Since Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) targets are full of coherent speckle noise, the traditional deep learning models are difficult to effectively extract key features of the targets and share high computational complexity. To solve the problem, an effective lightweight Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model incorporating transfer learning is proposed for better handling SAR targets recognition tasks. In this work, firstly we propose the Atrous-Inception module, which combines both atrous convolution and inception module to obtain rich global receptive fields, while strictly controlling the parameter amount and realizing lightweight network architecture. Secondly, the transfer learning strategy is used to effectively transfer the prior knowledge of the optical, non-optical, hybrid optical and non-optical domains to the SAR target recognition tasks, thereby improving the model’s recognition performance on small sample SAR target datasets. Finally, the model constructed in this paper is verified to be 97.97% on ten types of MSTAR datasets under standard operating conditions, reaching a mainstream target recognition rate. Meanwhile, the method presented in this paper shows strong robustness and generalization performance on a small number of randomly sampled SAR target datasets.

Face recognition (FR) with single sample per person (SSPP) is a challenge in computer vision. Since there is only one sample to be trained, it makes facial variation such as pose, illumination, and disguise difficult to be predicted. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes a scheme combined traditional and deep learning (TDL) method to process the task. First, it proposes an expanding sample method based on traditional approach. Compared with other expanding sample methods, the method can be used easily and conveniently. Besides, it can generate samples such as disguise, expression, and mixed variation. Second, it uses transfer learning and introduces a well-trained deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) model and then selects some expanding samples to fine-tune the DCNN model. Third, the fine-tuned model is used to implement experiment. Experimental results on AR face database, Extend Yale B face database, FERET face database, and LFW database demonstrate that TDL achieves the state-of-the-art performance in SSPP FR.

Facial beauty prediction (FBP) is an important and challenging problem in the fields of computer vision and machine learning. Not only it is easily prone to overfitting due to the lack of large-scale and effective data, but also difficult to quickly build robust and effective facial beauty evaluation models because of the variability of facial appearance and the complexity of human perception. Transfer Learning can be able to reduce the dependence on large amounts of data as well as avoid overfitting problems. Broad learning system (BLS) can be capable of quickly completing models building and training. For this purpose, Transfer Learning was fused with BLS for FBP in this paper. Firstly, a feature extractor is constructed by way of CNNs models based on transfer learning for facial feature extraction, in which EfficientNets are used in this paper, and the fused features of facial beauty extracted are transferred to BLS for FBP, called E-BLS. Secondly, on the basis of E-BLS, a connection layer is designed to connect the feature extractor and BLS, called ER-BLS. Finally, experimental results show that, compared with the previous BLS and CNNs methods existed, the accuracy of FBP was improved by E-BLS and ER-BLS, demonstrating the effectiveness and superiority of the method presented, which can also be widely used in pattern recognition, object detection and image classification.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Automatic Target Recognition (ATR), most algorithms of which have employed and relied on sufficient training samples to receive a strong discriminative classification model, has remained a challenging task in recent years, among which the challenge of SAR data acquisition and further insight into the intuitive features of SAR images are the main concerns. In this paper, a deep transferred multi-level feature fusion attention network with dual optimized loss, called a multi-level feature attention Synthetic Aperture Radar network (MFFA-SARNET), is proposed to settle the problem of small samples in SAR ATR tasks. Firstly, a multi-level feature attention (MFFA) network is established to learn more discriminative features from SAR images with a fusion method, followed by alleviating the impact of background features on images with the following attention module that focuses more on the target features. Secondly, a novel dual optimized loss is incorporated to further optimize the classification network, which enhances the robust and discriminative learning power of features. Thirdly, transfer learning is utilized to validate the variances and small-sample classification tasks. Extensive experiments conducted on a public database with three different configurations consistently demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed network, and the significant improvements yielded to surpass those of the state-of-the-art methods under small-sample conditions.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar takes the advantages of high degrees of freedom for beam pattern design and waveform optimization, because each antenna in centralized MIMO radar system can transmit different signal waveforms. When continuous band is divided into several pieces, sparse frequency radar waveforms play an important role due to the special pattern of the sparse spectrum. In this paper, we start from the covariance matrix of the transmitted waveform and extend the concept of sparse frequency design to the study of MIMO radar beam pattern. With this idea in mind, we first solve the problem of semidefinite constraint by optimization tools and get the desired covariance matrix of the ideal beam pattern. Then, we use the acquired covariance matrix and generalize the objective function by adding the constraint of both constant modulus of the signals and corresponding spectrum. Finally, we solve the objective function by the cyclic algorithm and obtain the sparse frequency MIMO radar waveforms with desired beam pattern. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of this method.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing images used for semantic segmentation possess distinct features compared to urban street scene images, including high resolution and a complex background. Spatial information plays a pivotal role in enhancing the performance of semantic segmentation for high-resolution images. The dual-branch architecture for semantic segmentation incorporates supplementary branches to capture spatial information. However, prior research on dual-branch semantic segmentation neglected the interaction between the contextual and spatial branches, leading to suboptimal model performance. In this discourse, the paper introduces a dual-branch semantic segmentation framework. This design advances the system's understanding of spatial information while facilitating inter-branch learning through two key modules. Initially, the spatial calibration feature extraction module employs frequency domain processing and learning tactics distinct from the contextual approach to generate image features under varied noise conditions. Calibration is achieved by generating features from diverse angles. Subsequently, the spatially-guided loss function directs the acquisition of spatial information for the spatial branch by condensing the deep image characteristics for the context branch. To assess the generalization capacity of the proposed method, experiments will be conducted on three different datasets. The proposed method's modules will be integrated into three representative dual-branch networks, allowing assessment of the generalization capacity of the key DBCG components. Empirical evidence demonstrates that this approach is highly effective, significantly surpassing the performance of the baseline network.
