The wide application of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is hindered due to the highly brittle nature of the material, which contributes a major factor towards cracking-related distresses. While the utilisation of rejuvenating agents has been shown to enhance the flexibility of RAP, they also trigger certain negative effects on the performance of asphalt mixtures. In view of this, potential rejuvenators should be able to alter the rheological properties of asphalts to limit fatigue issues and enhance the potential of low-temperature cracking. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the possibility of extraction and characterisation of maltene from virgin asphalt (VA) as a potential rejuvenating agent in RAP. Several physicochemical characteristics were examined, including density, viscosity, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, CHNS elemental analysis, and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. Finally, the stiffness modulus characteristics of the different types of asphalt binders were evaluated at low and high temperatures. The results demonstrated that maltene was successfully extracted from VA using petroleum ether. In addition, the GC–MS showed that the extracted maltene contained polar and non-polar compounds with low molecular weights compared to VA. Furthermore, the spectra curve of maltene was very similar to that of asphalt, indicating its compatibility with asphalt binder and prospective use. Finally, adding maltene to aged asphalt decreased stiffness values to 0.0063, 0.0499, and 0.0108 MPa, which are equivalent to VA values (0.0061, 0.0481, and 0.0104 MPa) at loading times of 1.0, 0.1, and 0.55 s, respectively. Meanwhile, the stiffness modulus characteristics at low temperature were restored with the addition of maltene.

Asphalt recycling technology with a high content of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is becoming more important as the price of paving materials rises and sustainable development and environmental conservation rules become more rigorous. Nevertheless, road authorities in numerous countries still prohibit the utilisation of RAP in asphalt mixes due to the negative impacts of RAP on the performance of asphalt mixtures. Consequently, different rejuvenators have been introduced to reinstate the original attributes of aged asphalt to resolve this issue. This study incorporated vacuum residue (VR) into mixtures with 40% RAP. The physical, rheological, and mechanical traits of the resultant samples were assessed. The results show that the 7.5% VR rejuvenator minimised the RAP asphalt ageing impact. Furthermore, the rejuvenating agent demonstrated physical and rheological rehabilitative benefits for the aged asphalt. The mechanical attributes of the rejuvenated samples were also enhanced compared to the virgin asphalt (VA) specimens.

Rigid pavements have high compressive strength and low flexural strength due to the brittleness of concrete. This leads to the formation of cracks easily under the applied loads of vehicles; therefore, the design of concrete pavements usually leads to an increase in the high thicknesses. Hybrid steel fibers are used in concrete to increase flexural strength and minimize crack formation. Using concrete with steel fibers in pavements reduces the required concrete thickness. In recent decades, the application of the finite element method to predict the behavior of rigid pavements has increased. This study investigates the influence of hybrid steel fiber on the behavior of rigid pavements; a finite element modeling approach is used to simulate the case study. Several parameters are entered and investigated in this study, including the proportion mix of hybrid fiber concrete (HFC), which contains 0.2% macro synthetic fibers and 0.68, 0.8, and 0.96% of steel fibers, compressive strengths of 25, 35, and 45 MPa, slab thicknesses of 150, 200, and 250 mm, and the load of the tandem axle at the edge of mid slab on the Winkler foundation. The ATENA software package is used to perform a nonlinear finite element analysis. Thirty-six rigid specimen pavements with dimensions of 3600 × 3600 mm were modeled in this investigation. The results showed that the addition ratio (0.68 + 0.2)% of hybrid fibers is more effective in improving the load bearing capacity with a slab thickness of 150 mm and 25 MPa compressive strength.

A framework is presented to explore the influential role of hybrid fibers on the performance of two-way flat slabs against punching shear failure. A finite element (FE) modeling approach via the ATENA-GID software package is used to simulate the case study. Four variables are covered in this investigation including different mix proportions of hybrid fiber-reinforced concrete (HFRC), which contains 0.2% of macro synthetic fibers, and (0.68, 0.8, and 0.96%) steel fibers (SFs) (volumetric ratios), high compressive strengths of 50, 70, and 90 MPa, different main steel reinforcement ratios based on main steel bars of 16, 20, and 25 mm, as well as 150, 200, and 250 mm as thicknesses of the slab. 106 two-way slabs (1900 × 1900 mm) models were generated in this investigation, besides 8 verification materials models. Furthermore, a parametric analysis was performed on the results of FE modeling. The FE modeling results of verification materials tend to be accurate with a correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.9578). Moreover, the outcomes of the study show; that the hybrid fibers' effective ratio comprises about 0.96% SFs and 0.2% macrosynthetic fibers, using 0.54% of main steel reinforcement ratio which is supposedly more economical than other ratios of main reinforcement, 150 mm is a crucial thickness of the flat slab with 70 or 90 MPa as high compressive strength. The combined results can enhance the performance of the flat slab by preventing shear punching failure.
