Speech technologies have been developed for decades as a typical signal processing area, while the last decade has brought a huge progress based on new machine learning paradigms. Owing not only to their intrinsic complexity but also to their relation with cognitive sciences, speech technologies are now viewed as a prime example of interdisciplinary knowledge area. This review article on speech signal analysis and processing, corresponding machine learning algorithms, and applied computational intelligence aims to give an insight into several fields, covering speech production and auditory perception, cognitive aspects of speech communication and language understanding, both speech recognition and text-to-speech synthesis in more details, and consequently the main directions in development of spoken dialogue systems. Additionally, the article discusses the concepts and recent advances in speech signal compression, coding, and transmission, including cognitive speech coding. To conclude, the main intention of this article is to highlight recent achievements and challenges based on new machine learning paradigms that, over the last decade, had an immense impact in the field of speech signal processing.

Microfluidic technology, which involves the manipulation of fluids in microchannels, faces challenges in channel design and performance optimization due to its complex, multi-parameter nature. Traditional design and optimization approaches usually rely on time-consuming numerical simulations, or on trial-and-error methods, which entail high costs associated with experimental evaluations. Additionally, commonly used optimization methods require many numerical simulations, and to avoid excessive computation time, they approximate simulation results with faster surrogate models. Alternatively, machine learning (ML) is becoming increasingly significant in microfluidics and technology in general, enabling advancements in data analysis, automation, and system optimization. Among ML methods, Bayesian optimization (BO) stands out by systematically exploring the design space, usually using Gaussian processes (GP) to model the objective function and guide the search for optimal designs. In this paper, we demonstrate the application of BO in the design optimization of the microfluidic systems, by enhancing the mixing performance of a micromixer with parallelogram barriers and a Tesla micromixer modified with parallelogram barriers. Micromixer models were made using Comsol Multiphysics software® and their geometric parameters were optimized using BO. The presented approach minimizes the number of required simulations to reach the optimal design, thus eliminating the need for developing a separate surrogate model for approximation of the simulation results. The results showed the effectiveness of using BO for design optimization, both in terms of the execution speed and reaching the optimum of the objective function. The optimal geometries for efficient mixing were achieved at least an order of magnitude faster compared to state-of-the-art optimization methods for microfluidic design. In addition, the presented approach can be widely applied to other microfluidic devices, such as droplet generators, particle separators, etc.

Robotic systems for research and development of factory automation are complex and unavailable for broad deployment in robotic laboratory settings. The usual robotic factory automation setup consists of series of sensors, robotic arms and mobile robots integrated and orchestrated by a central information system. Cloud-based integration has been gaining traction in recent years. In order to build such a system in a laboratory environment, there are several practical challenges that have to be resolved to come to a point when such a system can become operational. In this paper, we present the development of one such system composed of (i) a cloud-based system built on top of open platform for innovation in logistics, (ii) a prototyped mobile robot with a forklift to manipulate pallets in a “factory” floor, and (iii) industrial robot ABB IRB 140 with a customized gripper and various sensors. A mobile robot is designed as an autonomous four Mecanum wheels system with on-board LiDAR and RGB-D sensor for simultaneous localization and mapping. The paper shows a use case of the overall system and highlights the advantages of having a laboratory setting with real robots for the research of factory automation in a laboratory environment. Moreover, the proposed solution could be scaled and replicated in real factory automation applications.

This paper reports a spoken natural language dialogue system that manages the interaction between the user and the industrial robot ABB IRB 140. To the extent that the dialogue system is multimodal, it uses three communication modalities: (i) spoken language (automatic speech recognition and text-to-speech synthesis), (ii) visual recognition of the figures and determination of their positions, and (iii) typed text. To the extent that the dialogue system is adaptive, it takes the verbal and spatial contexts into account in order to adapt its dialogue behavior and to process spontaneously formulated user commands of different syntactic forms without explicit syntactic expectations. The industrial robot is slightly modified and enabled to manipulate over graphical figures, following the instructions of the dialogue system.

The significance of distributed learning and inference algorithms in Internet of Things (IoT) network is growing since they flexibly distribute computation load between IoT devices and the infrastructure, enhance data privacy, and minimize latency. However, a notable challenge stems from the influence of communication channel conditions on their performance. In this work, we introduce COMSPLIT: a novel communication-aware design for split learning (SL) and inference paradigm tailored to processing time series data in IoT networks. COMSPLIT provides a versatile framework for deploying adaptable SL in IoT networks affected by diverse channel conditions. In conjunction with the integration of an early-exit strategy, and addressing IoT scenarios containing devices with heterogeneous computational capabilities, COMSPLIT represents a comprehensive design solution for communication-aware SL in IoT networks. Numerical results show superior performance of COMSPLIT compared to vanilla SL approaches (that assume ideal communication channel), demonstrating its ability to offer both design simplicity and adaptability to different channel conditions.
