As one of the earliest remote sensing indices, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) has been employed extensively for vegetation research. However, despite an abundance of NDVI review articles, these studies are predominantly limited to either one subject area or one area, with systematic NDVI reviews being relatively rare. Bibliometrics is a useful method of analyzing scientific literature that has been widely used in many disciplines; however, it has not yet been applied to comprehensively analyze NDVI research. Therefore, we used bibliometrics and scientific mapping methods to analyze citation data retrieved from the Web of Science during 1985–2021 with NDVI as the topic. According to the analysis results, the amount of NDVI research increased exponentially during the study period, and the related research fields became increasingly varied. Moreover, a greater number of satellite and aerial remote sensing platforms resulted in more diverse NDVI data sources. In future, machine learning methods and cloud computing platforms led by Google Earth Engine will substantially improve the accuracy and production efficiency of NDVI data products for more effective global research.

Net primary productivity (NPP) is a core ecological indicator within terrestrial ecosystems, representing the potential of vegetation growth to offset anthropogenic carbon emissions. Thus, assessing NPP in a given region is crucial for promoting regional ecological restoration and sustainable development. This study utilized the CASA model and GEE to calculate the annual average NPP in Shandong Province (2001–2020). Through trend analysis, Moran’s Index, and PLS−SEM, the spatiotemporal evolution and driving factors of NPP were explored. The results show that: (1) From 2001 to 2020, NPP in Shandong showed an overall increasing trend, rising from 254.96 to 322.49 g C·m⁻2/year. This shift was accompanied by a gradual eastward movement of the NPP centroid, indicating significant spatial changes in vegetation productivity. (2) Regionally, 47.9% of Shandong experienced significant NPP improvement, 27.6% saw slight improvement, and 20.1% exhibited slight degradation, highlighting notable spatial heterogeneity. (3) Driver analysis showed that climatic factors positively influenced NPP across all four periods (2005, 2010, 2015, 2020), with the strongest impact in 2015 (coefficient = 0.643). Topographic factors such as elevation and slope also had positive effects, peaking at 0.304 in 2015. In contrast, human activities, especially GDP and nighttime light intensity, negatively impacted NPP, with the strongest negative effect in 2010 (coefficient = −0.567). These findings provide valuable scientific evidence for ecosystem management in Shandong Province and offer key insights for ecological restoration and sustainable development strategies at the national level.

Soil moisture is a key factor in ecosystems that profoundly affects carbon, nitrogen, and water cycles on land surfaces, vegetation growth, and climate change. Consequently, numerous scholars have researched and authored scientific literature on soil moisture and related topics. Using the Web of Science database, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of 60,581 papers published in the field of soil moisture between 2000 and 2022. The findings revealed the following trends. (1) The number of publications on soil moisture has consistently increased in the 21st century at an increasing rate. For instance, although the annual increase was only 94 publications in 2005, it surged to 321 publications in 2020. (2) The United States (US), China, and developed European countries emerged as primary research institutions and authors. The US occupies a leading position in soil moisture research, boasting the highest number of publications and total citations in the field, whereas China ranks second in both publications and total citations. (3) Regarding international collaboration, the US has established close partnerships with numerous international research institutions. However, China’s international cooperation in this field requires improvement. (4) The Journal of Hydrology holds the top position in terms of both the total number of published articles and citations. Research on water resources ranked first in terms of its H-index. (5) Keyword analysis highlighted several current research hotspots, including the coupled covariance effect of soil moisture and land surface environmental factors in the context of climate change, soil moisture utilization rate, crop yield, influence mechanism of soil moisture on soil ecosystem structure, and development of high-precision soil moisture data products. In conclusion, this study provides a systematic review of the research hotspots and trends in soil moisture studies in the 21st century. The objective is to offer a comprehensive reference to aid in understanding the evolutionary patterns of soil moisture research in multiple dimensions.

[Background] Brasenia schreberi is a perennial floating leaf aquatic plant with high ecological protection value and potential for economic development, and thus, its endangered mechanisms are of great concern. The rapid endangerment of this species in modern times may be primarily attributed to the deterioration of water and soil environmental conditions, as its growth relies on high-quality water and soil. [Objective] Exploring the responses of B. schreberi to water and soil conditions from the perspective of functional traits is of great significance for understanding its endangered mechanisms and implementing effective conservation strategies. [Methods] This study was conducted in the Tengchong Beihai Wetland, which has the largest natural habitat of B. schreberi in China. By measuring the key functional traits of B. schreberi and detecting the water and soil parameters at the collecting sites, the responses of these functional traits to the water and soil conditions have been investigated. [Results] (1) The growth status of B. schreberi affects the expression of its functional traits. Compared with sporadic distribution, B. schreberi in continuous patches have significantly higher stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2 concentration, transpiration rate, and vein density, while these plants have significantly smaller leaf area and perimeter. (2) Good water quality directly promotes photosynthetic, morphological, and structural traits. However, high soil carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus contents can inhibit the photosynthetic rate. The net photosynthetic rate is significantly positively correlated with dissolved oxygen content, pH value, ammonia nitrogen, and nitrate nitrogen contents in the water, as well as the magnesium, zinc, and silicon contents in the soil. In contrast, the net photosynthetic rate is significantly negatively correlated with the total phosphorus content in water and the total carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus content in the soil. (3) Leaf area and perimeter show positive correlations with various water parameters, including the depth, temperature, pH value, dissolved oxygen content, ammonium nitrogen, and nitrate nitrogen content, yet they are negatively correlated with total phosphorus content, chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, and permanganate index of water. [Conclusions] This study supports the idea that B. schreberi thrives in oligotrophic water environments, while the notion that fertile soil is required for its growth still needs to be investigated more thoroughly.

Wetlands, frequently termed the “kidneys of the Earth,” represent one of the most vital global ecosystems. Despite their limited spatial extent, plateau wetlands function as unique ecological units that play a pivotal role in the global carbon cycle, water resource regulation, and biodiversity conservation, while exhibiting acute sensitivity to climate change. Advances in remote sensing technology—characterized by macro-scale cover-age, temporal efficiency, and non-invasive operations—have established it as a corner-stone for the dynamic monitoring and analysis of these environments. This study presents a bibliometric synthesis of 2138 publications (1982–2024) retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. We systematically evaluated publication trajectories, international collaborative networks, disciplinary shifts, core journals, and the spatiotemporal evolution of research hotspots. Our findings reveal an exponential growth in scholarly output alongside a marked diversification of research fields. Geographically, research is predominantly clustered around the Tibetan Plateau, flanked by the Alps and the Himalayas, with sparse representation in other regions. Future endeavors should prioritize underrepresented low-latitude and remote regions through strengthened international synergy and the integration of emerging technologies, such as UAVs and hyperspectral sensors.
