In order to explore the influence of dip angles on the deformation and failure of a coal–rock combination, uniaxial compression experiments were carried out on a coal–rock combination with different dip angles, and the acoustic emissions (hereinafter referred to as AE) responses during loading were collected. Based on the damage mechanics theory and fractal theory, the fractal dimensions of different damage degrees were calculated. The results show that, with the increase in the inclination angle, the compressive strength and elastic modulus of the coal–rock combination gradually decreased, while the AE ringing count gradually increased first and then decreased. At the initial loading stage of the specimen, the greater the damage degree of the coal–rock combination under the same strain condition, the larger the value of its overall fractal dimension. The AE fractal dimension of the coal–rock combination increases gradually between 10% and 20% of the damage degree. It suddenly decreased between 50% and 60%, then increased slightly before gradually decreasing to the minimum between 80% and 100%. The sudden decrease in fractal dimension, a slight increase, and then a continuous decrease can be used as the precursor information for the instability and failure of the coal–rock combination.

A fractal realizes the quantitative characterization of complex and disordered mining fracture networks, and it is of great significance to grasp the fractal characteristics of rock movement law to guide mine production. To prevent the water-conducting fracture (WF) under the gullies from conducting the surface water body, and to realize the purpose of safe production and surface water body protection. The evolution of overburden fissures in the working face with shallow buried gulley landform and thick bedrock conditions is studied. The development height of water-conducting fracture (DHWF) is theoretically analyzed. The evolution characteristics of overlying fissures with different mining heights were observed by similarity simulation, and the observation results were analyzed by fractal theory. The results show that the main factor that determines the height of WF is mining height. The working face is mined at different mining heights, and the corresponding indexes such as the height of the WF, the area of the caving zone and the fractal dimension are related to engineering phenomena. In particular, the appearance and disappearance of the separation space correspond to the fractal dimension fluctuation phase. The safe mining technology under a gully water body, which mainly reduces mining height, is adopted, and the fissures of the working face are not connected to the surface water body after mining.

Roof-type rock burst (RTRB) frequently occurs in the hard, thick roof of working faces, which causes roadway failure, facility damage and even personnel casualties. Previous research results show that mining speed has obvious effects on the rock burst risk and many rock burst accidents are caused by an unreasonable mining speed. To provide a theoretical foundation for the determination of a reasonable mining speed in a specific working face subjected to RTRB, in this study, the key energy strata (KES) principle contraposing the RTRB was proposed, and the criterion of KES was determined by defining the energy release coefficient kc. On this basis, the energy accumulation characteristics of coal and energy release of surrounding rock were analyzed using FLAC3D numerical simulation. Accordingly, to assess the rock burst risk considering the mining speed effect, a new method was proposed and a new energy index Φvi was defined to divide rock burst risk with different mining speeds into four grades. To validate the availability of the KES principle and the new assessment method, they were adopted in a thick, hard roof working face. The application results indicate that the mining speed of 3.6 m/d obtained by the method meets the demands of safe and high-efficiency production.

The mechanism of strong mine pressure control in the initial mining and caving stages under multiple key strata (MKS) was studied by theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and field measurement in order to avoid the dynamic pressure accidents caused by the MKS breaking in interactions in the initial mining and caving stage. Panel 13103 (P13103) in the Shan Xi Jinshen Shaping Coal Mine was used sas the study site. The overlying structure and the breaking characteristics of the key strata were analyzed and the overlying structure model of longwall top-coal caving (LTC) under MKS was established. Reasonable initial mining heights and initial caving positions were determined and the spatial and temporal characteristics of ground pressure and roof structure of the working face in the mining process were obtained. The results show that, in the scheme of starting top-coal caving after the working face advanced 20 m, the support damage ratios were all greater than 50% with roof weighting, which is prone to induce prop crash accidents. The dynamic load formed by the second weighting was greater than first weighting under the MKS. The duration of mine pressure tended to be stable with fully developed caving zone heights. With the designed mining scheme, the safe and efficient mining of P13103 is guaranteed.

The coal pillar is an important structure to control the stability of the roadway surrounding rock and maintain the safety of underground mining activities. An unreasonable design of the coal pillar size can result in the failure of the surrounding rock structure or waste of coal resources. The northern Shaanxi mining area of China belongs to the shallow buried coal seam mining in the gully area, and the gully topography makes the bearing law of the coal pillar and the development law of the internal fracture more complicated. In this study, based on the geological conditions of the Longhua Mine 20202 working face, a PFC2D numerical model was established to study the damage characteristics of coal pillars under the different overlying strata base load ratios in the gentle terrain area and the different gully slope sections in the gully terrain area, and the coal pillar design strategy based on the fractal characteristics of the fractures was proposed to provide a reference for determining the width of the coal pillars in mines under similar geological conditions. The results show that the reliability of the mathematical equation between the overlying strata base load ratio and the fractal dimension of the fractures in the coal pillar is high, the smaller the overlying strata base load ratio is, the greater the damage degree of the coal pillar is, and the width of the coal pillar of 15 m under the condition of the actual overlying strata base load ratio (1.19) is more reasonable. Compared with the gentle terrain area, the damage degree of the coal pillar in the gully terrain area is larger, in which the fractal dimension of the fracture in the coal pillar located below the gully bottom is the smallest, and the coal pillar in the gully terrain should be set as far as possible to make the coal pillar located below the gully bottom, so as to ensure the stability of the coal pillar.
