Can public–private research favor sustainable economic growth? Can innovation in terms of predictive maintenance (a recently consolidated evolution compared to the more traditional final and preventive maintenance) favor sustainable business balance? Drawing on the Quadruple Helix model and adopting the users’ (fourth helix) perspective, this paper seeks to provide initial answers to these two questions. Following an exploratory approach, it applies case study methodology to present the research outcomes of the D.I.A.S.E.I. Project, a co-financed research and development (R&D) project. Using a mixed-methods approach, narrative and quantitative, the study highlights that investing in predictive maintenance allows companies to reach better profitability ratios and sustainable value indexes. This is possible because of the improved quality of the provided services, higher revenues and the reduction of extraordinary maintenance costs. Furthermore, if companies support investment in predictive maintenance through correct financial decisions, they may create value over time and favor sustainable business balance. The work is the first empirical investigation, which should encourage further explorations. There are numerous implications, including reference to the co-creation of value, the effects on decision support systems and sustainable competitive advantage.

The present work aims to deepen the concept of resilience in order to better understand, in terms of viability, the determinants of the competitiveness of companies that operate in conditions of uncertainty and change. A systems view and some of the fundamental concepts (FCs) of the Viable Systems Approach (VSA) have been taken into consideration. To evaluate the findings with practical evidences, a case study has been conducted to evaluate resilience in a managerial context and to apply the proposed systems approach. Even though this study considers resilience in a systems way only, using a specific theoretical framework, several practical implications have been derived. They refer to the possibility of analysing resilience in a systems perspective, also as a distinctive feature of the viability (PN.1). In this approach, resilient behaviours can be interpreted as badges of acting viable, because they are provided with a precise meaning linked to the purpose of the person who implements them (PN.2). The determinants that favour resilience represent rather subset of the determinants that pertain to the competitiveness of a viable system company (PN.3). As well, findings show that the competitiveness of a business system is a matter of viability (PN.4).

This work proposes a conceptual framework that combines the service ecosystems view (stemming from Service-Dominant logic) with the concept of territorial ecosystems (stemming from destination management studies). The paper aims at exploring the underlying dynamics of territorial ecosystems that can impact the competitiveness and sustainability of a community as a whole. The main goal is to support decision making in disadvantaged territories characterized by the urge to harmonize needs to achieve a sustainable advantage. Based on a literature review of the evolution of territory in destination management, a model for meta-management in territorial ecosystems is proposed. The empirical research adopts a mixed method (content analysis and semi-structured interviews) to explore the single case study of Libera, an Italian non-profit association that challenges organized crime. The study reframes Libera, its actors and territory as a service ecosystem. The findings from the case study reveal the existence of different types of territorial capital at the micro, meso and macro-level. Moreover, the results allow the identification of three main steps that the governance can realize at a meta-management level to harmonize the actor’s objectives and goals and foster the creation of a cohesive sustainable-oriented culture. From a theoretical point of view, the study encourages further research to introduce a strategic framework able to identify different strategies for value co-creation and sustainable outcomes. Revealing the key drivers for the local development and sustainability of territories can help managers understand how to optimize the relationships of all the ecosystem’s stakeholders and how to monitor value co-creation in progress during all the phases of the service provision.

In the last few years, service science has opened a debate on the need to adopt new approaches to better understand emerging social and economic dynamics. By following this direction, different multi- and transdisciplinary research pathways are requesting to consider an increasing number of new variables in the management of complex service systems (CSSs), underlying the fact that traditional approaches are useless in supporting decision makers in facing the challenges imposed by a more articulated scenario. To bridge this gap, this paper focuses attention on the phenomenon of "smart cities" as an example of CSSs with the aim of investigating the ways in which actors’ perceptions affect opportunities and willingness for value cocreation and collaborative paths. Via a survey on a random sample of 374 providers and users of a city service platform in Brno (Czech Republic), the actors’ perceptions were analysed, and through structural equation modeling, the relationships between actors’ perceptions and willingness to build value cocreation and collaborative paths were tested. The principal goal was to attract the attention of the service community to the role of cognitive and psychological dimensions affecting value cocreation and collaborative paths in CSS, using the example of a smart city as tangible evidence of CSS.

Sustainability seems to be a hot topic today upon which a paradigmatic transformation is going on; this affects many fields and sectors by revealing the significant implications for actors’ participation, such as in healthcare. Today, healthcare calls for renewing and increasing its own main processes of hospitalization, as inspired by the current new light of sustainability; hospitalization at home (HaH) practices allow for new forms of hospitalizations, which are much more adherent to the real needs of patients and caregivers. Studies in service dominant logic (S-D logic) on service ecosystems help us in understanding which are the dynamics that are shaping actual conditions in healthcare. With the aim of contributing to the challenging debate about the role of “sustainability for healthcare”, this manuscript proposes a conceptual framework for investigating healthcare domains through the interpretative lens provided by the service ecosystems view. Previous managerial contributions are analyzed in an attempt to emphasize the contact points between studies about service ecosystem and sustainability so as to outline the possible roadmaps for sustainability in the healthcare domain. The three dimensions of HaH—efficiency of healthcare service, effectiveness in resource usage, and patients’ satisfaction—have been identified as possible levers on which promoting healthcare processes inspired by sustainability principles and their relations with the three pillars of sustainability science—the economy, society, and environment—have been analyzed. The reflections herein are finally discussed for proposing possible future directions for research interested in promoting a sustainability-based healthcare management.

