While transit-oriented development (TOD) has been widely adopted in urban design alongside the expansion of urban metro transit, the creation of pedestrian-friendly environments has often been overlooked during implementation. This has resulted in a lower walking advantage around metro transit stations. To address this issue and encourage walking and public transport use in metro transit station areas, this study undertook a quantitative comparative analysis of the pedestrian environment in five Chongqing metro transit station areas. The analysis focused on three key dimensions: “comprehensive evaluation”, “basic scale”, and “structural quality”. The comprehensive evaluation considered factors such as the pedestrian catchment area ratio, POI kernel density distribution, and crowd agglomeration. The basic scale dimension comprised floor area ratio, building density, pedestrian road density, and the quantity of station entrances and exits. Finally, structural quality factors included land use type mixing degree, POI function mixing degree, intersection connectivity, median street length, pedestrian route directness, and green view index. Based on these analyses, this study proposes a series of pedestrian environment design strategies including land use and transportation. The strategies for land use advocate for “developing compact and diverse land use”, “strengthening attraction of station center”, “positioning large projects on the edge”, “restricting private transportation capabilities”. The strategies for transportation consist of “increasing pedestrian road density”, “traffic calming organization”, “subdivision of road types”, and “three-dimensional pedestrian traffic system”. These strategies aim to create a more humanized and environmentally friendly pedestrian environment, proactively rise to the challenge of climate change, thereby cultivating sustainable urban development.

This paper applied landscape indexes to evaluate the size, form, and structure of green spaces in the mountainous city of Chongqing and found that green spaces benefit from certain advantages in size, but the network suffered from low heterogeneity and limited interconnectivity. To ensure the integrity and continuity of ecological processes and improve the efficiency of ecosystem services (ES), the authors used Geographic Information System (GIS) software to conduct adaptability evaluation and adjacent buffer analysis for the existing green spaces, wetlands, rivers, and other landscapes with relatively high capacity for ES. We designed a comprehensive map of potential areas for UGS expansion by superimposing the maps obtained from adaptability evaluation and buffer analysis. We also proposed some strategies that respect, consider, and evaluate aspects and special features of urban environment to optimize green space planning and improve ES efficiency, such as protection of important areas, development of green corridors, and careful consideration of ecological processes and complex functions in urban areas. Based on these strategies, the paper put forth suggestions for green space planning to improve ES efficiency that can function as foundation for subsequent green space planning.

As an economically developed region, the Yangtze River Delta region has undergone earth-shaking changes in its rural settlements due to rapid urbanization. For the optimization and adjustment of rural settlements, it is crucial to disclose their distinguishing spatial features and impelling factors. Taking 307 county-level administrative regions in the Yangtze River Delta region as the research object, this study comprehensively uses the landscape index, nearest neighbor index, Moran index, and spatial hot spot detection system to analyze the spatial differentiation characteristics of rural residential location-scale morphology and reveals its driving factors using the optimal parameters-based geographical detector model. According to the findings, rural settlements in the Yangtze River Delta region exhibit an average nearest neighbor index of 0.7417, a Moran’s I of 1.2993 for the number of patches (NP), and a maximum patch density (PD) of 17.25 villages per square kilometer. It has significant characteristics of large-scale village cluster distribution, and the morphology of rural settlements in the southern and northern regions shows apparent differences. The natural environment and social economies, such as elevation, slope, precipitation, and population density, mainly drive the location-scale morphological spatial distribution of rural settlements. At the same time, the interaction between the natural environment, social economy, and location condition factors has a synergistic enhancement effect on the spatial distribution of location-scale morphology of rural settlements.

