Plain polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibres and novel polyvinyl alcohol benzene tetracarboxylate nanofibres incorporated with strontium, lanthanum and antimony ((PVA/Sr-TBC), (PVA/La-TBC) and (PVA/Sb-TBC)), respectively, where TBC is benzene 1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylate adsorbents, were fabricated by electrospinning. The as-prepared electrospun nanofibres were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Only plain PVA nanofibres followed the Freundlich isotherm with a correlation coefficient of 0.9814, while novel nanofibres (PVA/Sb-TBC, PVA/Sr-TBC and PVA/La-TBC) followed the Langmuir isotherm with correlation coefficients of 0.9999, 0.9994 and 0.9947, respectively. The sorption process of all nanofibres followed a pseudo second-order kinetic model. Adsorption capacity of novel nanofibres was twofold and more compared to that of plain PVA nanofibres. The thermodynamic studies: apparent enthalpy (ΔH°) and entropy (ΔS°), showed that the adsorption of Pb(II) onto nanofibres was spontaneous and exothermic. The novel nanofibres exhibited higher potential removal of Pb(II) ions than plain PVA nanofibres. Ubiquitous cations adsorption test was also investigated and studied.

This research work reports on pure and acid-treated fennel seed biomaterials for the removal of metal ions of copper Cu(II), lead Pb(II), and methylene blue (MB) dye from aqueous solution by batch adsorption. Pure fennel seeds were labelled as PFS; nitric and sulphuric acid-treated seeds were designated as NAFS and SAFS, respectively. The adsorbents were characterised by SEM, EDX, FTIR, XRD, and BET. The SEM images revealed that the surface of the adsorbents was porous. However, physicochemical characterization further revealed that BET surface area, pore size, and pore width increased for NAFS and SAFS compared to PFS. FTIR results revealed that the peaks for cellulose −COC and −OH decreased considerably for NAFS and SAFS; this indicated that cellulose was hydrolyzed during acid treatment. Adsorption data showed that all biomaterials had a higher affinity for MB dye more than Pb(II) and Cu(II) metal ions. The maximum adsorption capacities onto PFS were 6.834, 4.179, and 2.902 mg/g and onto NAFS are 15.28, 14.44, and 4.475 mg/g, while those onto SAFS are 19.81, 18.79 and 6.707 mg/g respective for MB dye, Pb(II), and Cu(II) ions. Postadsorption analysis revealed that adsorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II) was controlled mainly by the electrostatic attraction, while that of MB was synergistic of electrostatic attraction, π- π interaction, and hydrogen bond. It was found that the uptake processes of MB dye onto all adsorbents fitted Freundlich while both cations were described by Langmuir model. The thermodynamic parameters [ ] o and [ ] o indicated the endothermic nature and spontaneity of the processes, respectively.

Toxins in water, such as metal ions and dyes, have become a global challenge to humanity by causing several serious illnesses. Removal of these toxins from water is needed for human health and environmental concerns. This work investigated the use of hemp seeds as an environmentally friendly adsorbent for applications in water treatment. Pristine hemp seeds (PHSs) were carbonized at 500 and 700 °C to obtain carbon-based hemp seeds (CHS-500 and CHS-700 for the removal of cadmium and methylene blue. The morphological and functional groups of the carbonized adsorbents and pristine hemp seeds were determined by SEM and FTIR. Isotherm studies showed that the Langmuir model best described the adsorption process based on homogenous surfaces. The maximum adsorption capacities were obtained with CHS-700 with a 36.88 and 52.61 mg/g uptake of cadmium and methylene blue, respectively. The effect of contact time showed that the sorption process rate was rapid initially, followed by a slower increment due to the saturation of active sites. ΔS° values were positive, demonstrating the increased randomness and degree of freedom of cadmium and methylene blue in water. The adsorption trends for cadmium and methylene blue by CHS-500 and CHS-700 increased as the temperature rose; a decrease was observed for adsorption by PHSs. This result suggests that the adsorption was endothermic for CHS-500 and CHS-700 and exothermic for PHSs. The pseudo-second-order model better described the uptake of both pollutants by the adsorbents. This research illustrates the great potential of carbon-based hemp seeds in removing cadmium and methylene blue dye from water.
