Iztok Arčon is a professor of Physics at the University of Nova Gorica, in the Laboratory for Quantum Optics, and holds the position as a dean of the graduate school. His main research field is the analysis of atomic and molecular structures of new functional materials for energy storage devices and (photo)catalysis, ferroelectric and ferromagnetic ceramics, and environmental pollution using X-ray absorption spectroscopy with synchrotron radiation methods (XANES, EXAFS). He performed XAS experiments at different EU SR facilities (PETRA III at DESY, Hamburg; Elettra, Trieste; ESRF, Grenoble; Alba, Barcelona; Soleil, Paris). He has published more than 200 highly cited (over 3400 citations) scientific papers in journals with a high impact factor. He received the Jožef Stefan Golden Emblem Prize' in 1996 for his Ph.D. thesis research work. In 2006, he received the national Zois Award for outstanding achievements in the XAS field. In 2020, he received the Pregl Award of the National Institute of Chemistry for Exceptional Achievements in the field of chemistry and related disciplines. He is a delegate for Slovenia in the European User Synchrotron Organisation. In the last 10 years, he has been a member of project evaluation committees at four synchrotron radiation facilities (DESY, Elettra, ESRF, Soleil).
