In this paper, we concern the uplink of a massive single-input multiple-output enabled ultra-reliable low-latency communication system, in which a single-antenna transmitter aims to timely and reliably send data to a receiver equipped with a large number of antennas over Rayleigh fading channels. For such a scenario, to eliminate the considerable overhead caused by channel estimation, we adopt a noncoherent maximum-likelihood (ML) receiver, which is known to be optimal in terms of average symbol-error rate for equiprobable discrete input signals. We propose a two-dimensional noncoherent constellation design framework to enhance the reliability of the considered system. Specifically, our design principle is to maximize the minimum Kullback-Leibler divergence between the conditional distributions induced by different transmitted signals under average power constraint for any given transmission rate. The resulting optimization problem is shown to be a challenging mixed discrete-continuous problem. We manage to solve the problem by deliberately designing optimal bit allocation and optimal constellation structure as a function of signal-to-noise ratios. We then unveil that the proposed constellation can facilitate efficient ML detection with low computational complexity. Finally, simulation results illustrate that the proposed scheme has a superior error performance than conventional training-based schemes and existing energy detection designs.

In this paper, we consider a single-input multiple-output (SIMO) system, in which a single-antenna transmitter communicates with a receiver having multiple antennas. It is assumed that the channel coefficients keep constant during two consecutive time slots, after which they become new independent values. For such a system, we focus on the concept of uniquely factorable constellations (UFCs) in the design of noncoherent coding schemes under two communication scenarios. The first scenario is the massive SIMO system, in which only the first and second order channel statistical information is available. The second is the traditional Rayleigh fading SIMO system. Firstly, parameterized massive UFC (MUFC) and unitary UFC (UUFC) are designed for each scenario. It is proved that these designs ensure the unique identification of the transmitted signals when there is no additive Gaussian white noise. Secondly, using the Riemannian distance (RD) metric for the RD-based detector and coding gain criterion for generalized likelihood ratio test receiver, the optimal MUFCs and UUFCs of various sizes are constructed, respectively. Finally, we exploit the structures of our proposed designs to reduce the decoding complexities compared to the exhaustive search methods. Comprehensive computer simulations show that our proposed schemes outperform the current designs in literature.

Emerging edge computing (EC) systems are currently exploiting attaching portable edge devices on drones for data processing close to the sources, to achieve high performance, fast response times and real-time insights. To this end, existing EC research has proposed several multiple drone-based edge deployments for various purposes, such as data caching, task offloading, real-time video analytics, and computer vision. However, none of them consider the ability of seamlessly integrating edge resources running across multiple drones in a single pool, to holistically manage and control these resources as well as to eliminate vendor lock-in situations. This paper presents an intelligent resource scheduling solution for a federated aerial EC system, called AirEdge, which jointly considers task dependencies, heterogeneous resource demand and drones’ flight time. We propose a multi-task execution time estimation and a dispatching policy, to select the closest drone deployment having congruent flight time and resource availability to execute ready tasks at any given time. For the utilization of the drones’ attached edge resources, we propose a variant bin-packing optimization approach through gang-scheduling of multi-dependent tasks that co-locates tasks tightly on nodes to fully utilize available resources. Experiments on real-world data-trace from Alibaba cluster trace with information on task dependencies (about 12,207,703 dependencies) and resource demands show the effectiveness, fast executions, and resource efficiency of our approach.

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) greatly facilitates industrial production and economic development. However, it has more vulnerabilities facing the security issues introduced by the openness of wireless communications. Hence, a lightweight combined physical layer encryption and authentication (PLEA) scheme is proposed in this paper to protect resource-constrained IIoT devices. In the proposed PLEA scheme, quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation is adopted and the quadrant feature is extracted along with the shared key to generate a dynamic encrypting sequence and a tag. Then, physical layer encryption (PLE) and tag-embedding are carried out by phase reverse and power assignment according to the encrypting sequence and the tag, correspondingly. At the receiver, the same quadrant feature is extracted from the received signals and then is used to regenerate the tag and the decrypting sequence in order to execute physical layer authentication (PLA) and decryption. The error rates of the signal detection and tag detection are given, then the probability of detection and false alarm probability of the proposed PLA scheme are also obtained. In addition, the unified average changing intensity is defined and derived to analyze the performance of the PLE. Finally, computer simulation results show that the proposed scheme could provide effective security protection for IIoT.