A road network is an important spatial carrier for the efficient and reliable operation of urban services and material flows. In recent years, the “high road density, small block size” trend has become a major focus in urban planning practices. However, whether high-density road networks are highly resilient lacks quantitative evidence. This study presents a multi-scale analytical framework for measuring road network resilience from a topological perspective. We abstract 186 ideal orthogonal grid density models from an actual urban road network, quantifying resilience under two disturbance scenarios: random failures and intentional attacks. The results indicate that road network density indeed has a significant impact on resilience, with both scenarios showing a trend where higher densities correlate with greater resilience. However, the increase in resilience value under the intentional attack scenario is significantly higher than that under the random failure scenario. The findings indicate that network density plays a decisive role in determining resilience levels when critical edges fail. This is attributed to the greater presence of loops in denser networks, which helps maintain connectivity even under intentional disruption. In the random failure scenario, network resilience depends on the combined effects of the node degree and density. This study offers quantitative insights into the design of resilient urban forms in the face of disruptive events, establishing reference benchmarks for road network spacing at both meso- and micro-scales. The results provide practical guidance for resilient city planning in both newly developed and existing urban areas, supporting informed decision-making in urban morphology and disaster risk management.

Ecological land restoration is necessary to develop a comprehensive land amalgamation strategy. Scientific ecological restoration zoning is crucial for the development of differentiated restoration strategies, as well as for the improvement of quality during construction. This study used a series of methods, such as the InVEST model, spatial autocorrelation, and coupling coordination degree models, using Liangjiang New Area as an example to quantify both regional ecosystem services supply and demand at the county and district levels. The land’s spatial ecological restoration zones were determined, and the optimization strategies based on the supply–demand matching and coordination relationship were presented. The results revealed the following: (1) A considerable difference was identified between the supply and demand of ecosystem services in Liangjiang New Area of Chongqing, with “high in the northeast and low in the southwest” spatial patterns for supply and “high in the southwest and low in the northeast” spatial patterns for demand; (2) The supply–demand matching relationship of ecosystem services in Liangjiang New Area of Chongqing was characterized by spatial mismatches of high supply and low demand and low supply and high demand, with an average coordination degree index of 0.2, indicating uncoordinated supply and demand; (3) Based on the supply–demand relationship of ecosystem services, the regional ecological base, and the functional orientation of upper planning, Liangjiang New Area was divided into four zones: high supply–low demand, low supply–high demand, and high supply–high demand zones, for which the respective optimization strategies were presented. In some ways, this study contributes to the existing research concerning the supply–demand relationship for small-scale ecosystem services in new development zones located in mountainous cities.

China’s unprecedented rapid urbanization has encroached upon ecologically sensitive areas. Since 2013, Wuhan, a central urban hub in China, has adopted Ecological Control Line Planning (ECLP) to regulate urban growth and preserve ecological integrity. This study evaluates how ECLP is implemented in the Wuhan Metropolitan Development Zone (WMDZ), a critical region for harmonizing urban expansion with ecological preservation. The assessment integrates two fundamental aspects—conformity and utilization—with evaluations across spatial and ecological dimensions. This methodology builds a technical framework for rapid identification and detailed analysis of planning effects through LULC statistics and landscape connectivity index monitoring. The findings reveal that the ECLP is spatially conformable and utilizable, successfully curbing urban expansion and channeling development towards the urban growth boundary (UGB) and ecological development area (EDA). However, ECLP has not significantly mitigated the decline in ecological connectivity. Details include the following: (1) The general spatial consistency of the ECLP was 88.53%, with the EDA and ecological baseline area (EBA) achieving 85.18% and 88.98%, respectively. (2) Most of the increase in impervious land within ecological lines originated from agricultural and water areas, with only 7.02 km2 of land transitioning to non-agricultural and non-ecological uses. (3) The integral index of connectivity (IIC) exhibited a more rapid deterioration post-ECLP implementation, suggesting the disruption or degradation of critical connectivity pathways or patches within the ecological network. (4) Core ecological patches experienced significant losses inside and outside the UGB, with losses within the UGB being 2.51 times greater. The findings underscore the importance of ecological connectivity in implementing ecological space protection planning and the need for the flexible governance of areas where protection and development conflicts arise.