More than 10 years ago, IBM launched Service Science as an open and aggregating initiative in an attempt to integrate different knowledge domains contributing to the study and better understanding of the dynamics of Service Systems and Smart Service Systems. Today, there are few published manuscripts that are effectively grounded in different knowledge domains. Moreover, in the fields of management and marketing, further investigation is needed to determine what are the effective contributes to scientific and theoretical advances in Service Science. This contribution to the second edition of the Service Science Handbook will detail the results of an investigation conducted through a bibliometric analysis of key scientific journals and books that, in their mission statements, have a clearly stated goal of reporting on advances in Service Science. It is demonstrated that the majority of the manuscripts seem to be grounded in vertical and specific scientific domains. Further, manuscripts produced by experts on management and marketing appear not to address models or theoretical propositions capable of advancing Service Science. Instead, these manuscripts are applicative and empirical studies, or they merely apply existing models or theories to specific Service Science issues or peculiarities. These findings should stimulate the growing Service Science community to improve the integration of the various scientific knowledge domains that are relevant to Service Science, to increase the number of co-authored articles by researchers with different interests, and to strongly promote scientific integration among scholars.

Purpose - The topic of this paper is about Smart Service Systems (SSS), as recent evolution of service systems. The aim is to focus on the connection between structural/system traits of SSS and the value co-creation therein, and how the achievement of a co-creative experience is effectively supportive of the SSS viability. Design/methodology/approach - This conceptual paper deepens two scientific propositions: (i) Are we able to distinguish between ‘structural’ and ‘system’ features of SSS as drivers for value co-creation processes? (ii) Are we able to define effective value co-creation processes the blue-print for SSS viability? The lens used is, in particular, the Viable Systems Approach (VSA). Findings - Findings confirm a link among traits of SSS and value co-creation processes, regarding (i) multi-part specialized contribution, (ii) unopportunistic behaviours and (iii) co-working and enjoying for results (win-win logic). The smartness of SSS is considered as the basis of their viability. Research limitations/implications - Limits of this work depends on the theoretical nature of reflections introduced up-to-know. This framework will stimulate future studies by deepening case studies or empirical surveys. Practical implications - Applying a smart context to modern service ‘events’, we can enjoy important changes in our life. These assumptions find practical evidence on stage of studies on Service worldwide. Originality/value - Advances in Literature on Service Science (SS) lead us to better understand the essence, organization and design of SSS. Studies and reflections on System Thinking support observers to highlight static pre-conditions and dynamic determinants featuring with value co-creation processes.

While companies are investing increasingly in sustainability measures, the effects of firms’ sustainability actions on consumer perceptions should not be taken for granted and deserve to be investigated. By adopting the interpretative lens of consumer culture theory, this paper defines a set of cognitive dimensions which can describe consumer perceptions of sustainability actions and the behaviors of small–medium enterprises (SMEs), with the aim of identifying the relationships between firms’ sustainability actions and the economic performance of SMEs. To this extent, the cognitive dimensions proposed by Green & Petre (1996) are re-elaborated to define a set of customer cognitive dimensions in the sustainability domain (resilience, wholeness, mapping, coding, and engagement). Thus, the relationships between SMEs’ sustainability actions and behaviors, the defined cognitive influencers and SME performance is empirically tested. In particular, a survey of a sample of 1137 customers of 175 Italian SMEs is analyzed using structural equation modelling (SEM). The findings show that the adoption of certain sustainability actions influences consumer perceptions, which in turn impacts the economic performance of SMEs.

To symbolize the importance of contextual factors of provision in the contemporary service era, in festival research, the term festivalscape has been proposed. Despite the large number of works investigating the construct, extant research does not adequately assess the systemic and interactive nature of festivals, which can be viewed as a set of interconnected elements. To bridge this gap, this article evaluates four festival attributes (atmosphere, service quality, people interaction and collateral services) according to service-dominant logic and service-ecosystem view. Current work examines a light festival organized in Salerno during the Christmas holiday using a sequential regression analysis, revealing the mediating role of experience and satisfaction in influencing behavioural intention.

