Introduction: Dysmenorrhea is defined as the presence of painful menstruation, and it affects daily activities in different ways. The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence and management of dysmenorrhea and to determine the impact of dysmenorrhea on the quality of life of medical students. Material and methods: The study conducted was prospective, analytical and observational and was performed between 7 November 2019 and 30 January 2020 in five university centers from Romania. The data was collected using an original questionnaire regarding menstrual cycles and dysmenorrhea. The information about relationships with family or friends, couples’ relationships and university activity helped to assess the effects of dysmenorrhea on quality of life. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: The study comprised 1720 students in total. The prevalence of dysmenorrhea was 78.4%. During their menstrual period, most female students felt more agitated or nervous (72.7%), more tired (66.9%), as if they had less energy for daily activities (75.9%) and highly stressed (57.9%), with a normal diet being difficult to achieve (30.0%). University courses (49.4%), social life (34.5%), couples’ relationships (29.6%), as well as relationships with family (21.4%) and friends (15.4%) were also affected, depending on the duration and intensity of the pain. Conclusion: Dysmenorrhea has a high prevalence among medical students and could affect the quality of life of students in several ways. During their menstrual period, most female students feel as if they have less energy for daily activities and exhibit a higher level of stress. The intensity of the symptoms varies considerably and, with it, the degree of discomfort it creates. Most student use both pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods to reduce pain (75.7%). University courses, social life, couples’ relationships, as well as relationships with family and friends are affected, depending on the duration and intensity of the pain.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are essential fatty acids for the human body. Seafood and microalgae are the most important sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Supplementation with 200 mg/day of DHA during pregnancy and breastfeeding has been suggested for women and infants in countries with low seafood consumption. Maternal concentration of DHA and EPA was associated with concentration in cord blood and breast milk. High concentrations of DHA and EPA were identified at the level of retinal photoreceptors and neuronal cell membranes. It was observed that supplementation with DHA and EPA during pregnancy had beneficial effects on the neurological development of the fetus and infant by improving language, memory, attention, and hand coordination, affecting sleep patterns, and improving visual acuity. Beneficial effects on the development of the infant were also associated with the maternal intake of omega-3 fatty acids during breastfeeding. Supplementation with DHA and EPA may reduce the risk of preterm birth but also of preeclampsia in low-risk pregnancies. Women of childbearing age should have an intake of 250 mg/day of DHA + EPA from their diet or supplements. To reduce the risk of premature birth, pregnant women must additionally receive at least 100–200 mg of DHA every day. It is recommended that supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids starts before 20 weeks of pregnancy. Beneficial effects on the mother have been identified, such as the reduction of postpartum depression symptoms, the decrease of cardiovascular risk, and the anti-inflammatory role.

Background: Dysmenorrhea is a common condition that may have negative effects on social life, couples’ relationships and professional activities. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the prevalence, risk factors and characteristics of dysmenorrhea and its impact on patients’ quality of life using a specific self-questionnaire named “DysmenQoL questionnaire”. We also checked the validity and reliability of this questionnaire in our population. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study that included 504 participants of reproductive age between 18 and 45 years of age. The data were collected with an original form divided into three sections. The last section (DysmenQoL questionnaire) included 20 statements scored from 1 (“never”) to 5 (“every time”) that evaluates the effects of menstrual pain on health and feelings, daily activities, relationships and professional activity. We calculated the sum of the scores for each statement and we called it the “DysmenQoL score”. Results: The prevalence of dysmenorrhea was 83.7%. The presence of dysmenorrhea was statistically significant associated with the degree of menstrual bleeding (p = 0.017), the presence of infertility (p = 0.034) and dyspareunia (p = 0.002), but also with the presence of premenstrual syndrome and a family history of dysmenorrhea (p < 0.001). Among the participants with dysmenorrhea, 73.9% considered that this symptom affected their quality of life, and this was correlated with pain intensity and the DysmenQoL score (p < 0.001). A significant difference regarding the DysmenQoL score depending on the pain intensity, frequency and duration of dysmenorrhea and the methods used to reduce the pain was observed. Conclusions: Dysmenorrhea had a high prevalence among the participants included in the study, and its presence was associated with a series of risk factors. Most women considered that dysmenorrhea affected their quality of life. The DysmenQoL questionnaire proved to be a reliable and valid method for evaluating the impact of dysmenorrhea on quality of life.

