In this study, the fundamental and mineralogical properties of the binary system incorporating the industrial display byproducts, liquid crystal display (LCD) and organic light emitting diodes (OLED), as a cementitious material. A substitution level of the fine glass powders, and water to binder ratio were kept at 30% and 0.4 for all mixes, respectively. Strength development for the blended concretes was monitored until 91 days of curing, during which a modification of pore distribution was examined by mercury intrusion porosimetry. Simultaneously, the pozzolanic activity was evaluated by the content of calcium hydroxide (CH) in the cement pastes obtained from results of thermogravimetry analysis, and the phase composition of the specimens was quantitatively determined X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement method. As a result, the CH content in the glass-mixed specimen was decreased with time after certain age depending on glass types. Also, OLED was much effective to the pozzolanic activity, producing a higher content of C-S-H gel at 91 days, compared to LCD. This phenomenon may be attributed to a difference of Al2O3 and SiO2 content in the oxide composition, which would induce a shift of larger pore to micropore resulting in an increase in the strength for OLED concrete.

In this study, the ability to absorb CO2 in concrete, in terms of carbonation reaction, was evaluated by utilizing organic light emitting diode (OLED) waste glass as a cementitious binder. The substitution level was set 10%, 20%, and 30% by weight of the binder, and water to binder ratio was kept at 0.4 for all mixes. Prior to estimate the concentration of CO2 uptake, an influence of OLED replacement on pozzolanic reactivity and thus strength development of concrete was investigated. CO2 absorption was calculated by molar concentration of carbonatable phases and carbonation depth derived from quantitative X-ray analysis and accelerating carbonation test, respectively. As a result, the blended concrete exhibits a higher strength with an increase of OLED replacement ratio due to the pozzolanic reaction, compared to the control specimen. Also, the content of CO2 uptake for the mixtures was increased with the substitution level of OLED, of which the OLED-mixed concrete was 1.81-2.76 times higher than the ordinary Portland cement (OPC) 100% concrete. This behavior may be attributed to an increased rate of carbonation progress. Therefore, it is concluded that the capacity of CO2 absorption is improved by the use of OLED glass powder as a cementitious material in a concrete mixture.

Concrete structures under cyclic exposure to chlorides entail a higher risk of embedded steel corrosion along with accelerated ionic ingress from the environment. This study proposes a coupled transport model considering moisture and chloride distribution in concrete to investigate the influence of a cyclic exposure condition on chloride penetration. In this model, pore size distribution to quantify the effective pore space for moisture and chloride mobilizations was determined to establish the governing equation for chloride transport through non-saturated concrete. From the simulation results, the rate of chloride penetration increases with decreasing ambient humidity levels due to the enhanced chloride convection. Finally, the coupled transport model was verified by comparing in-situ data, showing reasonable correlations with 0.83 and 0.93 of determinant coefficients for 22 and 44 years of exposure, respectively, while those obtained from LIFE 365 were much lower.
