Q-learning is an off-policy reinforcement learning technique which has as main advantage the possibility of obtaining an optimal policy interacting with an unknown model environment. This work proposes a parallel fixed-point Q-learning algorithm architecture implemented on field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) focusing on optimizing the system processing time. Convergence results are presented and the processing time and occupied area were analyzed for different states and actions sizes scenarios and various fixed-point formats. Studies concerning the accuracy of the Q-learning technique response and resolution error associated with a decrease in the number of bits were also carried out for the hardware implementation. Architecture implementation details were featured. The entire project was developed using the System Generator platform (Xilinx), with a Virtex-6 xc6vcx240t-1ff1156 as the target FPGA.

COVID-19, the illness caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus belonging to the Coronaviridade family, a single-strand positive-sense RNA genome, has been spreading around the world and has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization. On 17 January 2022, there were more than 329 million cases, with more than 5.5 million deaths. Although COVID-19 has a low mortality rate, its high capacities for contamination, spread, and mutation worry the authorities, especially after the emergence of the Omicron variant, which has a high transmission capacity and can more easily contaminate even vaccinated people. Such outbreaks require elucidation of the taxonomic classification and origin of the virus (SARS-CoV-2) from the genomic sequence for strategic planning, containment, and treatment of the disease. Thus, this work proposes a high-accuracy technique to classify viruses and other organisms from a genome sequence using a deep learning convolutional neural network (CNN). Unlike the other literature, the proposed approach does not limit the length of the genome sequence. The results show that the novel proposal accurately distinguishes SARS-CoV-2 from the sequences of other viruses. The results were obtained from 1557 instances of SARS-CoV-2 from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and 14,684 different viruses from the Virus-Host DB. As a CNN has several changeable parameters, the tests were performed with forty-eight different architectures; the best of these had an accuracy of 91.94 ± 2.62% in classifying viruses into their realms correctly, in addition to 100% accuracy in classifying SARS-CoV-2 into its respective realm, Riboviria. For the subsequent classifications (family, genera, and subgenus), this accuracy increased, which shows that the proposed architecture may be viable in the classification of the virus that causes COVID-19.

This work proposes an implementation of the SHA-256, the most common blockchain hash algorithm, on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) to improve processing capacity and power saving in Internet of Things (IoT) devices to solve security and privacy issues. This implementation presents a different approach than other papers in the literature, using clustered cores executing the SHA-256 algorithm in parallel. Details about the proposed architecture and an analysis of the resources used by the FPGA are presented. The implementation achieved a throughput of approximately 1.4 Gbps for 16 cores on a single FPGA. Furthermore, it saved dynamic power, using almost 1000 times less compared to previous works in the literature, making this proposal suitable for practical problems for IoT devices in blockchain environments. The target FPGA used was the Xilinx Virtex 6 xc6vlx240t-1ff1156.

This paper presents a fuzzy logic-based approach for replica scaling in a Kubernetes environment, focusing on integrating Edge Computing. The proposed FHS (Fuzzy-based Horizontal Scaling) system was compared to the standard Kubernetes scaling mechanism, HPA (Horizontal Pod Autoscaler). The comparison considered resource consumption, the number of replicas used, and adherence to latency Service-Level Agreements (SLAs). The experiments were conducted in an environment simulating Edge Computing infrastructure, with virtual machines used to represent edge nodes and traffic generated via JMeter. The results demonstrate that FHS achieves a reduction in CPU consumption, uses fewer replicas under the same stress conditions, and exhibits more distributed SLA latency violation rates compared to HPA. These results indicate that FHS offers a more efficient and customizable solution for replica scaling in Kubernetes within Edge Computing environments, contributing to both operational efficiency and service quality.

Autonomous navigation in mobile robots represents a significant challenge in unknown and dynamic environments, where the need to avoid obstacles and find safe trajectories in real-time requires efficient solutions. This work presents the MetaHeuristic Real-Time Safe Navigation (MHRTSN) strategy, which combines potential fields with population-based meta-heuristics to optimize trajectory planning and navigation in such environments. The MHRTSN strategy was tested through a series of simulations using different static and dynamic scenarios, comparing the performance of MHRTSN-GA and MHRTSN-PSO versions in terms of displacement, distance traveled, and CPU and clock times. The results demonstrate that both versions provide sub-optimal solutions, with MHRTSN-PSO showing superior performance in terms of required processing time and better convergence compared to MHRTSN-GA when using a small number of individuals. Comparisons with other approaches in the literature showed that MHRTSN generated paths of equivalent length to those of the literature, but in a safer manner. Thus, the proposed approach offers an efficient and safe solution for autonomous navigation in mobile robots, contributing to the advancement of this field in real-world applications. Future work may explore the application of the strategy in physical robotic systems and more complex environments.

Deep learning techniques, such as deep neural networks (DNNs), have proven highly effective in addressing various automatic modulation classification challenges. However, their computational demands pose a significant hurdle for real-time modulation detection. To tackle this issue, a novel training strategy is proposed in this study. This strategy aims to minimize both pruning and quantization losses during the training of compressed models, thereby reducing the computational complexity of DNNs. The effectiveness of this approach was demonstrated through experiments involving the classification of 24 modulations: OOK, ASK4, ASK8, BPSK, QPSK, PSK8, PSK16, PSK32, APSK16, APSK32, APSK64, APSK128, QAM16, QAM32, QAM64, QAM128, QAM256, AM SSB WC, AM SSB SC, AM DSB WC, AM DSB SC, FM, GMSK and OQPS. Remarkably, the results showed a substantial reduction in both DNN weights and operations, while maintaining a high level of classification accuracy. By streamlining the computational demands of deep learning models, this strategy opens up new possibilities for real-time modulation detection applications, particularly in scenarios where computational resources are limited. This research represents a significant advancement towards the practical deployment of deep learning in modulation classification systems, paving the way for enhanced efficiency and performance in wireless communication technologies.
