The North China agro–pastoral zone is a large, ecologically fragile zone in the arid and semi-arid regions. Quantitative remote sensing inversion of soil organic carbon (SOC) in this region can facilitate understanding of the current status of degraded land restoration and provide data support for carbon cycling research in the region. Deep learning (DNN) for SOC inversion has been W.a hot topic over the past decade, but there have been few studies at the regional scale in the arid and semi-arid zones. In this study, a DNN model with five hidden layers and five skip connections was established using 644 spatially distributed SOC samples and Landsat 8 OLI imagery. The model was compared with the random forest algorithm in terms of generalization ability. The main conclusions were as follows: 1. The DNN algorithm can establish a high-precision SOC inversion model (R2 = 0.52, RMSE = 0.7), with 90% of errors concentrated in the range of −2.5 to 2.5 kg·C/m2; 2. the Boruta variable-screening algorithm can effectively improve the model accuracy of the random forest algorithm, but due to the DNN’s better ability to mine hidden information in the data, the improvement effect on the DNN model accuracy is limited; 3. the SOC samples in arid and semi-arid areas are highly positively skewed, with a significant impact on the modeling accuracy of DNN, and conversion is required to obtain a model with better generalization ability; and 4. in arid and semi-arid regions, SOC has a weak correlation with vegetation indices but a stronger correlation with temperature, elevation, and aridity. This study established a reliable deep learning model for SOC density in a large arid and semi-arid region, providing a reference and framework for the establishment of SOC inversion models in other regions.

The study of spatiotemporal variation and driving forces of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is conducive to regional ecosystem protection and natural resource management. Based on the 1982–2022 GIMMS NDVI data and 26 influencing variables, by using the Theil-Sen median slope analysis, Mann-Kendall (M − K) test method and GeoDetector model, we analyzed the spatial and temporal characteristics of vegetation cover and the driving factors of its spatial differentiation in the northern foothills of the Yinshan Mountains in Inner Mongolia. The NDVI showed a significantly increasing trend during 1982–2022, with a growth rate of 0.0091 per decade. It is further predicted that future change in NDVI will continue the 1982–2022 trend, and sustainable improvement will dominate in the future; however, 17.69 % of vegetation will degrade, that is, NDVI will degrade instead of improvement. The spatial distribution of the NDVI in the northern foothills of the study area was generally characterized by high in the east and low in the west. Annual precipitation (Pre), evapotranspiration (Evp), relative humidity (Rhu) and sunshine hours (Ssd) had >70 % explanatory power (73.5, 79.9, 79.0, and 74.9 %, respectively). The explanatory power of edaphic factors was >30 %, whereas anthropogenic and topographic factors had little influence on the spatial variation of NDVI, with an explanatory power of <30 %. Thus, climatic factors were the dominant factors influencing the spatial variability of NDVI in the study area. The results of the interaction detector analysis showed nonlinear strengthening for any two factors, and the interaction between Rhu and barometric pressure had the highest explanatory power. There were optimal ranges or characteristics of each factor that promoted vegetation growth. This study investigated the differences in the explanatory power of different factors on the NDVI and the optimal range of individual factors to promote vegetation growth, which can provide a basis for the development of vegetation resource management programs.

Revealing the spatial dynamics of vegetation change in Chongqing and their driving mechanisms is of major value to regional ecological management and conservation. Using several data sets, including the SPOT Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), meteorological, soil, digital elevation model (DEM), human population density and others, combined with trend analysis, stability analysis, and geographic detectors, we studied the pattern of temporal and spatial variation in the NDVI and its stability across Chongqing from 2000 to 2019, and quantitatively analyzed the relative contribution of 18 drivers (natural or human variables) that could influence vegetation dynamics. Over the 20-year period, we found that Chongqing region’s NDVI had an annual average value of 0.78, and is greater than 0.7 for 93.52% of its total area. Overall, the NDVI increased at a rate of 0.05/10 year, with 81.67% of the areas undergoing significant expansion, primarily in the metropolitan areas of Chongqing’s Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGR) and Wuling Mountain Area (WMA). The main factors influencing vegetation change were human activities, climate, and topography, for which the most influential variables respectively were night light brightness (NLB, 51.9%), annual average air temperature (TEM, 47%), and elevation (ELE, 44.4%). Furthermore, we found that interactions between differing types of factors were stronger than those arising between similar ones; of all pairwise interaction types tested, 92.9% of them were characterized by two-factor enhancement. The three most powerful interactions detected were those for NLB ∩ TEM (62.7%), NLB ∩ annual average atmospheric pressure (PRS, 62.7%), and NLB ∩ ELE (61.9%). Further, we identified the most appropriate kind or range of key elements shaping vegetation development and dynamics. Altogether, our findings can serve as a timely scientific foundation for developing a vegetative resource management strategy for the Yangtze River basin that duly takes into account local climate, terrain, and human activity.

Northern China’s agropastoral ecotone has been a key area of desertification control for decades, and digital maps of its soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks are needed to reveal the gaps between the actual SOC levels and baseline to support land degradation neutrality (LDN) under the Sustainable Development Goals. However, reliable soil information is scarce, and accurate prediction is hindered by the fragmented landscape, which is a dominant characteristic of desertified land. To improve the patchiness identification and accuracy of SOC prediction, we conducted field surveys and collected low-altitude aerial images along the desertification degrees (severe and extremely severe, moderate, slight) in the Horqin Sandy Land. Linear regressions were performed on the relationships between the normalized difference vegetation index and the fractional vegetation cover (FVC) extracted from aerial images, and regression kriging was applied to predict SOC stocks based on the soil-forming factors (vegetation, climate, and topography). Our prediction and cross-validation showed that the fragmented structure and prediction accuracy of SOC stocks were both greatly improved for desertified land. The FVC (R2c = 0.94) and evapotranspiration (R2c = 0.86) had significant positive effects on SOC stocks, respectively, with indirect and direct causal relationships. Our results could provide soil information with better patchiness and accuracy to help policymakers determine the future LDN status in this fragmented desertification landscape. As drone technology becomes more available, it will fully support digital mapping of soil properties.

Basic education is a foundation-laying project of national quality education. Improving the ecological carrying level of basic education is of great practical significance to the coordinated and sustainable development of regional society and economy. Based on the panel data of Chongqing from 2011 to 2017, combined with the DPSIR theoretical model, a comprehensive evaluation index system was conducted, and the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of ecological carrying capacity of county education in Chongqing was explored by using statistical analysis and spatial analysis methods. The multiple linear regression model was used to analyze differences in the impact of economic structure adjustment on the ecological carrying capacity of county education. It was found that the level of ecological carrying capacity of county education in Chongqing showed a steady upward trend in terms of time sequence, and all the five subsystems showed the characteristics of steady development, but the influence of each subsystem on the overall carrying capacity was different. From the formation mechanism, Chongqing’s educational ecological carrying capacity is the result of a multi-factor complex system, and there are obvious differences in the influencing factors at different development stages. Therefore, it is necessary to narrow the regional differences of education ecological carrying capacity, promote the coordinated development of education among regions, and take multiple measures to effectively ensure the high quality and sustainable development of county education in Chongqing.
