The prediction of student academic performance has drawn considerable attention in education. However, although the learning outcomes are believed to improve learning and teaching, prognosticating the attainment of student outcomes remains underexplored. A decade of research work conducted between 2010 and November 2020 was surveyed to present a fundamental understanding of the intelligent techniques used for the prediction of student performance, where academic success is strictly measured using student learning outcomes. The electronic bibliographic databases searched include ACM, IEEE Xplore, Google Scholar, Science Direct, Scopus, Springer, and Web of Science. Eventually, we synthesized and analyzed a total of 62 relevant papers with a focus on three perspectives, (1) the forms in which the learning outcomes are predicted, (2) the predictive analytics models developed to forecast student learning, and (3) the dominant factors impacting student outcomes. The best practices for conducting systematic literature reviews, e.g., PICO and PRISMA, were applied to synthesize and report the main results. The attainment of learning outcomes was measured mainly as performance class standings (i.e., ranks) and achievement scores (i.e., grades). Regression and supervised machine learning models were frequently employed to classify student performance. Finally, student online learning activities, term assessment grades, and student academic emotions were the most evident predictors of learning outcomes. We conclude the survey by highlighting some major research challenges and suggesting a summary of significant recommendations to motivate future works in this field.

Understanding, modeling, and predicting student performance in higher education poses significant challenges concerning the design of accurate and robust diagnostic models. While numerous studies attempted to develop intelligent classifiers for anticipating student achievement, they overlooked the importance of identifying the key factors that lead to the achieved performance. Such identification is essential to empower program leaders to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of their academic programs, and thereby take the necessary corrective interventions to ameliorate student achievements. To this end, our paper contributes, firstly, a hybrid regression model that optimizes the prediction accuracy of student academic performance, measured as future grades in different courses, and, secondly, an optimized multi-label classifier that predicts the qualitative values for the influence of various factors associated with the obtained student performance. The prediction of student performance is produced by combining three dynamically weighted techniques, namely collaborative filtering, fuzzy set rules, and Lasso linear regression. However, the multi-label prediction of the influential factors is generated using an optimized self-organizing map. We empirically investigate and demonstrate the effectiveness of our entire approach on seven publicly available and varying datasets. The experimental results show considerable improvements compared to single baseline models (e.g. linear regression, matrix factorization), demonstrating the practicality of the proposed approach in pinpointing multiple factors impacting student performance. As future works, this research emphasizes the need to predict the student attainment of learning outcomes.

Connected vehicles and smart cars have become highly reliant on location-based services (i.e. LBS) to provide accurate, personalized and intelligent services. However, location-based services have endangered its users to considerable risks concerning the privacy and security of users’ personal data. Although existing research provides a myriad of methods to improve and protect user privacy in LBS applications, most of these methods are concerned with handling static queries and non-mobile objects only. Moreover, various issues and challenges still persist with regards to the need to trust third parties, overloading of the user, and low accuracy of the returned results. This paper contributes a Double Obfuscation Approach (referred to as DOA) that applies two phases of obfuscation consecutively whilst integrating two differing privacy protection approaches, namely Obfuscation and Trusted Third Party, and two techniques, namely fog caching technology and mix zone. In essence, the DOA obfuscates and hides the identity and location of its users using the fog nodes, which operate as a trusted third party (TTP), and without the need to reveal the identity of the users or trust the cooperating nodes. Moreover, this paper presents a DOA algorithm that improves the overall user privacy and system performance using the fog nodes, which split the responses of each query into five parts, thus reducing the processing time of the results by the user and enhancing the overall accuracy where the user directly selects the most suitable parts based on his current location. Overall, the hybrid DOA approach empowers the users of connected vehicle applications to protect their privacy through an algorithm that caters for the dynamic nature of user queries and mobility of objects. The results of our comparative simulations against well-known hybrid privacy protection methods demonstrate the superiority of the proposed Double Obfuscation Approach especially with respect to user privacy whilst maintaining a nominal overhead on the user, reduced response time and high accuracy of the obtained results.

Traffic congestion is still a challenge faced by most countries of the world. However, it can be solved most effectively by integrating modern technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), fog computing, cloud computing, data analytics, and so on, into a framework that exploits the strengths of these technologies to address specific problems faced in traffic management. Unfortunately, no such framework that addresses the reliability, flexibility, and efficiency issues of smart-traffic management exists. Therefore, this paper proposes a comprehensive framework to achieve a reliable, flexible, and efficient solution for the problem of traffic congestion. The proposed framework has four layers. The first layer, namely, the sensing layer, uses multiple data sources to ensure a reliable and accurate measurement of the traffic status of the streets, and forwards these data to the second layer. The second layer, namely, the fog layer, consumes these data to make efficient decisions and also forwards them to the third layer. The third layer, the cloud layer, permanently stores these data for analytics and knowledge discoveries. Finally, the fourth layer, the services layer, provides assistant services for traffic management. We also discuss the functional model of the framework and the technologies that can be used at each level of the model. We propose a smart-traffic light algorithm at level 1 for the efficient management of congestion at intersections, tweet-classification and image-processing algorithms at level 2 for reliable and accurate decision-making, and support services at level 4 of the functional model. We also evaluated the proposed smart-traffic light algorithm for its efficiency, and the tweet classification and image-processing algorithms for their accuracy.

The use of software and IoT services is increasing significantly among people with special needs, who constitute 15% of the world’s population. However, selecting appropriate services to create a composite assistive service based on the evolving needs and context of disabled user groups remains a challenging research endeavor. Our research applies a scenario-based design technique to contribute (1) an inclusive disability ontology for assistive service selection, (2) semi-synthetic generated disability service datasets, and (3) a machine learning (ML) framework to choose services adaptively to suit the dynamic requirements of people with special needs. The ML-based selection framework is applied in two complementary phases. In the first phase, all available atomic tasks are assessed to determine their appropriateness to the user goal and profiles, whereas in the subsequent phase, the list of service providers is narrowed by matching their quality-of-service factors against the context and characteristics of the disabled person. Our methodology is centered around a myriad of user characteristics, including their disability profile, preferences, environment, and available IT resources. To this end, we extended the widely used QWS V2.0 and WS-DREAM web services datasets with a fusion of selected accessibility features. To ascertain the validity of our approach, we compared its performance against common multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) models, namely AHP, SAW, PROMETHEE, and TOPSIS. The findings demonstrate superior service selection accuracy in contrast to the other methods while ensuring accessibility requirements are satisfied.

Towards tackling the phenomenon of textual information overload that is exponentially pumping with redundancy over the Internet, this paper investigates a solution depending on the Automatic Text Summarization (ATS) method. The idea of ATS is to assist, e.g., online readers, in getting a simplified version of texts for preserving their time/effort required to skim a given large body of text. However, ATS is deemed as one of the most complex NLP applications, particularly for the Arabic language that has not been intelligently developed like the other Indo-European languages. Thus, we present an extractive-based summarizer (ArDBertSum) for text written in Arabic, relying on the DistilBERT model. Besides, we propose a domain-specific sentence-clauses segmentater (SCSAR) to support our ArDBertSum in further shortening long/complex sentences. The results of our experiments illustrate that our ArDBertSum yields the best performance, compared with non-heuristic Arabic summarizers, in producing an acceptable quality of candidate summaries. These experiments have been conducted on EASC-dataset (along with our proposed dataset) to report on (1) a statistical evaluation utilizing ROUGE metrics and (2) a specific human-based evaluation. The human evaluation results revealed promising perceptions; however, further works are needed to ameliorate the coherence and punctuation of the automatic summaries.
