In this article, wave propagation characteristics of a size-dependent graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) reinforced composite cylindrical nanoshell coupled with piezoelectric actuator (PIAC) and surrounded with viscoelastic foundation is presented. The effects of small scale are analyzed based on nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT) which is an accurate theory employing exact length scale parameter and nonlocal constant. The governing equations of the GNP composite cylindrical nanoshell coupled with PIAC have been evolved using Hamilton’s principle and solved with assistance of the analytical method. For the first time in the current study, wave propagation electrical behavior of a GNP composite cylindrical nanoshell coupled with PIAC based on NSGT is examined. The results show that, by decreasing the PIAC thickness, extremum values of phase velocity occur in the lower values of the wave number. Another important result is that, by increasing GPL%, the effects of PIAC thickness on the phase velocity decrease. Finally, influence of PIAC thickness, wave number, applied voltage, and different GPL distribution patterns on phase velocity is investigated using mentioned continuum mechanics theory. Useful suggestion of this research is that for designing of a nanostructure coupled with PIAC attention should be given to PIAC thickness and applied voltage, simultaneously. The outputs of the current study can be used in the structural health monitoring and ultrasonic inspection techniques.

In this study, buckling and vibrational characteristics of a nanoshell reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets under uniform axial load are investigated. The material properties of the piece-wise graphene-reinforced composites (GPLRCs) are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction of a nanoshell and are estimated using a nanomechanical model. The effects of the small scale are analyzed based on nonlocal stress–strain gradient theory (NSGT). The governing equations and boundary conditions (BCs) are developed using Hamilton’s principle and are solved with assistance of the generalized differential quadrature method. The novelty of the current study is the consideration of GPLRC and size effect as well as satisfying various boundary conditions implemented on the proposed model using NSGT. The results show that, nonlocal parameter, graphene platelet (GPL) distribution pattern, length scale parameter, number of layers, and GPL weight function have significant influence on the buckling and natural frequency of the GPLRC nanoshell. Another significant result is that nonlocal parameter does not have any effect on the buckling load for each BC. The results of the current study are useful for design of the nanoactuators and nanosensors.

This paper presents a novel implementation of Frequency Steerable Acoustic Transducers (FSATs) for guided waves (GWs) inspections. Unlike the conventional phased array systems, which demand a large number of transducers and complex wiring, FSATs benefit from inherent directional properties for generation and sensing ultrasonic guided waves, resulting in significant hardware simplification and cost reductions for GWs-based systems. The FSATs exploit the frequency-dependent spatial filtering effect, leading to a direct relationship between the direction of propagation and the frequency content of the transmitted signal. The proposed Piezoceramic FSAT is fabricated through patterning the spiral electrodes on a Piezoelectric (PZT) plate bonded on a supporting aluminum plate. In light of the need to investigate the influence of the generated stiffness caused by the PZT plate on the coupling behavior between the FSAT and the aluminum plate, Finite Element (FE) simulations were carried out. Furthermore, experimental validations were conducted using a Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (SLDV) to highlight the directional capabilities of such devices. The results show that the generation of directional GWs in a host structure is substantially improved thanks to the high actuation strength of Piezoceramic materials employed in the proposed transducer.

The estimation of Direction of Arrival (DoA) of guided ultrasonic waves is an important task in many Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) applications. The aim is to locate sources of elastic waves which can be generated by impacts or defects in the inspected structures. In this paper, the array geometry and the shape of the piezo-sensors are designed to optimize the DoA estimation on a pre-defined angular sector, from acquisitions affected by noise and interference. In the proposed approach, the DoA of a wave generated by a single source is considered as a random variable that is uniformly distributed in a given range. The wave velocity is assumed to be unknown and the DoA estimation is performed by measuring the Differences in Time of Arrival (DToAs) of wavefronts impinging on the sensors. The optimization procedure of sensors positioning is based on the computation of the DoA and wave velocity parameters Cramér-Rao Matrix Bound (CRMB) with a Bayesian approach. An efficient DoA estimator is found based on the DToAs Gauss-Markov estimator for a three sensors array. Moreover, a novel directive sensor for guided waves is introduced to cancel out undesired Acoustic Sources impinging from DoAs out of the given angles range. Numerical results show the capability to filter directional interference of the novel sensor and a considerably improved DoA estimation performance provided by the optimized sensor cluster in the pre-defined angular sector, as compared to conventional approaches.
