Airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology has become the mainstream data source in geosciences and environmental sciences. Point cloud filtering is a prerequisite for almost all LiDAR-based applications. However, it is challenging to select a suitable filtering algorithm for handling high-density point clouds over complex landscapes. Therefore, to determine an appropriate filter on a specific environment, this paper comparatively assessed the performance of five representative filtering algorithms on six study sites with different terrain characteristics, where three plots are located in urban areas and three in forest areas. The representative filtering methods include simple morphological filter (SMRF), multiresolution hierarchical filter (MHF), slope-based filter (SBF), progressive TIN densification (PTD) and segmentation-based filter (SegBF). Results demonstrate that SMRF performs the best in urban areas, and compared to MHF, SBF, PTD and SegBF, the total error of SMRF is reduced by 1.38%, 48.21%, 48.25% and 31.03%, respectively. MHF outperforms the others in forest areas, and compared to SMRF, SBF, PTD and SegBF, the total error of MHF is reduced by 1.98%, 35.87%, 45.11% and 9.42%, respectively. Moreover, both SMRF and MHF keep a good balance between type I and II errors, which makes the produced DEMs much similar to the references. Overall, SMRF and MHF are recommended for urban and forest areas, respectively, and MHF averagely performs slightly better than SMRF on all areas with respect to kappa coefficient.

We present quad-constellation (namely, GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou and Galileo) time group delay (TGD) and differential code bias (DCB) correction models to fully exploit the code observations of all the four global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) for navigation and positioning. The relationship between TGDs and DCBs for multi-GNSS is clearly figured out, and the equivalence of TGD and DCB correction models combining theory with practice is demonstrated. Meanwhile, the TGD/DCB correction models have been extended to various standard point positioning (SPP) and precise point positioning (PPP) scenarios in a multi-GNSS and multi-frequency context. To evaluate the effectiveness and practicability of broadcast TGDs in the navigation message and DCBs provided by the Multi-GNSS Experiment (MGEX), both single-frequency GNSS ionosphere-corrected SPP and dual-frequency GNSS ionosphere-free SPP/PPP tests are carried out with quad-constellation signals. Furthermore, the author investigates the influence of differential code biases on GNSS positioning estimates. The experiments show that multi-constellation combination SPP performs better after DCB/TGD correction, for example, for GPS-only b1-based SPP, the positioning accuracies can be improved by 25.0%, 30.6% and 26.7%, respectively, in the N, E, and U components, after the differential code biases correction, while GPS/GLONASS/BDS b1-based SPP can be improved by 16.1%, 26.1% and 9.9%. For GPS/BDS/Galileo the 3rd frequency based SPP, the positioning accuracies are improved by 2.0%, 2.0% and 0.4%, respectively, in the N, E, and U components, after Galileo satellites DCB correction. The accuracy of Galileo-only b1-based SPP are improved about 48.6%, 34.7% and 40.6% with DCB correction, respectively, in the N, E, and U components. The estimates of multi-constellation PPP are subject to different degrees of influence. For multi-constellation combination SPP, the accuracy of single-frequency is slightly better than that of dual-frequency combinations. Dual-frequency combinations are more sensitive to the differential code biases, especially for the 2nd and 3rd frequency combination, such as for GPS/BDS SPP, accuracy improvements of 60.9%, 26.5% and 58.8% in the three coordinate components is achieved after DCB parameters correction. For multi-constellation PPP, the convergence time can be reduced significantly with differential code biases correction. And the accuracy of positioning is slightly better with TGD/DCB correction.

The occlusion of buildings in urban environments leads to the intermittent reception of satellite signals, which limits the utilization of observations. This subsequently results in a decline of the positioning and attitude accuracy of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)/Inertial Navigation System (INS) integrated system (GNSS/INS). This study implements a smooth post-processing strategy based on a tightly coupled differential GNSS/INS. Specifically, this strategy used the INS-estimated position to reinitialize integer ambiguity. The GNSS raw observations were input into the Kalman filter to update the measurement. The Rauch–Tung–Striebel smoothing (RTSS) algorithm was used to process the observations of the entire period. This study analyzed the performance of loosely coupled and tightly coupled systems in an urban environment and the improvement of the RTSS algorithm on the navigation solution from the perspective of fully mining the observations. The experimental results of the simulation data and real data show that, compared with the traditional tightly coupled processing strategy which does not use INS-aided integer ambiguity resolution and RTSS algorithm, the strategy in this study sufficiently utilized INS observations and GNSS observations to effectively improve the accuracy of positioning and attitude and ensure the continuity of navigation results in an obstructed environment.

Solutions equipped with two or more light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems have been applied in several fields (navigation, mapping, target detection, and others) to obtain increasingly detailed 3D environmental information. Accurate calibration of multiple LiDAR systems is necessary for integrating and using their data. This study improves a convenient and reliable method for calibrating the relative poses between 3D LiDARs. The planar surfaces of a scene are measured from different poses; then, the planes are extracted and constraints are constructed to solve extrinsic parameters. The factors influencing calibration uncertainty are also investigated. It is found that the uncertainty is closely related to the geometric structure of the plane observations, and the rotation dilution of precision and translation dilution of precision are defined to denote this effect. The influence of different types of spatial plane geometries on calibration errors is discussed, and optimal observation conditions are derived. Experimental results for simulation and real data show that the proposed method can achieve an accurate extrinsic calibration of LiDARs, and the point cloud registration errors after calibration are less than 2 cm. The analysis of the calibration uncertainty provides a valuable reference and guide for experimental design and error evaluation.
