The immense increase in multimedia-on-demand traffic that refers to audio, video, and images, has drastically shifted the vision of the Internet of Things (IoT) from scalar to Multimedia Internet of Things (M-IoT). IoT devices are constrained in terms of energy, computing, size, and storage memory. Delay-sensitive and bandwidth-hungry multimedia applications over constrained IoT networks require revision of IoT architecture for M-IoT. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of M-IoT with an emphasis on architecture, protocols, and applications. This article starts by providing a horizontal overview of the IoT. Then, we discuss the issues considering the characteristics of multimedia and provide a summary of related M-IoT architectures. Various multimedia applications supported by IoT are surveyed, and numerous use cases related to road traffic management, security, industry, and health are illustrated to show how different M-IoT applications are revolutionizing human life. We explore the importance of Quality-of-Experience (QoE) and Quality-of-Service (QoS) for multimedia transmission over IoT. Moreover, we explore the limitations of IoT for multimedia computing and present the relationship between the M-IoT and emerging technologies including event processing, feature extraction, cloud computing, Fog/Edge computing and Software-Defined-Networks (SDNs). We also present the need for better routing and Physical-Medium Access Control (PHY-MAC) protocols for M-IoT. Finally, we present a detailed discussion on the open research issues and several potential research areas related to emerging multimedia communication in IoT.

The convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and drug discovery is accelerating the pace of therapeutic target identification, refining of drug candidates, and streamlining processes from laboratory research to clinical applications. Despite these promising advances, the inherent opacity of AI-driven models, especially deep-learning (DL) models, poses a significant “black-box" problem, limiting interpretability and acceptance within the pharmaceutical researchers. Explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) has emerged as a crucial solution for enhancing transparency, trust, and reliability by clarifying the decision-making mechanisms that underpin AI predictions. This review systematically investigates the principles and methodologies underpinning XAI, highlighting various XAI tools, models, and frameworks explicitly designed for drug-discovery tasks. XAI applications in healthcare are explored with an in-depth discussion on the potential role in accelerating the drug-discovery processes, such as molecular modeling, therapeutic target identification, Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, and Excretion (ADME) prediction, clinical trial design, personalized medicine, and molecular property prediction. Furthermore, this article critically examines how XAI approaches effectively address the black-box nature of AI models, bridging the gap between computational predictions and practical pharmaceutical applications. Finally, we discuss the challenges in deploying XAI methodologies, focusing on critical research directions to improve transparency and interpretability in AI-driven drug discovery. This review emphasizes the importance of researchers staying current on evolving XAI technologies to realize their transformative potential in fully improving the efficiency, reliability, and clinical impact of drug-discovery pipelines.

The next generation of the Internet of Things (IoT) networks is expected to handle a massive scale of sensor deployment with radically heterogeneous traffic applications, which leads to a congested network, calling for new mechanisms to improve network efficiency. Existing protocols are based on simple heuristics mechanisms, whereas the probability of collision is still one of the significant challenges of future IoT networks. The medium access control layer of IEEE 802.15.4 uses a distributed coordination function to determine the efficiency of accessing wireless channels in IoT networks. Similarly, the network layer uses a ranking mechanism to route the packets. The objective of this study was to intelligently utilize the cooperation of multiple communication layers in an IoT network. Recently, Q-learning (QL), a machine learning algorithm, has emerged to solve learning problems in energy and computational-constrained sensor devices. Therefore, we present a QL-based intelligent collision probability inference algorithm to optimize the performance of sensor nodes by utilizing channel collision probability and network layer ranking states with the help of an accumulated reward function. The simulation results showed that the proposed scheme achieved a higher packet reception ratio, produces significantly lower control overheads, and consumed less energy compared to current state-of-the-art mechanisms.

The 5G and beyond-5G (B5G) is expected to be a key enabler for Internet-of-Everything (IoE). The narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is a low-power wide-area enabling technology introduced by the 3 rd Generation Partnership in 5G. The objective of the NB-IoT is to enhance the mobile coverage area by increasing the number of repetitions of control and data packets between user equipment (UE) and the base station/evolved NodeB (BS/eNB). While these repetitions improve data delivery for delay-sensitive applications, they degrade the efficiency of the already resource-constrained IoT system by increasing the system overhead and energy consumption. Moreover, NB-IoT devices in the edge region of the cellular coverage area require more repetitions, which augment energy consumption. In this study, we investigate device-to-device (D2D) communication for NB-IoT delay-sensitive applications, such as healthcare-IoT services, to use two-hop communication instead of using a direct uplink. An optimization problem is formulated to achieve an optimal end-to-end delivery ratio (EDR). In addition, this study incorporates Q-Learning-based reinforcement learning (RL) for the selection of an optimal cellular relay, which assists NB-IoT UE in uploading sensitive data to BS/eNB. The proposed RL-intelligent-D2D (RL-ID2D) communication methodology selects the optimum relay with a maximum EDR, which ultimately augments energy efficiency.
