Steel slag is a main form of solid waste. Using this component to replace part of the aggregate in an asphalt mixture is an effectively way of treating solid waste. To study the performance degradation of asphalt mixture with various content of steel slag under heavy loading, some large-sized basalt hot mixed asphalt mixture (BHMA) and steel slag hot mixed asphalt mixture (SHMA) in a form of specimens were prepared and a heavy loading wheel tracking test was conducted. The aggregate characteristics of basalt and steel slag were measured. The deformation and skid resistance of the asphalt mixture with different content of steel slag was tested and analyzed. Due to the particle characteristics of steel slag aggregate, it was found that a low content of steel slag can effectively improve the resistance to deformation and skid resistance of the asphalt mixture under heavy loading. The response of SHMA can still meet the pavement technical requirement after long-term heavy loading service. The main change in the mixture under heavy loading is the crushing of the 9.5–16 mm aggregate, and the content of this part also significantly affects the deformation. This study explains the mechanism of degradation of SHMA under heavy loading: the large aggregate is crushed and forms a new aggregate skeleton structure.

To investigate the effects of epoxy resin at low content on the physical properties, rheological properties, and self-healing properties of asphalt, epoxy asphalts with epoxy resin contents of 2%, 5%, 10%, and 20% were prepared. The distribution of epoxy asphalt (EA) in epoxy resin (ER) was quantitatively studied by fluorescence microscopy (FM) to investigate the feasibility of the preparation process. The glass transition temperature of epoxy asphalt was quantitatively analyzed by the differential thermal analyzer (DSC). The physical properties of epoxy asphalt were characterized by penetration test, ductility test, and softening point test. The rheological properties of epoxy asphalt were analyzed by the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) to evaluate the self-healing properties of epoxy asphalt. The results show that the epoxy resin could be uniformly distributed in the asphalt, as verified by fluorescence microscopy (FM). With the increase in epoxy resin content, the glass transition temperature of epoxy asphalt gradually decreases, and the epoxy asphalt with 20% content shows the lowest glass transition temperature. At the same time, epoxy resin gives asphalt a higher modulus and high temperature performance, and the penetration and softening point of epoxy asphalt has also been greatly improved. On the contrary, the three-dimensional cross-linked grid structure, which is formed by epoxy resin and curing agent, reduces the rheological properties of epoxy asphalt and increases the elastic components of epoxy asphalt. Although the maltenes diagram still exhibits typical viscoelastic characteristic, the flow behavior index and flow activation energy of epoxy asphalt decreased.

With the increase of heavy traffic transportation, it is meaningful to study the performance change of pavements under heavy loads. To study the development of asphalt mixture under heavy load, an AC-13 asphalt mixture was prepared and a large-sized specimen wheel tracking test was conducted. Samples from different periods were extracted to research the influence of the cumulative load times under heavy load on asphalt mixtures. It was found that there were different variation rules on the performance of the asphalt mixture under different load conditions. The failure time on skid resistance was predicted by the fitting curve. Heavy load conditions would greatly speed up the failure of skid resistance. According to the sieving results, the stable gradation of 10–16 mm, 5–10 mm, 3–5 mm, and 0–3 mm after heavy load grinding was 10%, 37%, 23%, and 30%. It was found that the content of 10–16 mm had a significant correlation with the permanent deformation of the asphalt mixture, while there were no significant correlation between aggregate and skid resistance.
