Land surface temperature (LST) is a key parameter in the study of surface energy balance and climate change from local through to global scales. Vegetation has inevitably influenced the LST by changing the surface properties. However, the thermal environment pattern in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) still remains unclear after the implementation of large-scale ecological restoration projects. In this study, the temporal and spatial variation characteristics of LST were analyzed based on the Theil–Sen estimator, Mann–Kendall trend analysis and Hurst exponent from 2003 to 2021. The relationships between vegetation and LST were further revealed by using correlation analysis and trajectory-based analysis. The results showed that the interannual LST was in a state of fluctuation and rise, and the increasing rate at night time (0.035 °C·yr−1) was faster than that at day time (0.007 °C·yr−1). An obvious cooling trend could be identified from 2007 to 2012, followed by a rapid warming. Seasonally, the warming speed was the fastest in summer and the slowest in autumn. Additionally, it was found that autumn LST had a downward trend of 0.073 °C·yr−1 after 2015. Spatially, the Yangtze River Delta, Hubei province, and central Sichuan province had a significant warming trend in all seasons, except autumn. The northern Guizhou province and Chongqing showed a remarkable cooling trend only in autumn. The Hurst exponent results indicated that the spring LST change was more consistent than the other three seasons. It was found by studying the effect of land cover types on LST changes that sparse vegetation had a more significant effect than dense vegetation. Vegetation greening contributed 0.0187 °C·yr−1 to the increase in LST in winter, which was spatially concentrated in the central region of the YRB. For the other three seasons, vegetation greening slowed the LST increase, and the degree of the effect decreased sequentially in autumn, summer, spring and winter. These results improve the understanding of past and future variations in LST and highlight the importance of vegetation for temperature change mitigation.

Global climate change, especially extreme drought events, presents a complicated challenge to humanity and Earth’s system in the 21st century. As an extremely important carbon sink region in China, Southwest China has encountered frequent drought disasters in recent decades. It is critical to explore the frequency, duration, severity, and other associated characteristics of drought events as well as their spatial and temporal patterns in the region from a long-term perspective. In this study, we used the latest dataset from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) between 1901 and 2018 to extract all drought events by calculating the standardized anomaly of the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). Theil–Sen median trend analysis, the Mann–Kendall test, and the moving t-test were used to reveal the spatial trend and mutation point of drought severity. The results showed that (1) The standardized anomaly of the 3-month SPEI can accurately identify drought events in Southwest China. In total, 72 drought events occurred during this period, of which the consecutive drought in autumn, winter, and spring from 2009 to 2010 lasted the longest, having the most substantial severity and the most extensive damage range. (2) Drought events mainly started in spring and early summer and ended in autumn and winter. The distribution of drought was the most expansive and the drought severity was the most serious in September. (3) In terms of spatial pattern, Guangxi has the highest frequency of drought events, with some areas experiencing up to 100 events. The average duration of drought events ranged between 3.5 and 5.5 months, with most lasting for 4–5 months. The most severe drought areas are mainly concentrated in southern Sichuan and western Yunnan. Overall, the severity of drought events in the west were generally higher compared to that in the east. (4) Over the past 120 years, most of the region (82.46%) showed an increasing trend in drought severity, with a slope of up to −0.01. About 15.12% of the areas exhibited a significant drying trend (p < 0.05), particularly in southern Sichuan, eastern Guizhou, and northern and southern Yunnan. Such analyses can serve as a scientific foundation for developing drought prevention and mitigation measures as well as exploring how drought events affect the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems in Southwest China.

