The effect of fertilization on the yield of medicinal and aromatic plants is important. Among various fertilizers, seaweed is an environment friendly organic fertilizer. This study was conducted to determine the effects of foliar application of different doses of seaweed extract on the yield and essential oil content of coriander. Application was done before and at the beginning of flowering at two different locations. Results showed that the essential oil content was higher in the location with high sand content while the yield and yield components were higher at the location with low sand content and high organic matter content. Seaweed application at a dose of 2 ml L-1 showed positive effects on the growth, development, yield and essential oil contents of coriander plant. Linalool (%) was determined as the most important essential oil compound and the foliar application of seaweed showed positive effects on the linalool percentage. It can be stated that the foliar application of seaweed (organic fertilizers) has beneficial impacts in terms of increasing the yield and quality traits of coriander.

Purple basil is among the most important basil varieties and its essential oil is used for several purposes including medicinal and aromatic uses. Soil types may impact the plant growth, development, and essential oil composition. Hence, it is important to find the most suitable soil type which may produce basil plants having essential oil with the best composition and concentration. For this reason, plant samples of purple basil that were grown in areas with clay, loamy sand, and sandy-clay loam soil types were collected and evaluated to determine the changes in the yield and essential oil components. Essential oil contents were determined with the Clevenger Device, and essential oil compositions were determined by using GC and GC/MS analysis. The highest essential oil yield according to soil types was obtained from the plant samples that were grown in the loamy sand soil. It was also found that the main compounds present in Arapgir town purple basil were methylcinnamate and linalool that was also present in all Turkish purple basil under all types of soil. According to the soil types, the highest concentration (46.03%) of methylcinnamate was observed in loamy sand soils, and the lowest (42.33%) was obtained from sandy-clay loam soils and found to be significantly different. Data regarding correlations between soil types and essential oil ratios showed that organic matter and P2O5 had a significant negative correlation with methylcinnamate. The present study will help researchers and farmers to choose the most suitable soil type to achieve maximum essential oil production from purple basil.

Purple basil is one of the most important morphological varieties of basil. The present study aims to determine the changes in the essential oil composition and specific phenolic acid contents of purple basil in response to the increased temperature and CO2 levels. The plants were grown at two temperature levels (26/16 °C and 29/19 °C) and four different CO2 concentrations (400, 600, 800, and 1000 ppm). The essential oils were obtained by Clevenger apparatus and the essential oil compositions were determined using GC and GC/MS. Moreover, the concentrations of three important phenolic acid contents (mg/kg) were determined using HPLC. In the present study, it was determined that the main components of local Arapgir landrace of Turkish’s purple basil were methyl (Z)-cinnamate and linalool, and it is classified in the methyl (Z)-cinnamate/linalool group of Turkish Basil. Comparing different temperatures and CO2 concentrations, it was determined that the temperature increased total phenylpropanoid content. However, whereas the methylcinnamate didn’t change significantly with temperature, the linalool content was found to be higher at lower temperatures. In both temperature conditions, total phenylpropanoid content was found to be the highest in control CO2 concentration (400 ppm), and it showed regular decrease until 800 ppm. However, linalool increased regularly until 800 ppm. The highest data in rosmarinic and caffeic acids yields were obtained at lower temperatures, while there weren’t regular trends in CO2 concentrations. In the present study, it was determined that the components of basil might change depending on the temperature and CO2 concentrations.

The present study aimed to investigate the changes in the essential oil contents of some Origanum hybrids grown at different carbon dioxide (400 and 800 ppm) levels in a fully automated carbon dioxide greenhouse. The chemical composition of essential oils was analyzed gas chromatography/ mass spectrometry (GC/MS). It was found that, among the Origanum hybrids, there were differences between the essential oil contents of those grown under natural conditions and controlled greenhouse conditions. While an increase in carbon dioxide level significantly increased the thymol and carvacrol components, which are among important monoterpene components, of Origanum syriacum x O. onites and O. syriacum x O. vulgare hybrids, whereas it led to a decrease in O. syriacum x O. majorona hybrid. To determine the effects on germination of Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson seeds under laboratory conditions, the essential oils were used at 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 μl/petri doses. The most effective doses of essential oils for preventing the germination of A. palmeri seed were found to be 2 and 4 μl/petri. In preventing the germination of seeds, the most effective (100 %) application for all the essential oils was achieved with O. syriacum x O. onites hybrid grown at 800 ppm. These results show that the CO2 increases that may occur as a result of climate change in the next years may lead to changes in the content of essential oils in Origanum hybrids and may have the potential to be used as bio-herbicidal to prevent the germination of A palmeri.
