Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have recently achieved sky-rocketed prominence in assisting various wireless communication scenarios due to their implicit characteristics like line-of-sight connectivity, three-dimensional mobility, on-demand deployment, and payload abilities. For realizing UAV-assisted communications in practical scenarios, one of the key challenges is the onboard power limitation of UAVs, which can affect their flight duration, maneuverability, and network lifetime. Exploiting energy harvesting (EH) techniques with UAV networks can improve operational time by addressing the UAV’s power constraints. In addition, UAVs can facilitate seamless connectivity for energy-constrained low-power devices in remote locations, disaster-struck areas, emergencies, and areas where human intervention is challenging and recharging or replacing batteries is problematic. In such scenarios, a low-altitude UAV, which flies flexibly, can serve as a radio-frequency (RF) energy transmitter to charge the nearby low-power devices efficiently and help enable their communications. Focusing on these aspects, this paper comprehensively surveys the current state-of-the-art EH techniques that can be utilized with UAV communications in various practical scenarios. Then, we highlight crucial challenges in integrating UAVs with prevailing wireless infrastructure and discuss different RF-EH receiver architectures that can be viable solutions for power-constrained UAV networks. Further, we show the channel modeling of UAV-assisted communications with EH and provide critical insights into the system performance. Besides, we offer an exhaustive review of recent works on RF-EH in UAV networks with next-generation paradigms and different problem-solving techniques/optimization methods. Finally, we suggest forthcoming trends and highlight open issues and future research directions.

Today’s power distribution system is changing to a power-electronics-enabled distribution system, especially with the increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs). To monitor and manage those electronic devices and DERs at the grid edge, the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) with two-way communications presents great potential. At present, extensive research explores the upstream communication from smart meters to electric utilities (e.g., meter reading) but few examine the downstream communication from the utilities to smart meters (e.g., meter pinging). This paper discusses the AMI two-way communication and its recent industrial practice in the U.S., especially for applying the smart meter pinging functionality to monitor grid-edge devices and DERs. This paper then develops the two-way communication model and the network calculus method to quantify the impact of the two-way communication on the AMI network. In the end, the proposed method is validated with ns-3 simulation using the modified 13-node test feeder and real-world feeder systems.

We consider a setup where a distributed set of sensors working cooperatively can estimate an unknown signal of interest, whereas any individual sensor cannot fulfil the task due to lack of necessary information diversity. This paper deals with these kinds of estimation and tracking problems and focuses on a class of simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA)-based consensus algorithms for the cases when the corrupted observations of sensors are transmitted between sensors with communication noise and the communication protocol has to satisfy a prespecified cost constraints on the network topology. Sufficient conditions are introduced to guarantee the stability of estimates obtained in this way, without resorting to commonly used but stringent conventional statistical assumptions about the observation noise such as randomness, independence, and zero mean. We derive an upper bound of the mean square error of the estimates in the problem of unknown time-varying parameters tracking under unknown but bounded observation errors and noisy communication channels. The result is illustrated by a practical application to the multi-sensor multi-target tracking problem.

Performance evaluation of the 802.11 MAC protocol is classically based on the decoupling assumption, which hypothesizes that the backoff processes at different nodes are independent. This decoupling assumption results from mean field convergence and is generally true in transient regime in the asymptotic sense (when the number of wireless nodes tends to infinity), but, contrary to widespread belief, may not necessarily hold in stationary regime. The issue is often related with the existence and uniqueness of a solution to a fixed point equation; however, it was also recently shown that this condition is not sufficient; in contrast, a sufficient condition is a global stability property of the associated ordinary differential equation. In this paper, we give a simple condition that establishes the asymptotic validity of the decoupling assumption for the homogeneous case (all nodes have the same parameters). We also discuss the heterogeneous and the differentiated service cases and formulate a new ordinary differential equation. We show that the uniqueness of a solution to the associated fixed point equation is not sufficient; we exhibit one case where the fixed point equation has a unique solution but the decoupling assumption is not valid in the asymptotic sense in stationary regime.

This paper is concerned with the event-triggered adaptive finite-time control problem for a class of switched cyber-physical systems (CPSs) subject to uncertain deception attacks. We deploy the finite time command filter to alleviate the possible explosion of complexity rendered by the virtual control signal's duplicative differentiation. To stabilize the target system with a guaranteed disturbance rejection performance index, a disturbance observer is constructed by using fuzzy logic systems (FLS) with the hope of estimating the unknown external disturbance. Furthermore, the Nussbaum gain is utilized to resist the unknown control efficiency generated by uncertain deception attacks. Based on the common Lyapunov function (CLF) method, sufficient conditions are derived to ensure that all signals in the closed-loop system are uniformly bounded at a finite time. Finally, the simulation example shows the validity and efficacy of the developed control method.