Background: Multifocal (MF) and multicentric (MC) breast cancers, defined by the presence of multiple synchronous tumor foci within the same breast, present important diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognostic challenges. Historically considered a contraindication for breast-conserving therapy (BCT), advances in imaging, surgical techniques, and adjuvant therapy have reshaped management strategies. Methods: A narrative literature review was conducted through PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus, prioritizing ISI-indexed articles published within the last 10–15 years. More than 55 relevant studies, including systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and large cohorts, were analyzed to evaluate epidemiology, pathological features, imaging modalities, treatment outcomes, and prognosis of MF/MC breast cancers. Results: The reported incidence of MF/MC breast cancers ranges from 10% to 24%, increasing when MRI or whole-organ pathology is applied. MRI can detect otherwise occult additional foci in up to 30% of patients, improving staging accuracy but raising concerns of overdiagnosis. MF/MC presentation is strongly associated with lobular histology, younger age at diagnosis, and higher rates of axillary involvement—nodal positivity is observed in up to 45% of MF/MC cases versus 28% in unifocal tumors. Pathological analyses demonstrate frequent clonal origin of MF lesions, whereas MC lesions may represent independent primaries, occasionally with receptor heterogeneity that alters systemic therapy selection. From a prognostic perspective, older series suggested shorter breast cancer-specific survival (e.g., median 154 vs. 204 months for MF/MC vs. unifocal disease), and higher local recurrence with BCT. However, contemporary analyses, including a 2022 meta-analysis of 15,703 patients, demonstrated no significant difference in overall or disease-free survival once adjusted for tumor size and nodal status. Local recurrence remains slightly higher with BCT in MF/MC (5.6% vs. 4.2%), but outcomes are equivalent to mastectomy when radiotherapy is appropriately delivered. Five-year survival in early-stage MF/MC exceeds 90% with guideline-concordant multimodal therapy. Conclusions: MF/MC breast cancers represent a biologically heterogeneous entity. Optimal outcomes rely on precise imaging, complete excision, tailored systemic therapy, and multidisciplinary management, with increasing acceptance of breast conservation in selected patients.

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory disease, characterized by the presence of ectopic endometrial tissue, that leads to dysmenorrhea, painful intercourse and infertility. The shift in paradigm from the previous belief that endometriosis exclusively impacts women of reproductive age has brought attention to the condition in both premenarchal and postmenopausal women. Currently, 2–4% of postmenopausal women have endometriosis. Many women experience menopausal symptoms during the peri- and postmenopausal periods and require extensive investigations and monitoring in order to avoid the recurrence of endometriosis symptoms or the risk of malignant transformation when treatment with menopausal hormones is elected. Our goal was to compile and present a clear and concise overview of the existing literature on postmenopausal endometriosis, offering an up-to-date and precise summary of the available information.

Cancer during pregnancy presents considerable challenges that arise from various factors, including the diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic implications of managing cancer in this unique patient population. There is a crucial need for an integrated approach that aligns medical interventions for both the pregnant patient and the developing embryo or fetus. Furthermore, the distinct characteristics associated with each stage of gestation may significantly influence the treatment protocols that can be proposed. Due to all of these factors, the importance of collaboration among healthcare professionals from different specialties (to ensure that both mother and child receive optimal care throughout the pregnancy) is often neglected. This review is designed to provide a thorough overview of the current standard procedures regarding the diagnosis and treatment options for cancer in pregnant patients in order to ensure the safety of mother and child. Furthermore, the review describes the feasibility of current fertility preservation methods, highlights the psychological effects of cancer during pregnancy and examines the risks and benefits of breastfeeding.
