Introduction: Mycoplasma pneumoniae is regarded as an involved factor in refractory asthma exacerbations. The link between Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection and asthma is not fully understood, particularly regarding clinical and paraclinical characteristics. Objectives: To determine the frequency of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection in asthmatic children, identify clinical and paraclinical characteristics along with clinical management in children aged 6 to 15 years at Can Tho Children's Hospital, Vietnam.Method: From March 2019 to April 2021, 124 patients participated in a cross-sectional study that was done. Mycoplasma pneumoniae was detected using an immunoglobulin N (IgM) serology test. Results: Mycoplasma pneumoniae-IgM serology was positive in 32.3% asthmatic children. IgM-positive individuals had significantly greater percentages of accessory respiratory muscle contraction, coarse crackles, fever, and increased heart rate. Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection occurred in 42.3% of children who were hospitalized for the first time and had asthma diagnosis. Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection and the severity of acute asthma exacerbations had a positive association (p<0.05). A longer hospital stay (6.74±1.91 days) and a higher exacerbation recurrence rate (32.4%) were observed in the IgM-positive group (p<0.05). Conclusions: Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections were highly prevalent in asthmatic children. Severity of acute asthma exacerbations, first-time asthma diagnosis, and recurrence of asthma exacerbation were significantly associated with Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection.

Background: Low lactase levels in Asian children appear to be genetically determined or rotavirus-induced gastroenteritis. Consuming lactose -free formula in children with acute gastroenteritis may shorten diarrhea's duration and increase weight gain. This study aims to determine whether lactose -free milk will change the duration of diarrhea and weight gain in Vietnamese children aged 2-24 months with acute gastroenteritis. Materials and methods: A randomized control trial was performed on 66 children under 24 months of age with acute gastroenteritis at the Gastroenterology Department of Can Tho Children's Hospital. In adjunction to oral rehydration solution, they received either a lactose -free formula (n=33) or a lactose -containing formula (n=33). Outcome measures: Diarrhea duration, weight gain, treatment failure, and days of hospitalization were all studied. Results: A total of 66 children participated in this trial, with a mean age of 13.4 +/- 5.1 months, and 38 participants (57.6%) were male. There were no significant differences between the lactose -free formula group and the lactose -containing formula group in the duration of diarrhea (2.2 +/- 0.8 days versus 2.4 +/- 0.9 days; P=0.321), percentage of weight gain (1.96 [IQR:1.35-2.36] percent vs. 2.29 [IQR:1.81-2.40] percent; P=0.131), treatment failure rate (33.3% vs. 36.4%; P= 0.796), and days of hospitalization (5.8 +/- 1.7 vs. 6.5 +/- 2.5 days; P=0.158). Conclusions: It may not be necessary to use lactose -free milk routinely in Vietnamese children under 24 months with acute gastroenteritis as the duration of diarrhea, weight change, treatment failure rates, and hospital stay are similar to those of children fed lactose -containing milk.

Poorly controlled pediatric asthma increases morbidity, reduces quality of life, and raises healthcare use. Caregiver education on asthma and medication use is essential for control. In Vietnam, pediatric asthma services are centralized at tertiary centers, limiting access for many families. Telemedicine may help bridge these gaps. To evaluate the effectiveness of telemedicine education on asthma control in children with uncontrolled asthma and its impact on caregiver knowledge, attitudes, and children's MDI technique. We conducted a pragmatic randomized clinical trial among children aged 4-16 years with uncontrolled asthma. Participants were randomized 1:1, stratified by age and sex, to receive either a structured educational video call or a brief scheduling call. Changes in C-ACT/ACT scores, caregiver knowledge, caregiver attitudes, and children's MDI technique were compared between groups. A multivariable generalized linear model was used to identify factors associated with improvement in asthma control. Baseline characteristics were comparable between groups. At a median follow-up of 5 weeks (IQR 4-8), C-ACT scores were higher in the intervention than control group (median 25.0 vs 19.5, P < 0.001), with mean change exceeding the minimal clinically important difference. Caregiver knowledge and attitudes and children's MDI technique also improved more in the intervention group (P < 0.001 for all). In multivariable models, telemedicine education was independently associated with greater improvement in asthma control (β = 4.24, 95% CI: 2.64-5.85, P < 0.001). Telemedicine-based education improved asthma control and caregiver-related outcomes and may serve as an effective supportive strategy where access to pediatric asthma services is limited.

Objective: To examine biological, maternal, and socio-cognitive determinants of under-five mortality in Vietnam using nationally representative data. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed data from the Vietnam Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 2020–2021, including 4,475 children under five. Bayesian Model Averaging reduced redundancy among correlated predictors and addressed model uncertainty before multivariable logistic regression identified independent predictors. Results: Multiple birth was the strongest risk factor (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 8.37, 95% CI 4.35–15.87; P<0.001). Receiving prenatal care from a doctor was strongly protective and was associated with a 64% lower odds of death (aOR 0.36, 95% CI 0.25–0.52; P<0.001). Birth interval of at least 4 years, maternal age ≥35 years, and maternal digital connectivity were also associated with better survival. Conclusion: These findings highlight biological vulnerability and modifiable social determinants of child survival in Vietnam, supporting targeted interventions for high-risk births and equitable access to quality maternal and newborn care.

Đặt vấn đề: Viêm phổi do tác nhân vi khuẩn không điển hình ngày càng tăng. Viêm phổi do Mycoplasma pneumoniae có xu hướng trẻ hoá, lâm sàng đa dạng, khó nhận biết đưa đến kéo dài thời gian điều trị. Mục tiêu nghiên cứu: 1. Xác định tỷ lệ nhiễm Mycoplasma pneumoniae trong viêm phổi ở trẻ từ 1-15 tuổi. 2. Mô tả đặc điểm lâm sàng, cận lâm sàng viêm phổi do nhiễm Mycoplasma pneumoniae ở trẻ từ 1-15 tuổi.