Specific knowledge about the characteristics of coastal land use along the sea–land direction helps to better understand the spatial heterogeneity of coastal land use, which could offer scientific support for rational land management and the sustainable development of the coastal zone. However, the traditional methods including buffering or the regional method are hard to extract detailed spatial structure and location correlations of coastal land use along the sea–land direction. Therefore, we developed a model, called sequence–based clustering of coastal land use pattern (SCCLUP), to mine the coastal land use sequence patterns (CLUSPs) along the sea–land direction. As a case study in the major coastal zone of Bohai Bay and the Yellow River Delta from 1990 to 2010, we found that: (1) The land use showed a sequential distribution along the sea–land direction. And the land use closed to shoreline and inland boundary had relative stable sequential location along the sea–land direction. However, the middle land uses had dynamic sequential locations that led to multiple CLUSPs; (2) due to the increasing percent of construction land, the artificial level of CLUSPs was continuously increasing and new CLUSPs tended to distribute around port areas. Different CLUSPs with similar land use sequential relationships tended to have similar land use structure along the sea–land direction; (3) the land uses sequential location along the sea–land direction revealed the actual distance of land use to the shoreline and had a tight correlation with environmental factors (salinity, water, and landform). The land use with large increasing and wide adaptivity (like construction land) had a large impact on the changes of CLUSPs in the study area. Therefore, strong control should be provided for the excessive expansion of land use like construction land to limit the over changes in land use pattern along the sea–land direction. Additionally, the spatial heterogeneity of land use along the sea–land direction should be considered to a better understanding of anthropic impacts on the coastal zone.

The depth distribution of soil organic carbon (SOC) in a soil profile is important to examine the effects of different treatments on SOC sequestration. This study was conducted to determine the effects of different vegetation types on the concentration, storage, and stratification ratio (SR) of SOC in northeastern China. Five vegetation types, Leymus chinensis (LEY), Puccinellia tenuiflora (PUC), Echinochloa phyllopogon (ECH), saline seepweed (SUA), and Chloris virgata Swartz (CHL), were selected as treatments. Soil bulk density and SOC concentration were measured at 0 to 50 cm depth, and SOC storage and four SRs (SR1 [0–10:10–20 cm], SR2 [0–10:20–30 cm], SR3 [0–10:30–40 cm], and SR4 [0–10:40–50 cm]) were calculated under the five vegetation types. Results showed a pronounced reduction in SOC concentration with increasing soil depth. Vegetation types had significant effects on SOC concentration and storage. Under PUC, ECH, SUA, and CHL treatments, SOC concentrations (2.150, 1.068, 4.110, and 2.542 g kg−1, respectively) and storages (15.075, 7.273, 30.024, and 18.078 Mg ha−1, respectively) at 0–50 cm depth were lower than those under the LEY treatment. SR1 values were all < 2, while SR2, SR3, and SR4 values were all > 2 except for SR2 under ECH and SUA treatments. Vegetation types had significant effects on SR3 (p < 0.001) and SR4 (p = 0.040), while no significant differences were found for SR1 and SR2 due to the narrow range, with values of 0.248 and 0.553 for SR1 and SR2, respectively, among the vegetation types. These results indicated that the degraded soils have great potential to sequester organic carbon in northeastern China, and SR3 could be used as an effective index to show the changes in SOC concentration and soil quality in northeastern China.

Global environmental changes have been dramatic recently, exerting substantial effects on the structures and functions of terrestrial ecosystems, especially for the ecologically-fragile karst regions. Southwest China is one of the largest karst continuum belts around the world, which also contributes about 1/3 of terrestrial carbon sequestration to China. Therefore, a deep understanding of the long-term changes of vegetation across Southwest China over the past decades is critical. Relying on the long time series of Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Global Inventory Modeling and Mapping Studies normalized difference vegetation index (GIMMS NDVI3g) data set, this study examined the spatial and temporal patterns of vegetation conditions in Southwest China from 1982 to 2015, as well as their response to the environmental factors including temperature, precipitation and downward shortwave radiation. Multi-year mean NDVI showed that except the northwestern region, the NDVI of Southwest China was large, ranging from 0.5 to 0.8. Meanwhile, nearly 43.7% of the area experienced significant improvements in NDVI, whereas only 3.47% of the area exhibited significant decreases in NDVI. Interestingly, the NDVI in karst area increased more quickly with 1.035 × 10−3/a in comparison with that in the non-karst area with about 0.929 × 10−3/a. Further analysis revealed that temperature is the dominant environmental factor controlling the interannual changes in NDVI, accounting for 48.19% of the area, followed by radiation (3.71%) and precipitation (3.09%), respectively.