Aim of this work is to shed light on sustainable value and develop a model, based on vSa and translated at applicative level through the system dynamics methodology for measuring sustainable value. By adopting vSa perspective, value, characterized by strongly subjective contents, will be considered as a vector quantity, as the result of the subjective weighting of the different dimensions that may change according to the considered organization. Starting from the analysis of system dynamics and vSa, we will implement the theoretical framework into a model developed with system dynamics, hence through a methodology capable of addressing systemic problems which is also an expressive approach to solve issues arising in complex systems (characterized by interdependence, mutual interaction, information feedback, circular causality). In order to translate theory into “action and application” we will develop a model through which it will be possible to exploit the advantages of vSa implemented into an SD model, which ultimately can also be instantiated to specific cases and then simulated for further quantitative insights. Currently, there is no theoretical/practical approach to sustainable value measurement for business organizations that simultaneously considers the dimensions of the triple bottom line together with the subjective perspective of decision-makers. From these considerations, we derived the idea to integrate vSa and system dynamics with the aim of analyzing the issue of sustainable value, whose triple dimension is usually (erroneously) seen under a perspective that does not consider the interactions among those three dimensions. The integration of the subjective perspective within a model for calculating sustainable value can be seen as considering vSa as the theoretical framework, and system dynamics as the methodology that allows translating such an approach into a model that can later be simulated. It is also worth mentioning that through the application of the vSa theory to the case of sustainable value, by means of a transcoding approach like the system dynamics one, we are somehow trying to “redefine”, or better “enhance”, the vSa theory itself, by “operationalizing” it.

Over time an increasing attention has been paid to the concept of complexity but a clear definition of their implication and useful guidelines to manage its dynamics seem to be still missing in managerial studies. With the aim to bridge this gap, the paper aims to link the conceptual framework provided by the systems thinking (ST) and service science (SS). The attention is focused on the role of viability in supporting a better understanding and managing of internal and external complexity with specific reference to the domain of smart service systems (SSS). Building upon a multi-disciplinary conceptual framework, the paper traces some reflections to address decision makers' strategies and behaviours in managing SSS with the aim to increase opportunity for survival through a better understanding of logics and dynamics of complexity.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to show the relevance of the interest in sharing the common purpose and in searching for a common survival of emerging eco-system (ES) as an entity that “is not” but emerges by the viable actors interaction. Design/methodology/approach This conceptual paper contributes to the research by defining the ES building on the contributions of SD logic and viable systems approach (VSA), with a particular focus on the VSA perspective. Findings An ES emerges as a viable “system of systems” by an observer’s interpretation of the simultaneous interactions between different viable actors/systems that are sharing a common purpose (the survival of the ES), exchanging resources following a viable value co-creation model. Each actor/system could represent a level of quality of belonging to the ES looking for the opportunity to be resonant with the ES. Research limitations/implications The ES features and the role of each actor inside could be deepened through different theoretical perspectives and the same VSA to the ES could be reached with empirical explorations. Practical implications Understanding the nature of the ES, the practitioners are able to explain better their position in relation to partners and competitors. It is possible to be a part of several emerging ESs looking for the will to contribute to the ES’ survival and to the sharing of the purpose of the interactive systems/actors. In a medium and long run, the measure of the resonance is useful to understand the quality in interaction. Originality/value The work provides a definition of the ES and the actors inside focusing on the perspective of VSA, by integrating the concept of viable value co-creation and solidarity-based logic; in particular, the concept of Centro Commerciale Naturale is used to show the emergence of the ES in a relational context generated by the interaction between city, service and retailers in a city center.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the characteristics of actors that allow them to relate to others actors in the system through shared intentionality (orientation) and the nature of the A4A relationship and the results that such interactions bring to the emergent system based on this shared purpose (finality). Design/methodology/approach The topic is approached by theoretical analysis and conceptual development of three integrative frameworks: the sociological perspective, service-dominant logic and a particular perspective of system thinking: the viable system approach (vSa). Findings The A4A relationships involve value co-creation based on actors integrating their resources and acting with intentionality to obtain value by providing benefits to other parties and by belonging to the emergent viable system; actor acts for other actors directly involved in the relationship generating positive effects for the whole system in which it is contextualized. Research limitations/implications Future empirical research might better support findings. Social implications Many social implications deriving from an augmented role of actors engaged within social relationships in co-creation exchanges. From the title of the paper A4A over on the manuscript describes numerous social inferences of actors in co-creation. Originality/value A4A is a relationship formed by actors that interact for the benefit of the whole system in which are involved. They find own benefit from the benefit created for the system in which they live and act. In A4A relationships the value of the single actor comes from the participation to the viability of the whole system.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the decision-making process in the management of the complex adaptive systems (CAS), particularly focusing on the dimensions that affect the individual decision maker (DM) when passing from decision to behavior in fitting processes. Although the importance of the general process of fitting in terms of organizational design has been highlighted in earlier studies, a closer focus on the DM perspective is required. Design/methodology/approach Starting from the theoretical frameworks of viable systems approach (vSa) and addressing the evolving concepts of change and adaptation in CAS, the work takes the DM perspective and investigates the dimensions involved in the paths that lead complex decisions into behaviors, when referring to fitting processes. The paper reviews the vSa and the concept of CAS, deepening the decision making in fitting processes. Then, the paper proceeds to discuss the schemes and the categories that affect, at different levels, the decision and behavioral choices by proposing an interpretative framework. Findings The paper proposes a general framework useful to recognize/identify which are the elements/dimensions that have to be considered when organizations change in pursuing survival. The findings of the paper also show how adopting a vSa as a meta-model can be insightful to the understanding of service systems and useful in fully comprehending decision-making processes and behavior in complex adaptive system. Originality/value The originality of this paper lies in exploring the decision making process in CAS, adopting a closer perspective on the single DM through the lens of the vSa.
