Several methods utilizing common spatial pattern (CSP) algorithm have been presented for improving the identification of imagery movement patterns for brain computer interface applications. The present study focuses on improving a CSP-based algorithm for detecting the motor imagery movement patterns. A discriminative filter bank of CSP method using a discriminative sensitive learning vector quantization (DFBCSP-DSLVQ) system is implemented. Four algorithms are then combined to form three methods for improving the efficiency of the DFBCSP-DSLVQ method, namely the kernel linear discriminant analysis (KLDA), the kernel principal component analysis (KPCA), the soft margin support vector machine (SSVM) classifier and the generalized radial bases functions (GRBF) kernel. The GRBF is used as a kernel for the KLDA, the KPCA feature selection algorithms and the SSVM classifier. In addition, three types of classifiers, namely K-nearest neighbor (K-NN), neural network (NN) and traditional support vector machine (SVM), are employed to evaluate the efficiency of the classifiers. Results show that the best algorithm is the combination of the DFBCSP-DSLVQ method using the SSVM classifier with GRBF kernel (SSVM-GRBF), in which the best average accuracy, attained are 92.70% and 83.21%, respectively. Results of the Repeated Measures ANOVA shows the statistically significant dominance of this method atp< 0.05. The presented algorithms are then compared with the base algorithm of this study i.e. the DFBCSP-DSLVQ with the SVM-RBF classifier. It is concluded that the algorithms, which are based on the SSVM-GRBF classifier and the KLDA with the SSVM-GRBF classifiers give sufficient accuracy and reliable results.

Introduction: Within the development of brain-computer interface (BCI) systems, it is crucial to consider the impact of brain network dynamics and neural signal transmission mechanisms on electroencephalogram-based motor imagery (MI-EEG) tasks. However, conventional deep learning (DL) methods cannot reflect the topological relationship among electrodes, thereby hindering the effective decoding of brain activity. Methods: Inspired by the concept of brain neuronal forward-forward (F-F) mechanism, a novel DL framework based on Graph Neural Network combined forward-forward mechanism (F-FGCN) is presented. F-FGCN framework aims to enhance EEG signal decoding performance by applying functional topological relationships and signal propagation mechanism. The fusion process involves converting the multi-channel EEG into a sequence of signals and constructing a network grounded on the Pearson correlation coeffcient, effectively representing the associations between channels. Our model initially pre-trains the Graph Convolutional Network (GCN), and fine-tunes the output layer to obtain the feature vector. Moreover, the F-F model is used for advanced feature extraction and classification. Results and discussion: Achievement of F-FGCN is assessed on the PhysioNet dataset for a four-class categorization, compared with various classical and state-of-the-art models. The learned features of the F-FGCN substantially amplify the performance of downstream classifiers, achieving the highest accuracy of 96.11% and 82.37% at the subject and group levels, respectively. Experimental results affirm the potency of FFGCN in enhancing EEG decoding performance, thus paving the way for BCI applications.

For modeling a dynamic system in practice, it often faces the difficulty in improving the accuracy of the constructed analytical model, since some components of the dynamic model are often ignored deliberately due to the difficulty of identification. It is also unwise to apply the neural network to approximate the entire dynamic system as a black box, when the comprehensive knowledge of most components of the dynamics of a large system are available. This paper proposes a method that utilizes the backpropagation (BP) neural network to identify the unknown components of the dynamic system based on the experimental front-end inputs–outputs data of the entire system. It can avoid the difficulty in getting the direct training data for the unknown components, and brings great benefits in the practical application, since to get the front-end inputs–outputs data of the entire dynamic system is easier and cost-effective. In order to train such neural network for the unknown components of dynamics, a modified Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm, which can utilize the front-end inputs–outputs data of the entire dynamic system, has been developed in the paper. Three examples from different application points of view are presented in the paper, and the results show that the proposed modified Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm is efficient to train the neural network for the unknown components of the system based on the data of entire system. The constructed dynamics model, in which the unknown components are substituted by the neural network, can satisfy the requisite accuracy successfully in the computation.

This paper studies a multi-hydraulic system (MHS) synchronization control algorithm. Firstly, a general nonlinear asymmetric MHS state space entirety model is established and subsequently the model form is simplified by nonlinear feedback linearization. Secondly, an entirety model-type solution is proposed, integrating a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) algorithm with a cross-coupling control (CCC) algorithm. Furthermore, a novel disturbance compensator based on the system's inverse model is introduced to effectively handle disturbances, encompassing unmodeled errors and noise. The proposed innovative controller, known as nonlinear model predictive control-cross-coupling control with deep neural network feedforward (NMPC-CCCDNNF), is designed to minimize synchronization errors and counteract the impact of disturbances. The stability of the control system is rigorously demonstrated. Finally, simulation results underscore the efficacy of the NMPCCCC-DNNF controller, showcasing a remarkable 60.8% reduction in synchronization root mean square error (RMSE) compared to other controllers, reaching up to 91.1% in various simulations. These results affirm the superior control performance achieved by the NMPC-CCC-DNNF controller.

This paper contributes to the state of the art of applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in energy systems with a focus on the phenomenon of social acceptance of energy projects. The aim of the paper is to present a novel AI-powered communication and engagement framework for energy projects. The method can assist project managers of energy projects to develop AI-powered virtual communication and engagement agents for engaging their citizens and their network of stakeholders who influence their energy projects. Unlike the standard consultation techniques and large-scale deliberative engagement approaches that require face-to-face engagement, the virtual engagement platform provides citizens with a forum to continually influence project outcomes at the comfort of their homes or anywhere via mobile devices. In the communication and engagement process, the project managers’ cognitive capability can be augmented with the probabilistic capability of the algorithm to gain insights into the stakeholders’ positive and negative feelings on the project, in order to devise interventions to co-develop an acceptable energy project. The proposed method was developed using the combined capability of fuzzy logic and a deep neural network incorporated with a Likert scaling strategy to reason with and engage people. In a mainstream deep neural network, one requires lots of data to build the system. The novelty of our system, however, in relation to the mainstream deep neural network approach, is that one can even use small data of a few hundreds to build the system. Further, its performance can be improved over time as it learns more about the future. We have tested the feasibility of the system using citizens’ affective responses to CO2 storage and the system demonstrated 90.476% performance.
