wood density, a new micro drill instrument prototype that can simultaneously measure the rotation resistance and feed resistance of the drill needle was designed. The test tree species included hard and soft broad-leaved trees and coniferous trees, and the absolute dry density of each wood sample was measured. The drill resistance data were tested by our newly proposed prototype and a Resistograph 650-SC, and four linear models were established to define the relation between drill resistance and the absolute dry density of the wood. The results showed that (1) the statistical indicators of each model for our proposed prototype were better than the corresponding indicators of the Resistograph 650-SC for three of the four species tested; (2) the coefficient of determination of the linear regression model between the feed resistance of our proposed prototype and the absolute dry density of wood was 0.946; and (3) the statistical indicators of the model that included rotation resistance and feed resistance were better than those of the model that only including rotation resistance. Although the proposed prototype produced a competitive level of accuracy and explicitly demonstrated that including feed resistance improved wood density measurement accuracy, the prototype should be considered a first iteration as further hardware design changes and in-forest performance assessments across wider diverse set of test species are required before a conclusive evaluation can be rendered.
