The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is a crucial research field spawned by the Internet of Things (IoT). IIoT links all types of industrial equipment through the network; establishes data acquisition, exchange, and analysis systems; and optimizes processes and services, so as to reduce cost and enhance productivity. The introduction of edge computing in IIoT can significantly reduce the decision-making latency, save bandwidth resources, and to some extent, protect privacy. This paper outlines the research progress concerning edge computing in IIoT. First, the concepts of IIoT and edge computing are discussed, and subsequently, the research progress of edge computing is discussed and summarized in detail. Next, the future architecture from the perspective of edge computing in IIoT is proposed, and its technical progress in routing, task scheduling, data storage and analytics, security, and standardization is analyzed. Furthermore, we discuss the opportunities and challenges of edge computing in IIoT in terms of 5G-based edge communication, load balancing and data offloading, edge intelligence, as well as data sharing security. Finally, we introduce some typical application scenarios of edge computing in IIoT, such as prognostics and health management (PHM), smart grids, manufacturing coordination, intelligent connected vehicles (ICV), and smart logistics.

Owing to the explosive growth of requirements of rapid emergency communication response and accurate observation services, airborne communication networks (ACNs) have received much attention from both industry and academia. ACNs are subject to heterogeneous networks that are engineered to utilize satellites, high-altitude platforms (HAPs), and low-altitude platforms (LAPs) to build communication access platforms. Compared to terrestrial wireless networks, ACNs are characterized by frequently changed network topologies and more vulnerable communication connections. Furthermore, ACNs have the demand of the seamless integration of heterogeneous networks such that the network quality-of-service (QoS) can be improved. Thus, designing mechanisms and protocols for ACNs poses many challenges. To solve these challenges, extensive research has been conducted. The objective of this special issue is to disseminate the contributions in the field of ACNs. To present this special issue with the necessary background and offer an overall view on this field, three key areas of ACNs are covered. Specifically, this paper covers LAP-based communication networks, HAPbased communication networks, and integrated ACNs. For each area, this paper addresses the particular issues and reviews major mechanisms. This paper also points out future research directions and challenges.

As urban traffic condition is diverse and complicated, applying reinforcement learning to reduce traffic congestion becomes one of the hot and promising topics. Especially, how to coordinate the traffic light controllers of multiple intersections is a key challenge for multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL). Most existing MARL studies are based on traditional Q-learning, but unstable environment leads to poor learning in the complicated and dynamic traffic scenarios. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-agent recurrent deep deterministic policy gradient (MARDDPG) algorithm based on Deterministic Policy Gradient algorithm for traffic light control (TLC) in vehiclar networks. Specifically, the centralized learning in each critic network enables each agent to estimate the policies of other agents in the decision-making process and each agent can coordinate with each other, alleviating the problem of poor learning performance caused by environmental instability. The decentralized execution enables each agent to make decisions independently. We share parameter in actor networks to speed up training process and reduce the memory footprint. The addition of LSTM is beneficial to alleviate the instability of the environment caused by partial observable state. We utilize surveillance cameras and vehicular networks to collect status information for each intersection. Unlike previous work, we have not only considered the vehicle but also considered the pedestrians waiting to pass through the intersection. Moreover, we also set different priorities for buses and ordinary vehicles. The experimental results in a vehicular network show that our method can run stably in various scenarios and coordinate multiple intersections, which significantly reduces vehicle congestion and pedestrian congestion.

This paper investigates the application of non-orthogonal multiple access in millimeter-Wave communications (mmWave-NOMA). Particularly, we consider downlink transmission with a hybrid beamforming structure. A user grouping algorithm is first proposed according to the channel correlations of the users. Whereafter, a joint hybrid beamforming and power allocation problem is formulated to maximize the achievable sum rate, subject to a minimum rate constraint for each user. To solve this non-convex problem with high-dimensional variables, we first obtain the solution of power allocation under arbitrary fixed hybrid beamforming, which is divided into intra-group power allocation and inter-group power allocation. Then, given arbitrary fixed analog beamforming, we utilize the approximate zero-forcing method to design the digital beamforming to minimize the inter-group interference. Finally, the analog beamforming problem with the constant-modulus constraint is solved with a proposed boundary-compressed particle swarm optimization algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed joint approach, including user grouping, hybrid beamforming and power allocation, outperforms the state-of-the-art schemes and the conventional mmWave orthogonal multiple access system in terms of achievable sum rate and energy efficiency.

With the rapid development of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, location-based services have been widely applied in the construction of smart cities. Satellite-based location services have been utilized in outdoor environments, but they are not suitable for indoor technology due to the absence of global positioning system (GPS) signal. Therefore, many indoor localization technologies and systems have emerged by utilizing many other signals. In particular, fingerprinting localization has recently garnered attention because its promising performance. In this work, we aim to study recent indoor localization technologies and systems based on various fingerprints, which use machine learning and intelligent algorithms. We also present the architecture of intelligent localization. The development of indoor localization technology should have the ability of self-adaptation and self-learning in the future. And the architecture shows how to make localization become more “smart” by advanced techniques. The state-of-the-art localization systems’ working principles are summarized and compared in terms of their localization accuracy, latency, energy consumption, complexity, and robustness. We also discuss the challenges of existing indoor localization technologies, potential solutions to these challenges, and possible improvement measures.

Industry 4.0 aims to create a modern industrial system by introducing technologies such as cloud computing, intelligent robotics and wireless sensor networks. In this paper we consider the multi-channel access and task offloading problem in mobile edge computing (MEC) enabled industry 4.0, and describe this problem in multi-agent environment. To solve this problem, we propose a novel multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL) scheme. The solution enables edge devices (EDs) to cooperate with each other, which can significantly reduce computation delay and improve channel access success rate. Extensive simulation results with different system parameters reveal that the proposed scheme could reduce computation delay by 33.38% and increase the channel access success rate by 14.88% and channel utilization by 3.24% compared to the traditional single agent reinforcement learning method.
