Dr. María Ángeles Núñez Sánchez earned her BS in Biochemistry (2010) and PhD in Biomedicine (2016) from the University of Murcia, completing her thesis on the anticancer effects of urolithins at CEBAS-CSIC. She received her PhD with the highest honors: summa cum laude, International Mention, and the Extraordinary Doctoral Award (2017). In 2017, she joined the APC Microbiome Ireland (University College Cork) as part of the Bile Acid group and was later awarded a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (2018–2020). Her research focused on the role of bile acids in early gut development and later health. In 2020, she collaborated with the Center for Research in Vascular Biology on symbiotic strategies for preventing metabolic syndrome. Returning to Spain in late 2020, she joined the UMH-CSIC Neuroscience Institute to study microenvironment signaling in metastasis (AECC-funded). In 2022, she moved to the Biomedical Research Institute of Murcia (IMIB-PP), joining the Obesity, Diabetes and Metabolism Lab, where she studies microbiome-derived metabolites in metabolic disorders. In 2023, she received a “Stop Fuga de Cerebros” fellowship from Roche and secured funding as PI from the Fundación Séneca’s “Jóvenes Líderes en Investigación” program to explore the maternal–infant transmission of obesity risk. She currently holds a Miguel Servet tenure-track position (ISCIII), with research focused on microbiome-targeted nutritional strategies to prevent and manage metabolic diseases.
