A nonstandard shape of the gamma resonance spectra of nanoparticles in the form of inverted five-step pedestal has been predicted, observed, and analytically described. This shape corresponds to the limit of high temperatures and slow relaxation of the homogeneous magnetization of single-domain particles with axial magnetic anisotropy. To describe the Mössbauer spectra of the ensemble of chaotically oriented nanoparticles in a magnetic field, a continual magnetic-dynamics model has been developed in the limit of slow relaxation. This model adequately describes the polarization effects observed in the experimental absorption spectra. The revealed features significantly expand the methodical capabilities of Mössbauer spectroscopy for the diagnostics of magnetic nanomaterials.

A theory is developed for the Mössbauer absorption spectra of an ensemble of single-domain particles in a magnetic field. This theory is based on the generalization of a relaxation model with a quantummechanical description of the stationary states of a particle and on the formalism of Liouville operators for describing the hyperfine interaction for a hyperfine field changing in both the magnitude and direction for various stationary states. The general scheme of calculating relaxation Mössbauer spectra in terms of a standard stochastic approach is substantially optimized using operations with block matrices and a unique tridiagonalization of high-rank non-Hermitian matrices with a simple nonorthogonal transformation in the calculation procedure. The resulting model can easily be implemented on a personal computer. It considers the physical mechanisms of formation of a hyperfine structure in a spectrum of nanoparticles in a real situation and self-consistently describes the qualitative features of the nontrivial evolution of spectra with the temperature and the magnetic-field direction and strength, which has been detected in 57Fe nucleus experiments performed on magnetic nanoparticles for half a century.

A multi-level stochastic model taking into account the magnetic anisotropy, precession and diffusion of the uniform magnetization of single-domain particles is developed in order to describe the Mössbauer absorption spectra of an ensemble of magnetic nanoparticles in the presence of quadrupolar hyperfine interaction with an arbitrary orientation of its principal axes. This model allows one to take into account physical mechanisms for forming the hyperfine structure in a real situation and can be easily realized even on a personal computer. In particular, now one can numerically describe qualitative features of temperature evolution of the Mössbauer spectral shape from a 'symmetric' magnetic sextet to a quadrupolar doublet of lines, which has been observed in a large number of experimental spectra of (57)Fe nuclei in magnetic nanoparticles for almost half a century.

Fe1-xCox nanowires are obtained by electrochemical deposition into the pores of track-etched membranes. The characteristics of the growth process that allow controlling the length and aspect ratio of the nanowires are established. The elemental composition and magnetic properties of the nanowires depend on the diameter of the track-etched pores, which varies from 30 to 200 nm, and the electrochemical potential U (650–850 mV), which determines the nanowire growth rate. According to the results of elemental analysis and the Mössbauer spectroscopy data, the Co content in Fe1-xCox lies in the range of x=0.20−0.25. It is found that the orientation of the magnetic moment of Fe–Co nanoparticles in the wires depends both on the track pore size d and on the nanowire growth rate. Thus, the magnetic moments in nanowires grown in 50-nm-diameter pores are oriented within 0°–40° with respect to the nanowire axis. The magnetic properties of the nanowires are explained in the framework of a theoretical model describing the magnetic dynamics of nanocomposites, which was extended to include the relaxation of the magnetization vector and to take into account interaction between the particles. The key physical parameters important for the technological applications of the nanowires are determined, their dependence on the nanowire growth conditions is traced, and the possibility of controlling them is established.

In order to develop a model of magnetic dynamics for quantitative analysis of the temperature dependences of the magnetization of an ensemble of nanoparticles in various regimes of the preliminary cooling of a sample, the phenomenological Stoner-Wohlfarth model is generalized for single-domain particles to the case of a more accurate description of relaxation processes in a magnetic system. Calculations in this model and their detailed analysis exhibit a number of qualitative features, including the asymptotic behavior of magnetization and susceptibility in the high-temperature limit, which is different from the Langevin limit for ideal superparamagnetic particles.

Nanosystems for targeted delivery and remote-controlled release of therapeutic agents has become a top priority in pharmaceutical science and drug development in recent decades. Application of a low frequency magnetic field (LFMF) as an external stimulus opens up opportunities to trigger release of the encapsulated bioactive substances with high locality and penetration ability without heating of biological tissue in vivo. Therefore, the development of novel microencapsulated drug formulations sensitive to LFMF is of paramount importance. Here, we report the result of LFMF-triggered release of the fluorescently labeled dextran from polyelectrolyte microcapsules modified with magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. Polyelectrolyte microcapsules were obtained by a method of sequential deposition of oppositely charged poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) on the surface of colloidal vaterite particles. The synthesized single domain maghemite nanoparticles integrated into the polymer multilayers serve as magneto-mechanical actuators. We report the first systematic study of the effect of magnetic field with different frequencies on the permeability of the microcapsules. The in situ measurements of the optical density curves upon the 100 mT LFMF treatment were carried out for a range of frequencies from 30 to 150 Hz. Such fields do not cause any considerable heating of the magnetic nanoparticles but promote their rotating-oscillating mechanical motion that produces mechanical forces and deformations of the adjacent materials. We observed the changes in release of the encapsulated TRITC-dextran molecules from the PAH/PSS microcapsules upon application of the 50 Hz alternating magnetic field. The obtained results open new horizons for the design of polymer systems for triggered drug release without dangerous heating and overheating of tissues.
