Partial discharge (PD) in electrical equipment is one of the major causes of electrical insulation failures. Fast and accurate positioning of PD sources allows timely elimination of insulation faults. In order to improve the accuracy of PD detection, this paper mainly studies the direction of arrival (DOA) estimation of PD ultrasonic signals based on a step-by-step over-complete dictionary. The simulation results show that the step by step dictionary can improve the operation speed and save signal processing time. Firstly, a step-by-step over-complete dictionary covering all the angles of space is established according to the expression of the steering vector for a matching pursuit direction finding algorithm, which can save computation time. Then, the step-by-step complete dictionary is set up according to the direction vector, and the atomic precision is respectively set to 10°, 1° and 0.1°. The matching pursuit algorithm is used to carry out the sparse representation of the received data X and select the optimal atom from the step-by-step complete dictionary, and the angle information contained in atoms is DOA of the PD sources. According to the direction finding results, combined with the installation location of the ultrasonic array sensor, the spatial position of a partial discharge source can be obtained using the three platform array location method. Finally, a square ultrasonic array sensor is developed, and an experimental platform for the ultrasonic array detection of partial discharges is set up and used to carry out an experimental study. The results show that the DOA estimation method based on a step-by-step over-complete dictionary can improve the direction finding precision, thereby increasing the subsequent positioning accuracy, and the spatial position estimation error of the PD source obtained under laboratory conditions is about 5 cm, making this a feasible method.

The uncertainty of the evaluation information is likely to affect the accuracy of the evaluation, when conducting a health evaluation of a power transformer. A multilevel health assessment method for power transformers is proposed in view of the three aspects of indicator criterion uncertainty, weight uncertainty, and fusion uncertainty. Firstly, indicator selection is conducted through the transformer guidelines and engineering experience to establish a multilevel model of transformers that can reflect the defect type and defect location. Then, a Gaussian cloud model is used to solve the uncertainty of the indicator criterion boundary. Based on association rules, AHP, and variable weights, the processed weights are calculated from the update module to obtain comprehensive weights, which overcomes the uncertainty of the weights. Improved DSmT theory is used for multiple evidence fusion to solve the high conflict and uncertainty problems in the fusion process. Finally, through actual case analysis, the defect type, defect location, and overall state of the transformer of the device are obtained. By comparing with many defect cases in a case-study library, the evaluation accuracy rate is found to reach 96.21, which verifies the practicability and efficiency of the method.

To improve adaptability, feature resolution, and identification accuracy when diagnosing mechanical faults in an on-load tap changer (OLTC) of a transformer, in the present research, wavelet packet energy entropy is used to describe the information comprising vibration signal in the switch process of an OLTC, and a fuzzy weighted least squares support vector machine (CSA-fuzzy weighted LSSVM) model based on the cuckoo search algorithm is proposed to identify mechanical fault types. Specifically, according to the different importance of the sample data in different periods, the idea of fuzzy weighting of training samples is proposed. The cuckoo search algorithm is used to optimise regularisation parameters, kernel function width, and weight control factor of CSA-fuzzy weighted LSSVM. Finally, the real experimental platform for typical mechanical faults of an OLTC is established, and the vibration signals of several typical mechanical faults under different degrees of fatigue are obtained. The results show that the new method achieves a higher accuracy rate of fault identification compared with other common methods. It can better deal with small sample and nonlinear prediction problems and shows higher fitting accuracy than CSA-LSSVM, single LSSVM, and radial basis neural network methods and is thus better suited for mechanical fault diagnosis in OLTCs. This paper presents a new intelligent diagnosis scheme for mechanical faults of on-load tap changers, which can achieve noninterruption and nonintrusive detection. The proposed diagnosis method would change the traditional diagnosis method of the on-load tap changer and improves the power supply quality and the detection efficiency under the premise of ensuring the safety of the staff.

This paper investigates the progressive loss of winding clamping pressure resulted from thermal aging in power transformers. Firstly, out-of-plane stress-strain characteristics of aging pressboards are investigated experimentally and relationship between mechanical properties of pressboards and aging hours is established accordingly. Then, a thermal-mechanical model is built to correlate the aging time with temperature based on the first-order reaction kinetics. Based on the above investigations, the correlation between temperature and mechanical properties of pressboards is obtained and the progressive loss of clamping pressure is predicted. The results show that with the progressive softening of pressboards from aging, the clamping pressure drops linearly under 60°C and nonlinearly over 60°C. The remaining clamping pressure of a transformer winding with 30 years’ service history is only 80.12% and 51.59% of its initial pressure under 50°C and 60°C, respectively.
Acetylene detection plays an important role in fault diagnosis of power transformers. However, the available dissolved gas analysis (DGA) techniques have always relied on bulky instruments and are time-consuming. Herein, a high-performance acetylene sensor was fabricated on a microhotplate chip using In2O3 as the sensing material. To achieve high sensing response to acetylene, Pd–Ag core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized and used as catalysts. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image clearly shows that the Ag shell is deposited on one face of the cubic Pd nanoseeds. By loading the Pd–Ag bimetallic catalyst onto the surface of In2O3 sensing material, the acetylene sensor has been fabricated for acetylene detection. Due to the high catalytic performance of Pd–Ag bimetallic nanoparticles, the microhotplate sensor has a high response to acetylene gas, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 10 ppb. In addition to high sensitivity, the fabricated microhotplate sensor exhibits satisfactory selectivity, good repeatability, and fast response to acetylene. The high performance of the microhotplate sensor for acetylene gas indicates the application potential of trace acetylene detection in power transformer fault diagnosis.
Transformer load is a key factor influencing its aging and service life. Accurately predicting load trends is crucial for assisting load redistribution. This study proposes a hybrid model called RIME-VMD-TCN-iTransformer to forecast the trend of transformer load. In this model, RIME (Randomized Improved Marine Predators Algorithm) is employed to enhance decomposition stability, VMD (Variational Mode Decomposition) is used to address the non-stationary characteristics of the load sequence, TCN (Temporal Convolutional Network) extracts local temporal dependencies, and iTransformer (Inverted Transformer) captures global inter-variable correlations. First, the variational mode decomposition algorithm is applied to mitigate the non-stationary characteristics of the signal, followed by the RIME to further enhance the orderliness of the intrinsic mode functions. Subsequently, the TCN-iTransformer model is utilized to predict each intrinsic mode function individually, and the prediction results of all intrinsic mode functions are reconstructed to obtain the final forecast. The findings indicate that the intrinsic mode functions obtained through RIME-VMD exhibit no spectral aliasing and can decompose abrupt time-series signals into stable and regular frequency components. Compared to other hybrid models, the proposed model demonstrates superior responsiveness to changes in time-series trends and achieves the lowest prediction error across various transformer capacity scenarios. These results highlight the model’s superior accuracy and generalization capability in handling abrupt signals, underscoring its potential for preventing unexpected transformer events.
