Communication in industrial wireless networks necessitates reliability and precision. Besides, the existence of interference or traffic in the network must not affect the estimated network properties. Therefore, data packets have to be sent within a certain time frame and over a reliable connection. However, the working scenarios and the characteristics of the network itself make it vulnerable to node or link faults, which impact the transmission reliability and overall performance. This article aims to introduce a developed multipath routing model, which leads to cost-effective planning, low latency and high reliability of industrial wireless mesh networks, such as the WirelessHART networks. The multipath routing model has three primary paths, and each path has a backup node. The backup node stores the data transmitted by the parent node to grant communication continuity when primary nodes fail. The multipath routing model is developed based on optimal network planning and deployment algorithm. Simulations were conducted on a WirelessHART simulator using Network Simulator (NS2). The performance of the developed model is compared with the state-of-the-art. The obtained results reveal a significant reduction in the average network latency, low power consumption, better improvement in expected network lifetime, and enhanced packet delivery ratio which improve network reliability.

The placement of wireless mesh routers is a significant matter in enhancing the performance of a wireless mesh network. Therefore, it is essential that the mesh routers are optimally placed to guarantee strong connectivity and coverage for ensuring the best network accessibility. The importance of this issue has motivated the researchers to pursue more investigation on optimizing the networks’ performance. Various optimization algorithms have been developed in the literature to identify the trade-offs between network connectivity and client coverage. This work is aimed at implementing a novel application of Harris Hawk’s Optimization (HHO) algorithm to optimally place mesh routers in a wireless mesh network so as to improve connectivity and coverage. The HHO seeks optimal routers placement that leads to maximizing the connection between routers and increasing the number of covered clients. In this study, three network configurations are used with sizes of 40, 60, and 100 mesh routers. The simulation results are statistically analyzed and compared to other population-based algorithms such as Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA), Gray Wolf’s Optimization (GWO), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Moreover, the performance of HHO is compared with the state-of-the-art to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The simulation findings and statistical analysis confirm that the HHO outperforms the other algorithms in terms of network coverage and connectivity. The outcomes demonstrate that HHO can be considered an efficacious means to enhance the performance of wireless mesh networks (WMNs).

Smart Grid (S.G.) is a digitally enabled power grid with an automatic capability to control electricity and information between utility and consumer. S.G. data streams are heterogenous and possess a dynamic environment, whereas the existing machine learning methods are static and stand obsolete in such environments. Since these models cannot handle variations posed by S.G. and utilities with different generation modalities (D.G.M.), a model with adaptive features must comply with the requirements and fulfill the demand for new data, features, and modality. In this study, we considered two open sources and one real-world dataset and observed the behavior of ARIMA, ANN, and LSTM concerning changes in input parameters. It was found that no model observed the change in input parameters until it was manually introduced. It was observed that considered models experienced performance degradation and deterioration from 5 to 15% in terms of accuracy relating to parameter change. Therefore, to improve the model accuracy and adapt the parametric variations, which are dynamic in nature and evident in S.G. and D.G.M. environments. The study has proposed a novel adaptive framework to overcome the existing limitations in electrical load forecasting models.

This paper presents a miniaturized dual-polarized Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antenna with high isolation. The antenna meets the constraints of sub-6 GHz 5G and the smartphones’ X-band communications. A vertically polarized modified antipodal Vivaldi antenna and a horizontally polarized spiral antenna are designed and integrated, and then their performance is investigated. Three frequency bands of 3.8 GHz, 5.2 GHz, and 8.0 GHz are considered, and the proposed dual-polarized antenna is studied. High isolation of greater than 20 dB is obtained after integration of metamaterial elements, and without applying any other decoupling methods. The proposed triple-band metamaterial-based antenna has 1.6 GHz bandwidth (BW) (2.9 GHz–4.5 GHz), 13.5 dBi gain, and 98% radiation efficiency at 3.8 GHz. At 5.2 GHz it provides 1.2 GHz BW, 9.5 dBi gain, and 96% radiation efficiency. At 8.0 GHz it has 1 GHz BW, 6.75 dBi gain, and 92% radiation efficiency. Four antenna elements (with eight ports) were laid out orthogonally at the four corners of a mobile printed circuit board (PCB) to be utilized as a MIMO antenna for 5G communications. The performance of the MIMO antenna is examined and reported.
