The development of mechanically robust super-lubrication hydrogel materials with sustained lubricity at high contact pressures is challenging. In this work, inspired by the durable lubricity feature of the earthworm epidermis, a multilevel structural super-lubrication hydrogel (MS-SLH) system, the so-called lubricant self-pumping hydrogel, is developed. The MS-SLH system is manufactured by chemically dissociating a double network hydrogel to generate robust and wrinkled lubrication layer, and then laser etching was used to generate cylindrical texture pores as gland-like pockets for storing lubricants. The surface of MS-SLH system shows ultrafast hydration characteristics and reversible pore-closing and pore-opening behavior. The current MS-SLH system shows excellent SL features, as follows: a very low COF (~0.0079) at high contact pressure condition (P: 11.32 MPa); a stable and robust SL lifespan (COF: ~0.0028, P: 8.48 MPa, 100k cylces) without surface wear; and a sustained lubricity period (3700 cycles) with limited lubricant volume (5 μL) in air. The robust and sustained lubricity of the MS-SLH system is likely attributed to the synergy from the strong electrostatic repulsion effect at the sliding interface, the robust but compliant modulus of the dissociation lubrication layer, and the self-pumping lubricant release from the gland-like pocket of the texture pores during the dynamic shearing process. The demonstration experiments based on self-built equipments intuitively exhibit durable SL behavior of MS-SLH system. This work provides an easy strategy for the large-scale manufacture of high-performance water-lubrication coatings suitable for high-end medical devices or moving parts.

Surface wettability plays a significant role in reducing solid-liquid frictional resistance, especially the superhydrophilic/hydrophilic interface because of its excellent thermodynamic stability. In this work, poly(acrylic acid)-poly(acrylamide) (PAA–PAM) hydrogel coatings with different thicknesses were prepared in situ by polydopamine (PDA)-UV assisted surface catalytically initiated radical polymerization. Fluid drag reduction performance of hydrogel surface was measured using a rotational rheometer by the plate-plate mode. The experimental results showed that the average drag reduction of hydrogel surface could reach up to about 56% in Couette flow, which was mainly due to the interfacial polymerization phenomenon that enhanced the ability of hydration layer to delay the momentum dissipation between fluid layers and the diffusion behavior of surface. The proposed drag reduction mechanism of hydrogel surface was expected to shed new light on hydrogel-liquid interface interaction and provide a new way for the development of steady-state drag reduction methods.

Miniaturization has increasingly become a crucial prerequisite in various magnetorheological (MR) drive application scenarios. Owing to their high controllability and low response time, MR rotary actuators are developed for numerous feasible actuation solutions. However, the incident low degradation efficiency in the miniaturization limits the application of MR rotary actuators. In addition to torque capacity, structural simplification and easy machinability are also essential for miniaturization. In this study, a novel lamellar excitation structure (LES), which is interleaved with induction coils and ring-shaped iron cores, is proposed to improve the comprehensive performance of a miniature MR rotary actuator. The optimisation of the magnetic field distribution is realised by adopting an equivalent magnetic modelling method. The miniature MR actuator is incorporated into a turbine generator to evaluate the torque capability of the proposed LES-incorporated MR actuator via a kinematic model of the rotating shaft. The LES-incorporated MR rotary actuator demonstrates more favourable deceleration efficiency and torque capacity than conventional MR rotary actuators. The speed reduction per unit power Δ n / P can be increased by 500% at most. The torque enhancement ratio-to-volume ratio value of LES is approximately 80 times higher than that of other optimised structures. We believe that this study is significant in improving the comprehensive performance of miniature MR rotary actuators, expanding the applications of MR actuators in miniaturised scenarios.

In order to investigate the feasibility of using rice critical nitrogen concentration as a nitrogen nutrition diagnosis index, a two-year positioning field gradient experiment using four rice varieties and four nitrogen levels (0, 75, 150, 225 kg·ha–1 for early rice; 0, 90, 180, 270 kg·ha–1 for late rice) was conducted for early and late rice. The critical dilution curves (Nc%) of the double-cropped rice based on leaf dry matter (LDM) were constructed and verified using the field data. Two critical nitrogen dilution curves and nitrogen nutrition indexes (NNI) of rice LDM were constructed for early rice [Nc% = 2.66LDM−0.79, R2 = 0.88, NNI ranged between 0.29–1.74, and the average normalized root mean square error (n-RMSE = 19.35%)] and late rice [Nc% = 7.46LDM−1.42, R2 = 0.91, NNI was between 0.55–1.53, and the average (n-RMSE = 15.14%)]. The relationship between NNI and relative yield was a quadratic polynomial equation and suggested that the optimum nitrogen application rate for early rice was sightly smaller than 150 kg·ha–1, and that for late rice was about 180 kg·ha-1. The developed critical nitrogen concentration dilution curves, based on leaf dry matter, were able to diagnose nitrogen nutrition in the double-cropped rice region.
