Soil acidity is a serious problem in agricultural lands as it directly affects the soil, crop production, and human health. Soil acidification in agricultural lands occurs due to the release of protons (H+) from the transforming reactions of various carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur-containing compounds. The use of biochar (BC) has emerged as an excellent tool to manage soil acidity owing to its alkaline nature and its appreciable ability to improve the soil’s physical, chemical, and biological properties. The application of BC to acidic soils improves soil pH, soil organic matter (SOM), cation exchange capacity (CEC), nutrient uptake, microbial activity and diversity, and enzyme activities which mitigate the adverse impacts of acidity on plants. Further, BC application also reduce the concentration of H+and Al3+ions and other toxic metals which mitigate the soil acidity and supports plant growth. Similarly, soil salinity (SS) is also a serious concern across the globe and it has a direct impact on global production and food security. Due to its appreciable liming potential BC is also an important amendment to mitigate the adverse impacts of SS. The addition of BC to saline soils improves nutrient homeostasis, nutrient uptake, SOM, CEC, soil microbial activity, enzymatic activity, and water uptake and reduces the accumulation of toxic ions sodium (Na+and chloride (Cl-). All these BC-mediated changes support plant growth by improving antioxidant activity, photosynthesis efficiency, stomata working, and decrease oxidative damage in plants. Thus, in the present review, we discussed the various mechanisms through which BC improves the soil properties and microbial and enzymatic activities to counter acidity and salinity problems. The present review will increase the existing knowledge about the role of BC to mitigate soil acidity and salinity problems. This will also provide new suggestions to readers on how this knowledge can be used to ameliorate acidic and saline soils.

Salinity stress (SS) is a serious abiotic stress and a major constraint to agricultural productivity across the globe. High SS negatively affects plant growth and yield by altering soil physio-chemical properties and plant physiological, biochemical, and molecular processes. The application of micronutrients is considered an important practice to mitigate the adverse effects of SS. Zinc (Zn) is an important nutrient that plays an imperative role in plant growth, and it could also help alleviate the effects of salt stress. Zn application improves seed germination, seedling growth, water uptake, plant water relations, nutrient uptake, and nutrient homeostasis, therefore improving plant performance and saline conditions. Zn application also protects the photosynthetic apparatus from salinity-induced oxidative stress and improves stomata movement, chlorophyll synthesis, carbon fixation, and osmolytes and hormone accumulation. Moreover, Zn application also increases the synthesis of secondary metabolites and the expression of stress responsive genes and stimulates antioxidant activities to counter the toxic effects of salt stress. Therefore, to better understand the role of Zn in plants under SS, we have discussed the various mechanisms by which Zn induces salinity tolerance in plants. We have also identified diverse research gaps that must be filled in future research programs. The present review article will fill the knowledge gaps on the role of Zn in mitigating salinity stress. This review will also help readers to learn more about the role of Zn and will provide new suggestions on how this knowledge can be used to develop salt tolerance in plants by using Zn.

Understanding the risks of planktonic algal proliferation and its environmental causes is crucial for protecting water quality and controlling ecological risks. Reservoirs, due to the characteristics of slow flow rates and long hydraulic retention times, are more prone to eutrophication and algal proliferation. Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) serves as an indicator of planktonic algal biomass. Exploring the intricate interactions and driving mechanisms between Chl-a and the water environment, and the potential risks of algal blooms, is crucial for ensuring the ecological safety of reservoirs and the health of water users. This study focused on the Danjiangkou Reservoir (DJKR), the core water source of the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project of China (MRSNWDPC). The multivariate statistical methods and structural equation modeling were used to explore the relationships between chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) contents and water quality factors and understand the driving mechanisms affecting Chl-a variations. The Copula function and Bayesian theory were combined to analyze the risk of changes in Chl-a concentrations at Taocha (TC) station, which is the core water source intake point of the MRSNWDPC. The results showed that the factors driving planktonic algal proliferation were spatially heterogeneous. The main factors affecting Chl-a concentrations in Dan Reservoir (DR) were water physicochemical factors (water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH value, and turbidity) with a total contribution rate of 60.18%, whereas those in Han Reservoir (HR) were nutrient factors (total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and ammonia nitrogen) with a total contribution rate of 73.58%. In TC, the main factors were water physicochemical factors (turbidity, pH, and water temperature) and nutrient factors (total phosphorus) with total contribution rates of 39.76% and 45.78%, respectively. When Chl-a concentrations in other areas of the DJKR ranged from the minimum to the uppermost quartile, the probabilities that Chl-a concentrations at the TC station exceeded 3.4 μg/L (the benchmark value of Chl-a for lakes in the central-eastern lake area of China) owing to the influence of these areas were all less than 10%. Thus, the risk of planktonic algal proliferation at the MRSNWDPC intake point is low. This study developed an integrated framework to investigate spatiotemporal changes in algal proliferation and their driving factors in reservoirs, which can be used to support water quality management in mega hydro projects.

In this study, changes in abiotic environmental factors were analyzed based on measured data from Dawangtan Reservoir in Nanning City during 2021–2022. The Carlson Integrated Trophic State Index method was applied to evaluate water quality and eutrophication in the reservoir, considering both exogenous inputs and internal water quality conditions. Additionally, by investigating water quality and biological factors (zooplankton and fish) in the reservoir, this study identified the main drivers influencing phytoplankton outbreaks in Dawangtan Reservoir through redundancy analysis (RDA) and Pearson correlation analysis. The results showed that the combined trophic state index of the reservoir varied between 29.2 and 56.5 throughout the year, with each water quality indicator performing worse during the summer months when temperatures were higher. There was a positive correlation between zooplankton biomass and phytoplankton biomass, and the increase in the proportion of phytophagous fish contributed to the reduction in phytoplankton. The redundancy analysis revealed that the distribution of phytoplankton species was significantly correlated with total phosphorus (TP), pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and chlorophyll a (Chl-a), with different phytoplankton species responding variably to these environmental factors. Finally, a multiple stepwise regression analysis was used to construct the optimal response equation between Chl-a concentration and environmental factors. The results indicated that pH, Secchi disk (SD), DO, and biological oxygen demand (BOD) were the main factors affecting Chl-a concentration. Therefore, the outcomes of abiotic environmental factors and lake biological resources should be considered in the restoration of eutrophic lakes to achieve the desired restoration effect.

Understanding the changes in regional droughts is important for promoting overall sustainable development. However, the spatiotemporal dynamics of soil droughts in Guangxi under the background of global warming and regional vegetation restoration have not been studied extensively, and the potential causes are scarcely understood. Here, using TerraClimate soil moisture data, we constructed a monthly standardized soil moisture index (SSMI), analyzed the seasonal and annual spatiotemporal distribution of droughts from the perspective of soil moisture, and studied past soil drought events in Guangxi. Migration methods of drought centroid, trend analysis, and principal component decomposition were used. In the interannual dynamics, the overall SSMI increased, indicating that the soil drought situation was gradually alleviated in Guangxi. Further, the frequency of extreme and severe droughts decreased with time, mainly in autumn and winter. During early drought stages, the migration path was short, which extended as the droughts progressed. Ocean temperature and soil moisture were strongly correlated, indicating that abnormal ocean surface temperature may drive soil moisture. This study provides scientific guidance for the early warning, prevention, and mitigation of losses associated with soil droughts in Guangxi and serves as valuable reference for understanding the impacts of large-scale climate anomalies on soil moisture.
