Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a superior technology for the high-speed data rate of wire-line and wireless communication systems. The OFDM has many advantages over other techniques such as its high capacity and immunity against multipath fading channels. However, one of the main drawbacks of the OFDM system is the high-peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) that leads the system to produce in-band distortion and out-of-band radiation because of the non-linearity of the high-power amplifiers. Therefore, numerous techniques have been proposed to overcome the PAPR problem such as selective mapping, partial transmit sequence (PTS), clipping, and nonlinear companding. In this paper, the PTS technique was analytically reviewed as one of the important methods to reduce the high PAPR problem. The PAPR performance and the computational complexity level are discussed in terms of modifying the PTS technique in the frequency domain, time domain, and modulation stage (Inverse Fast Fourier Transform block). Moreover, the numerical statistic comparison of the current modified-PTS methods is introduced, and the criteria for selecting the suitable modified-PTS method in the OFDM system is also given. The simulation and the numerical calculations results show that the rows exchange-interleaving PTS (IL-Ex-PTS) scheme is the best method for reducing the PAPR value with low complexly in the frequency domain, and the cooperative PTS (CO-PTS) method is the best among the modulation stage methods, while the cyclic shift sequence PTS (CSS-PTS) method achieves the superior performance in PAPR reduction and computational complexity for the time domain methods.
The optimal generation scheduling (OGS) of hydropower units holds an important position in electric power systems, which is significantly investigated as a research issue. Hydropower has a slight social and ecological effect when compared with other types of sustainable power source. The target of long-, mid-, and short-term hydro scheduling (LMSTHS) problems is to optimize the power generation schedule of the accessible hydropower units, which generate maximum energy by utilizing the available potential during a specific period. Numerous traditional optimization procedures are first presented for making a solution to the LMSTHS problem. Lately, various optimization approaches, which have been assigned as a procedure based on experiences, have been executed to get the optimal solution of the generation scheduling of hydro systems. This article offers a complete survey of the implementation of various methods to get the OGS of hydro systems by examining the executed methods from various perspectives. Optimal solutions obtained by a collection of meta-heuristic optimization methods for various experience cases are established, and the presented methods are compared according to the case study, limitation of parameters, optimization techniques, and consideration of the main goal. Previous studies are mostly focused on hydro scheduling that is based on a reservoir of hydropower plants. Future study aspects are also considered, which are presented as the key issue surrounding the LMSTHS problem.
The filtered orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (F-OFDM) system has been recommended as a waveform candidate for fifth-generation (5G) communications. The suppression of out-of-band emission (OOBE) and asynchronous transmission are the distinctive features of the filtering-based waveform frameworks. Meanwhile, the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is still a challenge for the new waveform candidates. Partial transmit sequence (PTS) is an effective technique for mitigating the trend of high PAPR in multicarrier systems. In this study, the PTS technique is employed to reduce the high PAPR value of an F-OFDM system. Then, this system is compared with the OFDM system. In addition, the other related parameters such as frequency localization, bit error rate (BER), and computational complexity are evaluated and analyzed for both systems with and without PTS. The simulation results indicate that the F-OFDM based on PTS achieves higher levels of PAPR, BER, and OOBE performances compared with OFDM. Moreover, the BER performance of F-OFDM is uninfluenced by the use of the PTS technique.
Mobile ad hoc network (MANET) can be described as a group of wireless mobile nodes that form a temporary dynamic and independent infrastructure network or a central administration facility. High energy consumption is one of the main problems associated with the MANET technology. The wireless mobile nodes used in this process rely on batteries because the network does not have a steady power supply. Thus, the rapid battery drain reduces the lifespan of the network. In this paper, a new Bat Optimized Link State Routing (BOLSR) protocol is proposed to improve the energy usage of the Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol in the MANET. The symmetry between OLSR of MANET and Bat Algorithm (BA) is that both of them use the same mechanism for finding the path via sending and receiving specific signals. This symmetry resulted in the BOLSR protocol that determines the optimized path from a source node to a destination node according to the energy dynamics of the nodes. The BOLSR protocol is implemented in a MANET simulation by using MATLAB toolbox. Different scenarios are tested to compare the BOLSR protocol with the Cellular Automata African Buffalo Optimization (CAABO), Energy-Based OLSR (EBOLSR), and the standard OLSR. The performance metric consists of routing overhead ratios, energy consumption, and end-to-end delay which is applied to evaluate the performance of the routing protocols. The results of the tests reveal that the BOLSR protocol reduces the energy consumption and increases the lifespan of the network, compared with the CAABO, EBOLSR, and OLSR.
Partial transmit sequence (PTS) technique is considered as one of the efficient methods to reduce the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) problem in 4G waveform design such as the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Filtered-OFDM (F-OFDM) is a new candidate in the 5G waveform development with maintaining a high level of commonality with legacy OFDM systems, but the high PAPR value is still a considerable problem because F-OFDM supports the orthogonal transmission. Although the PTS technique improves the PAPR reduction performance significantly, the high computational complexity level for optimizing the phases of the transmitting signal restricts this technique in practical applications. Therefore, the low computational complexity level of the PTS technique leads to the adoption of this technique for PAPR reduction in the multicarrier systems such as OFDM and F-OFDM. In this paper, a new low complexity algorithm (Gray-PF-PTS) by combining the Gray code and the left feedback shift register operation based on a specific mapping rule has been proposed. The numerical results indicate that the Gray-PF-PTS algorithm extensively reduces the computational complexity level without degradation the PAPR reduction performance compared with the conventional PTS method. Furthermore, the OFDM and F-OFDM systems based on the Gray-PF-PTS algorithm have been compared regarding the PAPR, bit error rate (BER), and power spectrum density (PSD) performances.
