Soil degradation has exacerbated the gap between crop yield and increasing food demands, and unreasonable field management is one of the main reasons for soil degradation. As a classic orchard soil management mode, living grass mulch can effectively change the hydrothermal environment and soil physicochemical properties of the ‘soil–vegetation–atmosphere’ microclimate of apple orchards. However, these improvement effects are mainly affected by climatic conditions, mulch methods, vegetation varieties and continuous grass-growing years. To evaluate the different effects of living grass mulch and the main influencing factors on soil physicochemical properties of apple orchards in China, in this study, we conducted a meta-analysis using data from 53 peer-reviewed publications to carry out soil quality assessment. The results showed that compared with clear tillage, continuous living grass mulch in apple orchards could improve soil function and performance by about 56% and increase soil enzyme activities by 10–120%, on average, whereas the soil organic matter under the effect of artificial grass and natural grass significantly increased by 29.6% and 14.6%, respectively. Artificial grass in temperate and warm, temperate, semi-humid climate regions had a greater overall improvement effect on the soil physicochemical environment than natural grass. Clover was found to be the most suitable for planting in apple orchards in temperate, semi-humid climate regions, whereas both clover and ryegrass were the best choices in warm, temperate, semi-humid climate regions. The interaction effects of different soil physicochemical properties in apple orchards in warm, temperate, semi-humid climate regions were greater than those in warm, temperate, arid climates and temperate, semi-humid climate regions. The response sensitivity of soil organic matter, organic carbon, urease, catalase, sucrose and cellulase to the living grass mulch effect of apple orchards was greater than that of other soil properties.

In order to determine the effects of different water-saving irrigation techniques on physiological growth, farmland microclimate, and yield of cotton (Gossypium Spp.), a two-year field experiment was carried out in an oasis area of Northwest China, and three irrigation methods were tested, including on-film irrigation (T1), under-film drip irrigation (T2), and automatic irrigation (T3). The results showed that the relative humidity, plant height, leaf area, stem thick, and photosynthetic index with the T3 treatment were significantly higher than those with T2 and T1. The air and soil temperature with T3 (except seedling stage) were considerably lower than those with T2 and T1. According to the fitting and statistical analysis of each index and yield, except for air and soil temperature, the other indices were positively correlated with yield. Based on the analysis of each index, the T3 treatment had the most significant regulatory effect on cotton’s physiological growth and farmland microclimate. Compared with T1, the irrigation amounts of T2 and T3 decreased by 16.43% and 25.90%, but the yield increased by 38.96% and 46.28%, respectively. The automatic irrigation strategy showed significant advantages in water saving and yield increase, which could provide some reference for cotton drip irrigation in similarly arid areas.

Model-based simulation of farmland evapotranspiration and crop growth facilitates precise monitoring of crop and farmland dynamics with high efficiency, real-time responsiveness, and continuity. However, there are still significant limitations in using crop models to simulate the dynamic process of evapotranspiration and cotton growth in mulched drip-irrigated cotton fields under different irrigation gradients. The SWAP crop growth model effectively simulates crop growth. However, the original SWAP model lacks a dedicated module to consider the impact of mulching on cotton field evapotranspiration and cotton dry matter mass. Therefore, in this study, the source codes of the soil moisture, evapotranspiration, and crop growth modules of the SWAP model were improved. The evapotranspiration and cotton growth data of the mulched drip-irrigated cotton fields under three irrigation treatments (W1 = 3360 m3·hm−2, W2 = 4200 m3·hm−2, and W3 = 5040 m3·hm−2) in 2023 and 2024 at the Xinjiang Modern Water-saving Irrigation Key Experimental Station of the Corps were used to verify the simulation accuracy of the improved SWAP model. Research shows the following: (1) The average relative errors of the simulated evapotranspiration, leaf area index, and dry matter weight of cotton in the improved SWAP crop growth model are all <20% compared with the measured values. The root means square errors of the three treatments (W1, W2, and W3) ranged from 0.85 to 1.38 mm, from 0.03 to 0.18 kg·hm−2, and 55.01 to 69 kg·hm−2, respectively. The accuracy of the improved model in simulating evapotranspiration and cotton growth in the mulched cotton field increased by 37.49% and 68.25%, respectively. (2) The evapotranspiration rate of cotton fields is positively correlated with the irrigation water volume and is most influenced by meteorological factors such as temperature and solar radiation. During the flowering stage, evapotranspiration accounted for 62.83%, 62.09%, 61.21%, 26.46%, 40.01%, and 38.8% of the total evapotranspiration. Therefore, the improved SWAP model can effectively simulate the evaporation and transpiration of the mulched drip-irrigated cotton fields in the Manas River Basin. This study provides a scientific basis for the digital simulation of mulched farmland in the arid regions of Northwest China.

A two-year experiment was established in the northern Xinjiang to investigate the effects of autumn plowing methods on nitrate nitrogen accumulation, spring-sown soil conditions and cotton emergence rate, and to explore the response relationship between soil water, heat and nitrate nitrogen. The experiment included five autumn plowing treatments, namely, plough tillage (FG), no-tillage (MG), ridge and furrow alternation (LG), plough tillage with straw mulch (FJ) and plough tillage with activated charcoal mulch (FH). The results showed that both FH and FJ treatments were beneficial to promote the nitrate-nitrogen accumulation in topsoil, while FG, MG and LG treatments aggravated the nitrate nitrogen leaching in topsoil. During the freezing period, FH and FJ treatments were beneficial to reduce soil heat loss and facilitate the coordinated upward migration of soil water and nitrate nitrogen. In the thawing period, FH and FJ treatments favored suppressing the synergistic downward transport of soil water and nitrate-nitrogen and motivated the synergistic upward migration of heat and nitrate nitrogen in deep soil. Binary regression analysis suggested that the interaction between water, heat and nitrate nitrogen under FH and FJ treatments showed a highly significant correlation. FH and FJ treatments showed obvious advantages in regulating soil conditions and optimizing soil water, heat and nitrate nitrogen co-transport mechanism. During the spring sowing period, the FH and FJ treatments increased the average soil temperature by 0.99°C and 1.29°C, and the average soil moisture content by 6.01% and 8.70%, and the average soil nitrate content by 10.20 mg/kg and 10.47 mg/kg, in the 0-25 cm soil layer, respectively. FH and FJ treatments significantly grew the emergence rate of cotton, which can be used as the main autumn tillage strategies in arid areas of northern Xinjiang.
